Ever since he got that damn thing he drug it with him ev’ry where, n’ I do mean ev’ry where. He took it with him ev’ry place we went n’ we got in plenty’a fights over it. He’s clocked me a few times ‘cuz I was pickin’ on it. 

It’s a Teddy bear. It doesn’t have feelings. I was the one with feelin’s n’ he picked that fuckin’ thing over me. I don’t feel bad ‘bout throwin’ it in the river. I never will. You can’t make me feel remorse fer this. Fuck that damn bear.

He wakes from his nap on the couch but sees nothing. It’s dark. Is it already night? Did he sleep that long? The house is dead black.

His lips part to question the time but not a word falls from them. He swears he spoke. He tried to anyway. Can he not hear? Can he not hear and thus he could not hear them?  Instinct tells him to check another way and thus only setting up from his position he raises his hands and claps them together quickly and sure enough the sound of metal colliding against flesh rings true in his ears just as it’s supposed to.  

Again he slams his hands together and the sound repeats it’s self. As if to check a different way, he snaps his fingers instead. Once, twice, three times.

He can hear just fine. He closes his eyes and opens them again. It’s still dark. His lips part  - still no words. His voice has been stripped from him and he’d wager a guess that his sight was too. 

Fuck.  

He relies on his eyes to use his automail.  Proprioception helps him make up for the lack of feeling he deals with on both sides. Now he just has hope someone else is in the room. 

Once. Twice. Three times he claps his hands together.  Flesh fingers striking against a metal palm as loudly as he can manage. If there is someone else in the room, they most certainly heard him. They had to. 

His left hand goes flat, right hand on top of it in a fist with his thumb extended upwards. Together he raises them from his belly to his chest. He repeats the motion once and then again. 

crucial muse development questions.

1. what would completely break your character?

The loss of his brother or Winry, easily. Edward cares deeply about the people he loves and he’ll do anything for them - he’ll ever cross lines for them. Edward loves with everything he is. He’s excessively protective of Winry to the point that he won’t show his more negative emotions in front of her - leaving her to “cry for him” because “you two won’t cry so someone should do it for you, don’t you think?”  

When she finds herself on the battlefield while he’s fighting Scar (round 2) he threatens Scar’s life  if the man were to lay a hand on her. 

and I can only imagine what would have happened if Winry did actually die.  Considering Edward proceeded to use his own body as a shield in order to not only stop Winry from killing but to protect her as well. Edward knew full well the destructive power Scar possesses and the gruesome death he would have earned himself but he still used his own body as a shield regardless.

She’s is family and he was willing to die for her then and there. He was willing to die on top of her if it meant saving her life. The idea of her dying instead might drive him over the edge. 

I say this because this is the face he makes when Bradley threatens her: 

Pure unadulterated rage. 

Further in the series, the loss of Alphonse puts Edward in a near panic like state as he wracks his brain trying to think of a way to bring him back after the conclusion of the final fight. He’s pushing himself so hard that he’s starting to tune out the world around him until his father offers him the use of his life in exchange for getting back Alphonse and Edward does this:

He not only calls Hohneheim Dad but he starts crying. He’s so frustrated and worried and stressed out - generally pushed over his limits that he starts crying. The loss of his brother is a huge blow for him and he hardly knows how to cope. He ends up coming at Father in a near blind rage with an endless onslaught of attacks - not caring if he kills him or not. Alphonse is gone and Edward hits rage. 

At the end of the day it’s not that Edward’s depression would eat him alive - it’s that he’d drown in his rage and he might not be able to bring himself out of it.  

4. what seemingly insignificant memories stuck with your character?

Stars. Edward used to get lost in them when he was just a kid, laying out in the yard with his brother looking up at the sky taking them all in. He appreciated them more after his month long camping trip from hell thanks to Izumi, but he will always remember just laying outside with his brother taking in the sparkle of the night .

5. does your character work so they can support their hobbies or use their hobbies as a way of filling up the time they aren’t working?

🙉what are two things that make my muse uncomfortable in conversation (Part 2) 

Edward really hates talking about his father and his mother. He can do it and he will but both conversations leave him with a different after taste of depression. Both conversations leave him feeling empty and broken, bitter and disgusting. Both conversations leave him feeling alone. Feeling alone makes him uncomfortable because with feeling alone he feels unwanted and his depression runs rampant with that emotion. He doesn’t know how to control it. 

He also gets really uncomfortable when he has to tell the lies surrounding Alphonse’s body / armor or his automail. Despite the fact that he seeped his sob story in a helping of truth, it still makes him uncomfortable because he is terrified of the day when someone finds out that he’s lying and it backlashes on them  but not just them - it’ll backlash on Mustang too and everyone else who knows the truth for covering for them and then they’ll all go down on this sinking ship together. He doesn’t want anyone else to have to suffer for his mistakes.

For things that go bump in the night, Ed didn’t really have that problem. The lived out in the countryside and with his love of science starting at five he from an early age decided monsters weren’t real.  However as he got older, the masked man from Yock Island came to ruin his nightmares and he found himself on edge constantly after they went through that training, despite knowing the masked man’s identity when Izumi came to get them. Living in a run for your life environment for nearly a month cranked his intuition / paranoia up past 10 and he finds himself tuning into the sounds in the darkness even now.  

That fear was quickly amplified by the darkness that lives within the portal of truth and those black tendrils of darkness and truth it’s self haunt him even to this day. He will wake screaming in a full panic from nightmares of the portal, finding himself twisted in his blankets after trying to shake them off of himself in his sleep. When he wakes like this he’s not in his right mind and he’s usually screaming for his brother. Thankfully Al is normally the one who’s with him so he can be brought to calm quickly but if he were to have a nightmare and Al is not there, it would be quite the task to calm him down. 

Added to his list as life went on, because he’s a teenager so still technically a child, was Scar. While his nightmares are most frequently dreams of being twisted up in his black hands with no way to get himself free,  Scar will appear in his nightmares from time to time while the only option left to him is to run. So he spends his nights running for his life in his dreams, and those dreams either end with his automail shattering on him again and the mad panic that ran through him when it happened in reality, or it somehow mixes with the portal of truth issue and he finds himself trapped and unable to free himself before a murderous Ishvalan delivers him a gruesome fate.
