Originally the meaning comes from the traditional code of conduct associated with the mid evil institution of knighthood. Through time the word as taken on the ideals such as the knightly virtues of honor, courtly love, courtesy, these things are all values that good dudes should possess.
I don't want to say my parents were old fashioned but I think the way they raised me resulted in me having some different values. My dad showed me the value of chivalry and the correct way to treat women. In today standards this is a dying bread, why does it seem impossible for guys to do what I would consider to be a normal thing?
Is dating really done? It seems now it's about getting a number, or sending someone a DM on twitter, going to a bar, grabbing drinks, then bed sheets. Why is it so difficult to ask a girl to dinner, or hang out with her and friends to try to get to know someone? I get it, I know this stuff costs money, I know everyone is trying to save or be cautious but you have to eat anyways, why not be in the company of someone you could possibly have a relationship with?
I go out on the weekends and see it the values and morals I grew up with less and less. What happened to paying for drinks and dinner? What happened to opening and holding the door? What happened to giving a lady your jacket when she's cold? When did we loose these things, when did it become okay?
We live in a reality now that is a 140 characters, and likes in instagram. Do you really expect when you go out on the weekend to a noisy club / bar that you're going to have a earth shattering conversation with someone? You end up talking about what you're drinking and where you live and all the other small talk options. We've stopped caring about getting to know people on the next level.
Now guys don't think I'm going hard on you, this isn't only our faults. Ladies a big chunk of this comes down on you as well. When did the minimum become a passing grade? If I like a girl a lot I want to get her flowers, I want to spend time with her, I want to get to know her. If that makes me a clinger then I quit.
Maybe one day the standard will change but I think it's going to take work on both sides. Get to know someone, even if you don't end up dating or whatever it's a great way to figure out what you like and dislike in a person / Boyfriend-Girlfriend.
