Friendly reminder that in Battle Spirits you'll get a happy ending only if you are Clackey... 🥺💖 I was rewatching an AMV and I was thinking about Dan and Mai. In the first season the two of them weren't this friends. Dan was already the Clash King but he was extremely naive and impulsive. Mai was Viole Mai and she was the Oujo of the group (until Kajitsu "joined" them).
They were basically kids here. Gekiha is the brightest of the seasons, at least until Kajitsu's death (or better... Until the OK made his appearance). Then, two years later, and most importantly, after all the tragedies that the core bearers had to face after the OK's defeat (and Yuuki's mysterious death), Dan and Mai met again.
They were definitely more mature: while Mai quit her blog and searched for a reason to live in the future, Dan had lost his will to fight. When she took him in the future (accidentally dooming his fate) he finally came back to be the unstoppable duelist we know. Aaaand in Brave, their relationship is open, mature and lovely, to the point of having an open love declaration (Mai used both "Suki" and "Ai shiteiru") and an off screen kiss. Then tragedy time: during his final duel against Barone, Dan sacrificed his life to save the world and all the dimensions by fusing his vital spirit with the 12 X-Rares, leaving Mai and all their friends disrupt. Saga Brave happens after 10 years and during the 10 years timeskip, Mai, now a doctor in a war-zone, back in the present time, doesn't duel anymore and she also works with the intelligence to monitor the Mazoku's appearance. After Leos Gideon and his Cardinal Sign summon the X-Rares, Dan's fate is revealed: he indeed is dead, but instead of being in the afterworld, he became a sort of keeper of the X-Rares, which are deities. Since their powers are able to create even new worlds (sounds like the Prana in DSOD) he basically has to control them, becoming an interdimensional spirit himself. He's able to travel across time and space and he's able to create new Spirits, as he makes after his final, temporary (and sad) reunion with Mai:
Now Mai is 26 and even though she still loves Dan and she has accepted their fate (she felt guilty in the past), she moved on. Dan, who definitely loved her back but was aware that they could no longer be together (he cannot even reincarnate) thanked her claiming that while fighting, she's with him. The union of their symbols was kind of symbolic and it gave birth to a new powerful card which helped Dan to defeat Leos Gideon.
Now I wonder if in BS Galette, there will be some references or Dan at least, will make an appearance. I don't think so, but who knows!
