Yuru shounen protagonist angst tiime XD But it's okay, he's got a pug to squish (very intensely alkdjalj)
I really love when animators can just go, "hey, the place we live is really pretty, come see". Obviously fantasy landscapes can be neat, but when Japanese animators go ham on animating how pretty Japan is, is fun. There's a kind of sense of that in the manga, with the immortal daemons and these groups associated with territory they fight over. Clan relationships in Japan are complex but the series creates this reminder that places remain long after the people there pass away, and human conflict feels so small in comparison. This might just be partially because I was rewatching Dan Olsen's video essay on Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien, where Olsen goes on about how LOTR is as much about the land as it is the people in it. A similar Japanese story with natural landscape is probably Princess Mononoke. Ghibli tends to do a lot of environmentalist works, but that's probably the most environmental work they have? Like Spirited Away is somewhat similar, though it's as much focused on the Bathhouse as anything else. And then Howl's Moving Castle focuses a lot on the castle itself, though it does take time to appreciate the beauty of the world to emphasize the evils of warfare. The Deer King by Nahoko Uehashi also emphasizes this a bit (better than the anime adaptation, though I do love the movie and you should watch it and pretend it isn't trying really hard to be Princess Mononoke).
I love the way Bones animated Danji scooching closer to Yuru while Yuru is crying. It's so sweet. Danji, being a daemon and already part of the fake "Asa" scheme, trying his best to offer what comfort he can, while likely conflicted about that and having to sort of help keep Yuru in the village. And Poor Yuru, alone in the world. All of his anchors being torn away one by one. People are shocked Yuru is as strong as he is, but he's had to be, for so long. Someone else pointed this out about the OP, where Yuru is talking until Dera yawns, and then Yuru is frustrated and stops talking, and then Hana lectures Dera for it. Yuru is a survivor and does his best to get by. Getting support from people who allow him to be sort of a child and to make his own way in the world matters.
I always found the femme pug daemon's comment/scene, "Dogs aren't people" to be funny, and I'm glad it was kept for the anime. I wasn't expecting it to be dropped, but well...
Left thinking, I imagine, about the limitations of being trapped in stone and unable to help comfort Yuru. Even Danji did more than she could when Yuru needed help most. Left is very distant a lot, but she still cares for him. I'm also wondering if there's some significance to the fact Yuru hid by her statue, but not Right's. Considering she's Yuru's opposite and meant to deal with him. Maybe something about halves feeling whole with other halves or something, especially since Asa was actually gone, even if Yuru didn't know.
The femme pug daemon's little chuckle as they acknowledge Left's appreciation for the pug XD Both of them chuckle in the manga. Also interesting, in the manga, it's the masc pug daemon who says the line about daemons and humans not being able to survive on their own.
I get why the change, but I'm just saying, in the manga, the pug was facing the other direction when he rolled onto his back, so his lower half was visible. Entirely.
This was one of my favorite manga moments and it's animated so well. The seiyu for the pug daemons do such a good job.
It's so cute to see how much the pug, despite being a dog, clearly cares for people, particularly his daemons. Obviously he probably treats them as his owners, but well. Cute. Trying to imagine these daemons learning dog training and how that process went, especially with the awkwardness of their situation. Like I don't think they named the pug (although maybe they did? To get him vaccinated?), but he does seem well trained. In the little we see of him, anyway. He's fine in his kennel, anyway. Maybe he's just naturally well-tempered.
Yuru not having any feelings for Danji at all. None whatsoever.

So in the manga, the daemons are actually also watching Fullmetal Alchemist, albeit with largely different shots of it (e.g., Nina is not in the footage shown, though Ed is).
But the joke with Shou Tucker talking in the background while Dera winces is from the manga.
They also seem to be using Brotherhood/ for reference footage. This is a wider shot of what's in Episode 4 - An Alchemist's Anguish, which better mimics what's in the manga (and the dialogue is from the original English manga translation in Volume 2, Chapter 5: The Alchemist's Suffering). Maybe it's from the DVD/blu-ray? It would make sense why the Nina shot is also a match for the episode but she looks a bit shinier and Alexander's eyes aren't closed in that sequence in the anime (but in the manga, his eyes are closed). DVD/blu-rays often get redone footage. Or Bones made entirely new shots for it using the footage they had, which would be a bit odd but neat.
A part of me wonders about the copyright side of this because obviously both of these series are Arakawa's works, and Bones made the anime adaptations for both of these manga (including both FMA anime). But the FMA manga has had a complex publication history in English. Square Enix published/s both FMA and YNT in Japanese (and YNT in English). But Viz originally published FMA in English, and the digital rights later went to Yen Press. And at least the English sub for YNT's anime is using FMA's manga's English wording, not the anime's (not sure what the English dub will use since I don't have access to it). Both the English sub for the Japanese dub and the English dub of Brotherhood do not say what Tucker is saying. That's a manga thing. I'm not sure if it's fine because it's all Arakawa, or Viz and/or Yen Press had to get paid for this episode specifically. Additionally, did Arakawa/Square Enix have to ask Viz and/or Yen Press, specifically, if it was okay if she included the joke in her own work when the manga was being translated to English? Neither Viz nor Yen Press are credited in Volume 5's English release and I didn't spot them in the episode credits but I could have missed that. It is also entirely possible that the Tucker line is the most accurate translation of what he's saying in Japanese, and Square Enix went with that when translating, and thus had no reason to credit Viz or Yen Press. And since presumably Bones is licensing from Square Enix, there's no issue. Copyright messes. Maybe. Who knows?

Hikaru is a wonderful example of how you truly do not know anything about an author/artist based purely on the art they produce. There are a variety of reasons people make what they make in the way they make it. Insisting that, "oh they depicted this so they must believe that" is silly.
My friend, @freyadragonlord pointed out this shot and how it's probably foreshadowing what's going to happen with Akio. It's also in the manga, so it would imply Arakawa meant something specifically by having three of the four birds grouped up and the fourth so specifically far from the others.

Bones made Yozakura as truly creepy as they should be. I was truly spooked the first time we saw Yozakura on-page.
I may be an appreciator of Ivan, Asuma, and Yuru specifically, but we also appreciate Dera in this house.
It's moments like this I remember that Asuma's daemons were also Iori's daemons once upon a time. How scary was it to let one of his biggest mementos of her be in the hands of someone like Ivan (for the teleportation)? Obviously he's willing to risk it all to take down his uncle, but this had to be worrisome.

We're closer and closer to Ivan v Yuru. I am not ready for it. Ahh I'm so excited. Been waiting for so long, back when we prayed for it to get an anime adaptation. It's going to be fascinating given how many fucking weirdos there are in this fandom who can't separate fiction from reality and are probably going to have tantrums over it. Especially Ivan already you know... being a kind of way about Yuru.
That being said, if you want a less messy attractive Bones-animated swordsman, seriously watch Sword of the Stranger. Nanashi is wonderful.

Overall, it was a great episode XD This arc is so fun! Looking forward to Episode 16: Kagemori and Shingo! More Asuma :3 More fighting! And dramatic reveals!!
There are so many people and things down here that it's hard to find solitude. Back in the village, I could go into the mountains to be alone. I could think without interruptions. Between bandits, beasts, and treacherous terrain, there are constant threats to your life in the mountains, so my focus is always on survival. What should I be doing to stay alive? Focusing on that leads my disorganized thoughts to a plain and simple answer. So I liked being in the mountains. But Danji always tried to follow me. He'd say, "What if something happens to you while you're alone?" It was annoying.... Damn it. You reminded me of something I was trying not to think about.

This will be spoilery for the manga.
I know this is Bones, and Bones gave us Sword of the Stranger, which has Nanashi, and also Bones does the anime adaptations for Bungo Stray Dogs, which has Chuuya, and The Case Study of Vanitas, which has Noe and Vanitas and Ruthven, and a lot of the YNT character designs are just recycled Arakawa usuals... but I was not prepared for how hot they made Yuru lol Don't get me wrong, Alphonse is adorable, and Edward is gorgeous. But... they did something with Yuru's design here that's just... wow (Arakawa draws him well, as usual, but not as hot as he is in the anime lol). I already liked Yuru a lot in the manga (though he isn't my favorite character because Oshira-sama and Asuma exist; Yuru's right up there, though). Just... wow. His seiyu, Kenshô Ono, also has a really gorgeous voice. Which makes sense, as I always liked his performance as Akutagawa in BSD and as Kuroko in Kuroko's Basket.
I also want to pay respects to how well the 2D horse is drawn. Year of the horse, and YNT anime showing off how well it can be done! (Especially with the past season having 3D model horses most of the time in other series). There was also more budget in that pheasant than some entire anime got recently and that's kind of disappointing, but the pheasant itself looks beautiful. Bones just going the distance, as usual. I wish more studios got their budget.
I enjoy Danji's pining for his boyfriend but also just... Yuru so pretty.

Women have done every kind of work that exists, historically. I still love the touch that 1) the village is headed by a woman (even if Yamaha sucks), and 2) we see a woman (Kyouka) chopping wood, something that usually only men are shown doing in media.
The addition of Yuru's grave expression as he goes to visit "Asa", as a change from his happier expression in the village, is nice. (We don't see that much of him in the manga during this part of the scene). Although he doesn't fully disagree with "Asa" being imprisoned, he still doesn't like it.
I imagine Kiri is not thinking, "Gee it sure sucks for the villagers while I am literally trapped in this dark cell 24/7" rather than "I hate pretending to be Asa", but still. You're free and she's not, Yuru.
Ah yes, the obtaining of meat. The usual important pursuit of fantasy adventure protagonists.
YNT's manga started in December 2021. I imagine this is actually a reference to COVID. It could just be Dera trying to fit in as one of the locals. Not like it's unusual for illness to be happening, and what he gets here isn't necessarily going to help much with something like COVID. But I would imagine that is what it is. I remember wondering back when I first read this if that was was the case, and seeing it now, I feel like it really is, if it hasn't been confirmed somewhere already.
Arakawa draws him well, but she doesn't draw him as hot as the anime does (he's more cute than hot in the manga), like wow. I think it's also something with his outfit. His wristbands, his bangs, the scarf, his tights... He's really attractive and it's very distracting in a way I only ever had issues with (Not bad ones! Just distracting ones!) in SMH and VnC alkdjlaj (particularly the latter, since Noe is just so gorgeous, though Nanashi, my beloved...).
Yamaha watching Yuru in particularly (and Dera a little) like a hawk. Her eyes are so spooky.
Danji proposing marriage to Yuru. Yuru's hot, Danji, I get it. Also getting pissed off Yuru thinks Danji would focus on Asa rather than Yuru aldkjla It's a mix of things that Yuru is clueless about and that Danji is trying to do here, but it's funny to think Danji is you know, flirting with Yuru, and Yuru is deeply clueless and thinks, "He's just after Asa!" And Danji is annoyed at being so wrongly misunderstood.
The "dragons" are unmasked, and genderbent Ed Gabby arrives :D (To be fair, Arakawa says in the omake that Gabby having Ed's colors was not her design, but she kind of went with it when other folks suggested it). And Asa, who's also gorgeous. And pissed off at everything that's been done to her and her family. I feel so bad for her and Yuru. And their mother, who went through an entire pregnancy in a village like this while people like Yamaha tried to make her think she was hallucinating coming from the regular world. Glad she got out. And hoping she's safe.
I am so deeply distracted by The Plot this episode.

Poor Yuru. Having his angsty shounen protagonist moments. Always a struggle. It's a problem when you get the one shounen side-bang, dear. Joe Shimamura could tell you as much.
I took way too many screencaps of Yuru, I think I have a problem. I am not prepared for when Ivan and Asuma show up.
The back and forth between Yuru and Dera was fun XD It's a central relationship for the narrative, and the anime pulls it off very well. The seiyu do a great job! And the animation is gorgeous. When Dera was readjusting his pack, whenever he grabs Yuru... Ah. That good Bones animation (if you have not watched Sword of the Stranger, please do yourself a favor, go watch it, it has one of the best sword-fighting scenes in animation).
Left and Right attacking the helicopters was interesting. The interplay of 2D and 3D was... okay. I liked the movement of the daemons as glowing energy monsters who just want bite, anyway. Bones are known for their pretty fight scenes (BSD in particular has some great ones involving modern tech), so the weird overuse of 3D was a bit odd, but generally everything else looked very good and Bones typical, so I like to think this is not going to be the way going forward. I'm still a bit wary of it, but well... We'll see. It's particularly stark because you can see Arakawa drew some really beautiful versions of modern equipment like the helicopters. And then in the anime it's just... 3D models?

There's been a lot of debate for the English translations of the series (as is usual for translation and localization), which I'm not going to try to get into. But if you're new to this and you're confused why people are still mad about it, yeah people have been mad since at least the English title of the manga was announced.
Overall, it was a really great episode! The art is gorgeous, all the seiyu do a great job, and it just looks really good! My one main criticism is the weird flashy transitions they have. I don't have epilepsy, but it's uncomfortable to watch, and I can't imagine it's good for folks with actual issues with flashing. Even for flashy anime, that was not great. As for Danji's shadow... I get why people are annoyed about it, but I think it works for the narrative. It's small enough to nearly not there that it makes sense.
