They're a little unhinged but it's ok

So a clearer timeline for this au (bc I can't stop thinking about them):

Sokka started joining the Southern Water Tribe to trade with Kyoshi village when he was around 6 years old (originally because Kya had her arms very full with two hyperactive children so Hakoda decided to take Sokka on an "educational field trip" instead of just leaving his wife and mom to deal with the kids.)

He and Suki did NOT get along but Hakoda did notice that Sokka seemed to really enjoy learning about Kyoshi's very different culture so it became a thing-- twice a year, Sokka would join the traders up to Kyoshi

Katara started joining those trips when she turned 6, but after Kya's death, Hakoda decided that it wasn't safe to risk Katara's safety by bringing her to foreign lands, even if Kyoshi village likely weren't the ones to inform the Fire Nation that there was still a waterbender in the Southern Tribe

Suki and Sokka start getting along when he's 8 and she's 9-- Suki starts training to become a Kyoshi Warrior and Sokka ends up swallowing his pride and asking her to teach him some moves.

They get especially close after Kya's death-- Suki is the only one Sokka actually opens up to about his grief.

Sokka stops visiting Kyoshi village after his 14th birthday, when the Southern Water Tribe's warriors leave with all of the ships. He doesn't get to tell her why he never came back.

She 100% punches Sokka in the face when he comes back, aged 16, hauling the Avatar with him. Then they hug :)

that's a wild claim to make. Suki might not have had as much of a presence as the others but she was crucial to the plot.

without her, Sokka would still be a misogynistic asshole. without her, Appa wouldn't have found his way back to the gaang. without her, Sokka and Zuko would have failed the prison break. without her, Sokka and Toph would have been dead in the final battle.

i think the only complaint i have about Suki is that we don't get to learn much about her past. i think the other characters had their own personal battles and arc, while Suki was mostly just a supporting character. i do wish we could have seen more of her life outside of Sokka and the gaang, and that's a criticism i can get on board with.

but it's still incorrect to say that she only existed to look cool and make love with Sokka. she was 100% a crucial character to the plot and was part of the gaang. the story wouldn't be the same without Suki.

also, people don't like the ship because it's low stakes. people like it because it's got good development, they both understand each other and have changed each other for the better. people like it because it's not forced or unhealthy like the other ships in ATLA.

Yo, what's up spuds. Thought I'd sneak this little sketch in for the summertime and to shill my modern AU Zuki fic "Spells" which this sketch was directly inspired by.

I was actually 10000% tempted to draw Zuko with a full on 70s perm but chickened out at the last second and gave him some hybrid Jim Morrison/Adult Zuko long hair look. I think it came out right. Suki, of course, is perfect and needed no such second thoughts.
