The Great Hall at Chicago Union Station, Part I Union Station's main waiting room, known as the Great Hall, more than lives up to its name. Roman travertine walls, Corinthian columns and brass lamps are just some of the features that make this one of the country's greatest interior spaces. Two female allegorical figures - one holding an owl, representing Night and the other holding a rooster, representing Day - flank the entrance to one of the corridors. They were designed by Henry Hering. The centerpiece of the Great Hall, however, is no doubt the barrel-vaulted skylight spans 219 feet across the ceiling and is 115 feet above the room. During World War II, the skylight was blacked out in order to make the building less of an a target for attacks by enemies. #Chicago #WestLoop #NearWestSide #BeauxArts #Neoclassical #DanielBurnham #GrahamAndersonProbstWhite #SouthCanalStreet #archi_ologie #BrickStory #ChicagoHome #VisitChiTown #EnjoyIllinois #ThisPlaceMatters (at Chicago Union Station) https://www.instagram.com/p/B814sg2FOpa/?igshid=py652mtfncod
