A few days ago, I mentioned how I'm an avid listener of the PALAOA live feed, a hydrophone sitting on the Southern Ocean floor below an ice shelf in Antarctica. Most of the time the feed is just Minke whales endlessly conversing through bassy pulses, icebergs crashing and calving, and Weddell seals chirping and trilling away. But PALAOA has a collection of recordings from the hyrdrophone –a hall of fame of sorts– illustrating all of the things that can be heard on the ocean floor, one of which remains mysterious and unidentified.

The recording above starts out with the usual low level hiss of the ocean floor, peppered with the chirps of Weddell seals, but at 00:30 something deep bellows out from the depths of the ocean.

From the PALAOA website:

"Scientists cannot identify many sounds recorded by PALAOA. They cannot even say whether they come from an animal or are of non-living origin. This audio example has a mysterious deep sound. Scientists have determined that it was created when there was no ship around within a radius of 1,000 km."

If I had to guess, I would place it as a Blue Whale that happened to be really close to the hydrophone, but that's just me and there's still room for Cthulu.
