Had a conversation about dance & my friend learned a lot about himself from it. Then he mentioned he wanted to popular like another peer, who is not as talented or passionate about dance but achieves more "on paper". And I asked him why - "he gets a lot of likes in social media" I asked him how that helps his dancing. - "it doesn't but people support him" I asked him what his goals are & he told me. Then I told him something I found out hours later he applied to his class. "As a dance teacher, you have to continue to learn. Take other classes, read about the history & find the fundamentals. Take class to work on it then bring it into your classroom. Our peers skip steps for popularity but look at their ability, ask them about technique, ask them about development of style. If they don't know or can't execute it, they shouldn't be teaching. Everyone has something to learn from each other but there's more to dance than just movement. There's culture & passion. Understand then teach. If you don't understand, guide students to help you understand. "
