Another former CHL player has come forward with accusations of abuse
TW: the screenshots of an article I will link below tell stories of physical and psychological abuse. Please donât continue reading if youâre triggered by stuff like this.
David Pszenyczny was a rookie alongside Dan Carcillo with the Sarnia Sting in 2003. He just confirmed Carcilloâs accusations.
âWhatâs normal? Weâre hockey players and weâre not supposed to show emotionâ neatly sums up the entire problem with the absolute shit show we call hockey culture.
[screams into the void]
You can find the entire article here.Â
Hey! Did you see that there's a proposed class action lawsuit in the works against the CHL and their major-junior leagues for bullying, hazing, and child abuse? I was reading about it today and it made me think of that book about major-juniors hockey that you'd mentioned you were reading a little while ago.
I did see those articles, and I was absolutely appalled by the descriptions of the hazing that took place, as Iâm sure many others were. Itâs sickening to think of the lack of accountability in hockey culture that allows these types of environments to exist both within juniors and the NHL itself, and itâs even worse to consider that in the case of the former, adult coaches and trainers are aware but either refuse to intercede, or they are passive or active participants.
And the worst part is, because of the severe conformity culture within hockey, players who have targeted through hazing, or sexually assaulted through hazing, or even sexually assaulted outside of hazing, know that they canât speak up about it for fear of rocking the boat and risking their advancement in their hockey career. A coachâs endorsement can make or break a player, and if that player is seen as a troublemaker whoâs ânot a team playerâ, theyâre likely to find their hockey career stalled or even destroyed.
What this all boils down to in an environment where trying to stand up for yourself and your teammates gets you ostracized, but harming your teammates earns a slap on the back, not only from your older teammates, but from your coach as well. Being kind is seen as selfishness, and being cruel is what actually wins the approval of the people you need to impress. It almost sounds like some futuristic dystopian sci-fi novel.
Itâs understandable to me that Check Please tries to eliminate these more toxic elements from its hockey universe, but I think itâs worth considering that this would be the kind of environment that both Jack and Kent endured as teenagers.
(msunderestimated)
We are both on vacation so this week is a pre taped pod where Riot & Laura talk: ghosted by Gritty on valentines day, a Kane has a point, Leon Draisaitl needs a happy lamp, Carcillo v Nasty and player goal songs.
When you realize that a year after Carcillo, Rich âDickyâ Clune was a rookie on the Sarnia Stings and try really hard not to draw your own conclusions about Dickyâs well documented struggle with mental health and addiction.

PSA: Paul Bissonette is a complete asshole
Hereâs everything yâall need to know about a fight he just started with Dan Carcillo on Twitter.
You can say of Carcillo what you want, but at least he acknowledges that he was a racist, homophobic, sexist asshole and constantly tries to make amends and better himself. Heâs also a dude who holds other men accountable for their actions and for that alone I salute the guy.Â
But since Bissonette has just been named âthe most influential person in hockeyâ and so many people still think his antics are fucking hilarious, this will probably be an overall horrible experience for Carcillo, who right now has thousands of Bissonetteâs followers threatening him online.Â
God I hate hockey sometimes.
the difference between the way akim aliu and dan carcillo were recieved is really obviously racist. i shouldnât be surprised but god damn. a lot of comments about dan carcillo are bad, but the good and supportive ones really rose to the top. with aliu, almost every comment is dismissive, hostile, and mocking. theyâre both talking about the same things but only the white guy is getting any respect
Itâs Carcilloâs past that makes him such an unlikely but important voice as hockey deals with its dark underbelly.
I was on the fence about Dan Carcillo for a long time but damn I am impressed by the way he has been working on himself and the way he challenges toxic masculinity in the hockey world. Amazing article!
