“Hey…” It’d been a few days since the harrowing ordeal, the deer’s little guardians lingering close by him as he recovered. Husk and Speaker both had been pretty strict about the deer remaining on bedrest…but it was a rule both the Holy Mother and Husk decided could be broken. For one evening.
A special evening. The clock was about ten minutes to midnight on Christmas Eve, when the deer experienced a gentle jostle of the shoulder, and twin pairs of eyes (eye) gazing at him gently. “Al,” Husk called softly. “Hey, wake up.”
“It’s almost Christmas!” Niffty chirped, more than excited for what was about to happen at midnight.
The Speaker had been right , it was not an easy recovery. Bed rest was its own special Hell for Alastor, but he would not have possessed the strength to move around much even if they’d let him. After months of pushing his injured body past its limits of endurance to present a semi-normal facade, culminated with the horrific ordeal of removing the Angelic infection, Alastor was lucky his body hadn’t given up on him.
But it would be a long road back, and he had to contend with his own weakness along with his bothersome little caretakers. (He was so, so grateful for them. Not that he’d ever admit it).
Alastor stirred at the gentle nudge against his shoulder, eyes blinking blearily at the culprit. He raised the hand that rested on his chest to rub his eye, and Husk and Niffty’s faces swam into view. For a moment their words remained nonsensical, then his mind caught up with him. He’d gone so time blind with all that had happened, that he’d completely lost track of the date.
❝ What time is it? ❞ he asked, attempting to sit up. He winced slightly at the pulling sensation in his chest, though it wasn’t nearly so bad as it had been before the wound had started to mend. One hand went to cover it instinctively, the other bracing him as he sat upright.
