Thought Bubble was really really great! I enjoyed it thoroughly. Coming to Leeds and seeing my niece and her family too was great as well. These are somr photos of Dalston Comics Club's table where some of our comics were sold. Later, I will post more photos.
24 hour comic day began on Friday 30th September at 5pm to Saturday 1st October at 5pm at Dalston Library. I had two hours sleep on Friday in order to prepare. The 24 hour comic day was held downstairs in a room in the basement. There were a few people who were present. I sat down and got my materials out. A more people came and sat down. There were library staff present too. Everyone was given a sheet of 30 objects and we had to choose 24 objects to out into the 24 page comic. Some of the objects include period costumes, love and a toy. As soon as I choose the 24 objects for my comic. I began making characters. I drew only three characters which was a woman wearing a victorian dress with a recent hairstyle, a goat called Murray and a chameleon called Kyle. Since I didn't have any references with me of what a chameleon or a goat so I drew from memory. Just like last year, I split the pages of my sketchbook in half and worked on A5. As I began to draw lots of jokes and humour came out from my mind. I didn't really intend to make a humor comic, it turned out to be. When the library closed at 8pm, I went home and continued the comic. I had a cup of tea and lots of water to keep me up and for food I had a some pastries and fruit. As I kept drawing, I kept having fear that it would not get finished which motivated me to keep going. Plus just like last year, I listen to gospel messages. But this time from a podcast called Elevation church. It kept my ears occupied while listening to it while I drew and it was another motivated thing that kept me going. By 5am, I felt chills from my body and decided to drink more tea and water. I stopped from 7am for a break and got myself ready to go to my local library. I had penciled and inked twenty one pages. The library opened from 9am and I bought some more fruits and water. I saw some of the people took part outside having breakfast. They had spent the night at an arts centre that was near by to get the comic done. We returned went to a room that was located on the top floor of the library to continue the session. Two hours later we were moved back downstairs to the basement to continue. By 12pm, the comic was completed in ink. I proceeded using orange drawing ink to create tones and by 3pm, it was completed. The final thing that I did was create a front cover and back cover for the comic. I created two front cover since the first one wasn't what I expected. I was tired, exhausted and a slight migrane was hoovering but I was pleased. The comic will be published online on Smackjeeves and maybe another webcomic website. I will post up the links very soon.
“Have we arrived yet”... ... “I think so we’ve been here for more then a year”.
DALSTON COMIC (creators) CLUB: Is a monthly meet up for adults who make comics, or are interested in starting. All welcome, come along to share ideas, get feedback from your peers, and find like minded creative people to collaborate with.
The mission of the Dalston Comic (creators) Club, is to provide an environment that fosters creativity and build a community of enthusiastic people, through running session on a regular basis. Where every session can be someone’s first, where attendees / members learn from each other and develop their sequential narrative skills.
We share whatever is produced in session under the banner of the DC(c)C, and after most sessions we go to the pub and carry it on.
There’s been loads of cool stuff happening at Dalston Comic (creators) Club over the last year and a bit, but in the mix of just doing it, we haven’t been very good about shouting from the rooftops to let people know, that we exist.
So far we have explored some different ways to generate ideas, tell stories and enhancing the quality of our output: 1: Four panel challenge - Introduction / Situation / Reaction / Conclusion 2: Mise en scène - Object / Character / Environment / Era / Genre / Transition 3: Audio translation - Explore an excerpt from radio short story via sequentials 4: Character development - Beginning to build a shared universe 5: Micro publishing special (part one) with Library Press 6: Elevator pitch - Refining your idea down to a succinct mouthful 7: Quality of line - Getting the best out of your drawing - Scanning & Photoshop 8: Lettering 101 - Captions, Thought bubbles, Word balloons and sound effects 9: Plotting the page - Panels layout & framing 10: Full Colour - Drama, Mood & Emotion 11: Indie Publishing Special (part two) Small Press Day 12: Four panel session #2 13: From thought to story - Organising / translating an idea into coherent plan 14: Intro to Manga / creating a Yonkoma 15: Halloween / Horror - Character design
In addition to all of the above: We have also hosted two (two day special to coincide with) 24 Hour Comics Day, had a day out drawing for Hourly Comic Day, establishing a collective that meets once a month outside of DC(c)C, and printed our first anthology for Small Press Day.
