holy shit it just occurred to me what a tragic character Dalben really is. He has to grapple with the knowledge that the boy who he loves as a son be truly heroic and will choose a kingdom of sorrow and suffering over one of happiness, and that Dalben can’t stay with him. He has to leave the people that he loves, the land that Coll loved, the cottage. He has to leave because of what he is, because he can never renounce his magic the way Eilonwy does. He will never watch the Red Fallows grow green again over Coll’s grave. He has to his home, his family, and everything he has held dear to him, all in order to allow Prydain to grow as it must. And the worst part? He has always known that this was his fate. He knew the second he accidently drank the potion, the moment he opened the Book of Three, the instant he first met Coll, the day he found Taran. He knows he will lose them all, and he has chosen to love them anyway.
