Summary:

“I am”, Suga insists, trying to clear his throat and wipe his running nose as discreetly as possible. He doesn’t succeed in the least.

“Next to the cotton balls”, Suga answers reflexively, muttering a curse under his breath as Daichi buries his head in the cabinet, a grin spreading across his face. 

It seems that never knowing where the things in his own home are located comes in handy sometimes. He’s clearly conditioned Suga into shouting out directions for him whenever he asks for the kitchen scissors or the vinegar bottle or, in a particularly embarrassing instance, the glasses that had been perched on his face.

“Open up”, he orders as he approaches Suga’s bed, pressing the power button on the thermometer. Being roommates for so many months probably means that Daichi’s been trained into enabling Suga too, an equal exchange.

“Well”, Suga begins, sitting up against the headboard, “it all started when I was ten and- blegh ”

Case in point, Daichi had known that the second he gave him an opening, Suga would leap at the chance to be annoying for the sake of it, letting him stick the thermometer in his mouth without struggle.

Suga goes almost cross-eyed glaring up at him as he waits for the beep.

“You are a very bad man”, he informs Daichi, “a cruel, cruel, bad man”

“No fever”, Daichi confirms, tuning out the complaints with practiced ease, “it could still be the flu though. We’ll only know if you start throwing up or something”

He pauses. If he could help it, Suga wouldn’t be throwing up at all, but since it’s looking pretty much inevitable, he should probably minimize the damage to their shared living space. Suga probably wouldn’t be able to make a run for it in time. Just the littlest bit of movement seems to have sapped him of his strength, his eyelids drooping like he’s going to fall asleep where he’s sitting up.

“I can’t believe the kids betrayed me like this”, Suga says, clearing his throat again, “eight year olds are so cruel”

“I thought I was the cruel one?”

A sick Sugawara Koushi is not really funny, but he is a little bit entertaining. Daichi’s had years to get to know him, every shade. Everything from the way his hands shake when he’s nervous to the way he gets so pouty and clingy when he’s taken down by a bug.

In sickness and in health , he thinks to himself, and that’s not really funny either, this big, giant, idiotic, unrequited crush he’s harbouring on his best friend who he eats breakfast with every morning, but it’s hard not to feel a burst of affection when Suga is blinking up at him sleepily, clearly staying awake through willpower alone. Even though he’s a total wreck right now, even though Daichi is definitely going to catch whatever bug he’d brought back from the school, he still makes Daichi’s heart beat double time just by looking his way.

“You’re cruel, they’re cruel, the whole universe is cruel”, Suga declares, slipping under the covers again. The lights have been dimmed, but he should probably just switch them off if they’re hurting his head, “I hate kids”

“You don’t mean that. You love your kids”, he chides. It had been just another arrow through his heart, the way Suga loved his classroom and the way they adored him back tenfold. He’s heard Suga recount how some of the kids refused to be picked up from school at the end of the day, bawling that they’d rather stay back and continue doing crafts and reading time with their favourite teacher, more times than he can count. Of all the people to love from afar, he’d gone and picked the warmest person he’s ever known, and then moved in with him to boot.

“I’d love them more if I didn’t fall sick every time they did”, Suga grumbles. His voice is hoarser than it was last night. It’s clearly getting worse.

“Count yourself lucky that you didn’t bring back head lice or something”, Daichi weighs his options, “do you want a waste paper basket or for me to stay?”

Suga cracks his eyes open, glaring, “Daichi. You can’t skip work for me”

“I can get someone to cover for me, and I have some sick days I haven’t used yet”

“Sick days you’ll probably have to use once you catch whatever this is”, Suga points out sensibly, “you know you shouldn’t skip work. There's probably tons of murders that need solving”

“I mean, I hope not”, Daichi says, dithering. It’s stupid, but he knows how much Suga hates being left alone when he’s sick. It would suck for him to be in pain and have to deal with it himself.

“What?” Suga groans as he remains rooted to his spot by his bedside, “I’ll be fine. I’m probably just going to sleep through the day”

Daichi moves the waste basket from where it’s stowed under Suga’s study desk, placing it next to where he’s laying in bed. It’ll be fine. He’ll be fine. Suga’s obviously been sick before and he hasn’t died yet. Still, the thought of him throwing up with no one to rub his back or get him water is kind of sad. And Daichi wants to do it. Maybe that’s what it comes down to. The domesticity of it, that he wants Suga to feel better. That he wants to be the reason Suga feels better.

“Oh my god”, Suga sighs, clearly unimpressed by the way he’s hovering, “come here”

Daichi obeys. Suga leans to the side and for a second, Daichi worries that he’s about to have sick splattered across his feet, but all he does is pull open his bedside drawer and yank out a sticker sheet.

“Here”

Suga slaps a gold star on his arm haphazardly, “If you go to work and don’t spend all your time at the station worrying about me, you can keep this. If you don’t, then I take it back”

Daichi can’t conceal his laughter, adjusting the sticker so it won't fall off immediately, “You’re so-”

“Incredible? Amazing?” Suga interjects, eyes fluttering shut again, “Sleepy? Why yes, I am, thank you for noticing. Please turn the lights off when you leave”

So that’s his dismissal then. But if Suga’s sure he can handle this, then Daichi can trust him enough to go to work with a clear head. He fiddles with the sticker on his arm, smiling down at it.

He isn’t going to dwell on whether or not Suga is feeling better, but he is going to think of how adorable he is, the way time with him feels toffee-sweet, and he thinks that’s an acceptable workaround to Suga’s parameters.

suga thought that he had just imagined the dark shadow always creeping around him whenever he goes outside on his job or errands, but incriminating evidences crop up eventually and they all point towards the nice neighbourhood cop, daichi.

at first, daichi had been an unimpressive persona in his life. they met on the annual career day held for his elementary students; daichi was just another cop among the dozens that were invited to evoke patriotism and professionalism in children.

his eyes met with daichi's for a split second and there was nothing more to it. totally prosaic events. later that very evening, suga was aware of footsteps following his every trek as he commuted from work to home, echos of his own steps ringing in his year, always 2 seconds behind.

it was difficult to decipher the origins of the sound, for the subway is a congested area, but he couldn't deduce his follower even in open area. he chalked it up as a disastrous mix of overimaginative brain and the hordes of crime thrillers he had been consuming and went off to sleep, peaceful like a baby.

for a couple weeks nothing seemed to change until suddenly he stayed up all night, unable to shake off the impending doom of someone watching him. it was like a TV program he watched on a woman with OCD, who'd check her door bolts twenty times each night.

suga faced a wave of fear thrumming through him each night, scutunised and examined like a pair of cameras were focused on him and him only.

he preferred to keep his windows open to let in proper ventilation and have a small amount of light so that he won't be bathed in eerie darkness allnight, but when his errant mind started hallucinating images of petrifying, blood-dreched faces of gasping women with unruly black hairs all over her face peeking through those very windows, he gave in and closed the curtains.

for some time, he still throught that a garganton monster with a severed head or a witch with no legs is just waiting at the threshold of his room, ready to pounce on him. suga hated the darkness. as a kid, he often imagined dire creatures out to get him, mind conjuring the most gruesome images and so once again like with the footsteps, suga blamed the uneasy feeling of being /watched/ on his crippling anxiety.

until he reached an evidence, that he could no longer censure on a fragment on his mind.

it was a note, stained and muddy, left on his doorstep. a small size times roman font glared at him from where he held the paper in his trembling hands.

"i love the way you curl up when you sleep, darling."

indeed, with the note was attached a picture of suga in a fetal position, unsuspecting and pure, on his bed.

he couldn't ignore the blaring sounds any longer. the very same day, he lodged a complain with the police. officer sawamura seemed promising and earnest, and his eager yet disciplined eyes led suga to believe that his FIR was in safe hands. something seemed a bit... off though.

over the next days, he received many notes ranging from

"the way you sneezed when you smelled those daisies was so cute, baby,"

to

"damn, i watched you shower yesterday. what would i not give to lick your armpits and trace your belly with my tongue".

attached with almost each note were evidences that these claims weren't unrefuted.

suga grew panicked but each time officer sawamura claimed that he had the situation under control and true to his words, two security guards were installed outside his door at all times.

the notes stopped.

to take him mind off the whole stalking crisis, his best friends atsumu and oikawa begged him to go on a long distance drive to the country side to visit atsumu's old senpai and oikawa's fiancee and he obliged.

throughout the trip, he never felt the suffocating gaze and resounding footsteps he had become so acomousted to it was liberating, really. when roaming through the local fairs on his own, confident that his stalker had lost his trail, he bumped into officer sawamura.

"i didn't know you were visiting the countryside too, officer!", suga felt a twinge of annoyance, looking at the cop's nonchalance at the case. he felt that the man wasn't really working to capture the criminal and now look at him horsing around on vacation!

"ah, i came to visit my grandma's tomb. its her first death anniversary, you know.", sawamura eyes were so sad that suga instantly felt regret at judging the mourning man so soon.

"why don't you come in for some tea. kita san did say guests are welcome, officer."

"please call me daichi, sugawara-san. i am not on duty."

"only if you call me suga."

they both smiled and suga was so caught up in daichi's many stories of his cases, that he just forgot to ask how his own stalking case has come along, until they were back on the road to Miyagi, daichi graciously letting him ride shotgun on his car, as atsumu and oukawa wanted to stay behind a little longer.

slowly slowly, the stalking incidents started to diminish and then completely disappear, just like how suga's feelings for daichi started awakening like a flower blooming from a bud, till he couldn't keep it in any longer.

daichi had became one of his best friends since the trip and they met for coffee atleast once every week, but something in the back of his mind still clawed like a rabid dog at his consciousness. he ignored it.

one day, daichi confessed to him on his own accord and suga felt joy burst through him. even when daichi softly stroked his cheeks and kissed him gently, the blaring alarms in his mind didn't cease their warning sirens. six monthes later, he moved in with daichi and they were as happy as a clam.

ofcourse, there had been odd moments like daichi knowing about his oyster allergy without suga recollecting that he ever told him that and the fact that daichi somehow already understood his early morning routine and don't mind how dark and intense his eyes somehow turned, but hey maybe daichi is just good at guessing things.

during spring cleaning, when daichi was drafted off to another city, suga found a small box in the storeroom, the likes of which he had never seen before. he shou6dk probably wait for daichi but curiousity gripped him in a vice and he broke open the box

inside were perhaps hundreds of his photos, all candid and in a state of unawareness, in his old house, back when his hair was closely cropped to his head. a quick glance around the room showed him a typewriter, with some notes exactly like the ones he was so afraid of once tucked carefully in the box along with some objects.

his socks, his fucking bathroom scrub, his used deodorant sticks and other items which he had lost over the period of the stalking reign.

suga's heart sped up, like a wild animal's who's prey.

daichi, the love of his life, the man he trusted his world with, was his stalker.

Summary: takes place during s1e11 where Suga tells Ukai that he’s okay not being the official setter. Daichi and Asahi follow him, which leads to emotional confessions and promises made to be together forever.

Sawamura Daichi’s favorite time of day is the morning. 

He loves the soft illumination of his apartment by sunlight filtering in through cream colored blinds. He loves the smell of freshly slept in bed sheets mixed with the slight musk of a recent shower. But most of all, he loves the sounds that he wakes up to each and every morning. 

Daichi wakes slowly, stretching the sleep out of his well muscled arms before reaching down to rub at crusted eyes. He gets out of bed, one leg at a time, ready to follow his morning routine. He stretches, showers, tidies up the room, and makes his way into the sitting area. He does things quickly and efficiently, a force of habit due to his occupation as a police officer. But he also does things quickly and efficiently so he could make his way to his favorite part of the day. 

When he enters the sitting area, the first things he notices are always the sounds that greet him. The sizzling of food cooking on the stove, the light tinkling of the windchimes by the kitchen window, and the humming coming from the chef himself. 

“Aha! Good morning, Captain! Finally awake, are we?” Koushi says with a grin. 

Sugawara Koushi, despite initial appearances, is neither a quiet nor soft man. He is a cheery man - full of joy, full of life, full of sound. He leaves traces of himself behind everywhere he goes, even if he isn’t doing so intentionally. That’s just the kind of man he is, and he fills the hearts of every person he meets without even trying. So when Daichi hears Koushi cooking their meals, humming in the kitchen, greeting him in the morning - he knows it’s the start of another wonderful day. He knows that no matter what comes his way that day, everything will be okay. Because he will have started his day hearing Koushi’s voice, and when he comes home after a long day he’ll be greeted by Koushi’s voice once again. 

“Smells delicious, Koushi.” Daichi fondly smiles at the man who is still preparing both breakfast and lunch, “What are you making today?”

“Since we had your favorite yesterday, today we’re having mine. Super spicy mapo tofu with a side of green beans, Captain!” Koushi says all this with a grin. 

Daichi shakes his head disapprovingly, yet he can’t help but grin back. “It’s been 10 years already, you really should stop calling me Captain. It’s a little embarrassing.”

“Absolutely not! It’s cute, and all our precious kouhai think so too. You should cherish the title, Captain. Now stop lounging around, I haven’t started the coffee yet.” 

“Hai hai, Sensei.” 

The smile hasn’t left Daichi’s face all morning, but it usually doesn’t when he starts a morning like this. 

The apartment is quiet save for the low sizzling of the food on the pan and the slow drip of brewing coffee. The occasional wind will leave a quiet chime ringing through the apartment while Koushi hums quietly, slowly plating breakfast and putting their lunches into neat little bento boxes. 

After knowing Koushi for so many years, Daichi never thought that the two of them would end up here like this. Koushi’s presence in his life has always been a constant, and Daichi finds that he often forgets how deeply embedded they are into each other’s lives until they are separated. Even days feel like years when they are apart, but when they are together Daichi finds himself often forgetting that Koushi is even there. He’s the very air that Daichi breathes, the very blood that flows through his veins. They exist with one another, and they cannot exist without one another. And Daichi finds himself, particularly in the calm moments of the everyday like these, so incredibly grateful for the path of life that has brought him - no, both of them - here, together. It’s in moments like these that Daichi can’t help but remember how much Sugawara means to him, and how incomplete his life would be without him.

“What's on your mind?” Koushi breaks the silence as he’s setting the plates onto the table, “You were staring off into space.” 

Daichi smiles, soft and tender, a love worth a thousand lifetimes in his eyes. 

“Just about how lucky I am.”

“HuH?? What are you going on about? It’s too early for whatever strange thoughts run through your head. Just come over and eat breakfast, you sappy fool.” Is Koushi’s response, but there’s a sappy grin on his face as well. 

Breakfast goes on as usual, the pair sitting quietly and enjoying the peace of the morning before a hectic day. But today felt just right to Daichi. The weather was perfect, breakfast was perfect, waking up to Koushi every morning was perfect. And without thinking the words just left his mouth.

In which Daichi and Suga discover the trials of navigating a fake marriage with real feelings.

Sawamura Daichi. 

Stubborn, silly, strong Daichi. Hot-tempered, tired Daichi who cares too much and gets hurt sometimes. Gentle, kind, steadfast Daichi, with the careful hands and ready smile. Daichi who tries to help everyone and keeps his promises.

This is the person Koushi knows, the one he has fallen in love with.   

Koushi also knows that Daichi cannot dissemble past a certain point, that he has his heart in everything. 

What Koushi isn’t sure of, is afraid to know, is: Has Daichi put his heart into this marriage?
