Dream Daddy
The other day, my husband did the baby-wearing in the grocery store - itās usually my task but he insisted.
As we were leaving the store an older woman walked past my husband and exclaimed ā youāre doing a great job!ā
My first thought was āsheās right! You are doing a great job!ā
Then, a typical, trendy thought quickly commandeered: āwell, why doesnāt anyone praise ME when Iām baby-wearing? Just cause heās the dad, he gets extra points?ā
For the first time in my adult life, I realized how toxic it was to think that way.
The older woman was absolutely right: He was doing a great job. It was his morning to rest before work and he chose to go shopping with me. Him baby-wearing meant I could move around the store, freely. He interacted with our baby the whole time and can I just say that he looked damn good using the baby carrier, which took some convincing to get him to use.
That encouragement probably made his whole month.
Iām not going to be bitter that he got praise for doing something that I normally do without anyone thinking twice about it.
I honestly have yet to see many dads baby-wear. Heās doing something that typically a woman would do. So I can imagine how trepidatious it might feel to do so in public. But he did so proudly & because he really wanted to.
