got dragged into a Perilous battle today
i know im getting better at this dam game bc suddenly i remembered what it was like when i played on Threatening for the very first time
MAN im so sad da:i multiplayer is dying....... no one's ever on, and it's a struggle to get even a group of 3 sometimes
it's been one of my fav things to play but it sucks playing on your own
the problem w da:i multiplayer versus me3 multiplayer is just that. unlike me3m, where resetting characters to level 1 doesnt give you any advantage, in da:im you gain skill points. so you actually cant improve without constantly resetting to helpless baby stage
(on the other hand, me3m squads are never less than 4 people for any length of time. maybe helpless baby stage wouldn’t be so helpless baby in da:im if we weren’t fighting in a squad of TWO)

Rating: G, Gen Characters: Valo-kas, assorted multiplayer characters Summary: in which various (mp) inquisition agents have the chance to get to know the valo-kas. banters in the style of the main game
Hall: You know, I don't think I've ever seen you with a staff. Baqoun: Nope. Hall: ...Aren't you a mage? Baqoun: Yep! Hall: Don't you need one? Baqoun: Listen, if you could turn into an enormous growly bear, would you piddle around with a little stick? Hall: Point taken.
Sidony: Is there any in your number who is not a shapeshifter? Sata-kas: Are you kidding? Kaariss wouldn't be caught dead shapeshifting. Sidony: Good. Then there is at least one among you with some sense. Sata-kas: (laughs) Kaariss? The one who refused to eat bird's meat for five days because they said it was "interfering with their muse"? Sidony: I retract my previous statement; you are all fools. Sata-kas: That's the spirit!

An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Rating: G, Gen Characters: Cillian, Lavellan Summary: Arahel is a mage who uses a sword; many Dalish find this laughable, or at least, impractical. So they're not expecting to meet another Dalish mage who does the same.
It was late in the afternoon, and the sun filled Skyhold's open spaces like water, seeping across the dirt-trodden ground and searing Arahel's eyes. They turned a little more, angling their body away from the sun as they took another sweep at the training dummy in front of them, movements quick and sharp.
Then, they slowed, reaching out with their magic until the world around them began to shimmer—the Fade, touching into the physical world in a way they hadn't experienced since they'd left for Skyhold.
"You use the Dirth'ena Enasalin," came a voice, and Arahel started, the world flashing back into focus as their concentration broke.
An elven man stood a few feet away, white hair falling around skin even darker than Arahel's, a variation on their own vallaslin lining his face—June, god of crafts. Arahel's hands tightened uneasily on their sword; they'd had enough disapproval from their own clan's craftsman. "What about it?" they said warily.

da:i is just perfectly set up for an orchestra au tbh. listen
it's not a paid orchestra; just a mix of university students and local residents who want to play. cassandra and leliana manage to wrangle a saturday practice space in a small church--they've been trying to find a conductor for months, but for whatever reason, none of their previous conductors are free (the warden is off doing charity work, while hawke was working for a sinking company before promptly disappearing to god knows where).
but no big deal, they can just sightread stuff the first week, get a feel for things
cassandra has them tune (she plays oboe), and then, oh right, no conductor, calls out for the first chair violin to please just, count them in. this turns out to be the inquisitor, largely through musical chairs, it being the first week and all. of course, the inquisitor's conducting experience amounts to one class of waving a pencil in the air, but it’s not like they’re gonna have to properly conduct, right?
(wrong. they end up leading the damn orchestra)
anyway. instruments.
leliana, cullen, and josephine are percussionists; the inquisitor may conduct but these 3 are doing the heavy lifting here. also id like to point out that like many percussionists, leli and josie play like. 15 instruments each, not including percussion. it's a lifestyle
dagna is a student composer who showed up on their doorstep with armfulls of experimental compositions they debut when they're not playing off worn photocopies of more traditional pieces
solas plays first violin, though from the number of conducting tips he gives the inquistor they feel like he's done it before; harding leads the second violins and agents like charter. cole is a matter of some contention; he used to play (2nd) violin, but switched to viola, to solas's dismay and varric's great satisfaction
(varric and sera play viola, of course. have you met a viola? im right.)
bull plays cello (big with a soulful sound?); as soon as bull agreed to join, he brought his entire uni cello section, "the chargers".
blackwall plays double bass (rhythmic, dependable); dorian plays trumpet (a little flashy); vivienne plays flute ("are you playing piccolo on this piece?" "my dear, nothing could tempt me to touch that screeching instrument")
morrigan joins them a few months in for a piano solo on one particular piece; her son sits at the back of the church, quietly watching them play
oh and maryden is a communications major who makes them a facebook page so people will actually hear about when and where they're playing.
also multiplayer bc i love them:
amund - bass
argent - first violin (but like. the back of the section)
belinda - flute/piccolo (how can you be so cheerful making that noise at this time of the morning)
cillian - first violin (stand partners w neria)
hall - second violin
katari - dear god i just dont have a solid grasp of this dude, maybe bassoon??
korbin - tuba
luka - composer, probably friends w dagna
neria - first violin
rion - second violin. probably was friends w cole before he switched; gets in trouble for trading cross-section jokes w varric
sidony - french horn
tamar - clarinet
thornton - bass
zither - trombone. i know he plays a lute ingame but. definitely trombone
one thing i find really funny about dai multiplayer is how everyone seems to be allergic to playing anything but a mage (...myself included). which, like, i dont begrudge them, bc a team of mages does just fine, at least on easiest difficulty which is what ive been playing
what i DONT understand is that the second most common class is rogue, specifically archer. i RARELY see a warrior, when youd think itd be useful to have a tank, meanwhile you have these lil squishy archers running around dying all over the place
