“Space Florida, really?” Yaz wrinkled her nose. She was sat on the stairs of the console room, hugging a banister. The lights in the TARDIS pulsed sky blue and sweet orange, mirroring her request to go somewhere—anywhere—warm. The Snavalorian Ice Caves were brilliant, but freezing, and judging by the mob of Yeti who had chased them out, she and the Doctor had well overstayed their welcome. 

“Florida Three, if you want t’get technical,” the Doctor said, fiddling with a switch on the central console. Since her jailbreak a few months ago, she’d been restless, unable to stop moving, always brimming with potential energy—but maybe she’d always been like that? Her anxious meddling caused a light above them to flicker. Did the TARDIS have a lightswitch or was it just ticklish? “Florida Two is widely regarded as a mistake, since the politicians were left in charge. I won’t take you there. Florida Three, though—she’s breathtakin’, Yaz. At least three sunsets a day, with beaches on all sides... we can take a fan boat ride through a marsh to look at animals! All sorts of absolutely fantastic wildlife there. Have you ever seen birds with spoon beaks? Groupers as big as a house? They have those!”

“Do they still have alligators in Space Florida?” Yaz asked, pushing off from the steps. She went to stand beside the Doctor, running her fingers along the edge of the console. “Not sure I trust you to behave yourself around things with sharp teeth. Remember the shark-piranhas of Thoros Gamma?”

The Doctor opened her mouth as though she was going to argue before snapping it closed. 

“They also have incredible food, I’ll have you know,” she said instead, jutting out her jaw in indignation. “Florida Three has a policy where s’long as you’ve got one foot on dry land, you can stay. Loads of history, loads of people travelling through. Best guava pastries in the whole universe. I could treat you to dinner—I can do that now, finally programmed the interplanetary debit card. It’s right here in my left—right—inner! Inner pocket. Always keep your money in a secret place, so the expression goes. I think. Won’t Graham be happy? No more doing dishes on alien planets. What do ya say? Florida Three, just you and me? We can get the pastries, watch a sunset on the plaza over the water, feed some space manatees, get stuck in traffic, see some ugly buildings, pick oranges, go to the galaxy’s best pirate museum—”

“Why would we want to get stuck in traffic?” Yaz asked, stomping on the pedal for a custard cream. The TARDIS was kind—always made sure hers were gluten-free. 

The Doctor squinted at her. “It’s an authentic Florida experience.”

“That’s terrible,” Yaz said around a mouthful of biscuit.
