It started with those damned glasses. You paid it no mind at first, your boyfriend switched up his style and prescription, who cares? Then it was the suit jackets, not complete suits but the jackets with simple slacks and loose ties; Kyungsoo knew the effect he had on you. He texted you often, asking which tie you preferred, all while dumping all the info he can about the latest novel you listed on your online TBR:
Did she really go that far in Yellow face??? I love a unreliable narrator but she's too far gone
I'm halfway through the book and I can see Booktok foaming at the mouth for Snow
If Ring Shout doesn't get the Sinners treatment, my villain era might be starting soon
You adored how in tune he was with your hobbies yet the constant texts and just him being aware of what Booktok even was baffled you.
So you decided to text back as a joke: Are you in your performative man era now, huh? You gonna keep doing what I like?
Kyungsoo took an entire hour to respond, probably catching up on the latest in The Hunger Games series while sipping whatever trending drink on a cafe menu.
He responded with a picture of him with his white dress shirt unbuttoned, showing off his chest and a goofy grin on his face, brown hair askew. There was another picture under that, riskier. You were alone at home yet you sunk on the sofa anyway as you scrolled down. This one was angled higher to keep his face in frame as it aimed down to his lowered slacks and gray briefs. A slight bulge was there, peeking at you.
Maybe? Do you like this?
It took him another hour to come over, a book tucked under his arm after you answered the door.
"Hi," he said, stepping inside and kissing your forehead as if he didn't send a convert dick picture a while ago.
"Hey."
"I started Sunrise On The Reaping, did you want to check out the first chapter or--"Kyungsoo stopped, turning to you. "You all right?"
His blank face made your blood boil, playing the nonchalant game and still making his priority about the books. Sure you'll play his game but your way. You were getting something out of this.
You took his hand and drug him to the sofa, pushing him to the couch by the chest.
"Jagi?" you pressed a finger to his lips, silencing him.
"I really don't want to read right now, do you?"
Kyungsoo chuckled, loosening his tie a bit. "Yeah, I-I mean I wanted to--that's what you wanted, right? For me to be engaged in what you like."
You nodded, plopping down on his lap, eliciting a groan from him. "So you don't want to talk about those pictures you sent me earlier?"
His face heated while you purposely moved your ass across his clothes cock, red filling the features below his low hanging glasses. "Shit, Y/N."
"What?" you said, smiling. "I can't sit on my boyfriend's lap?"
"Can't we just read?"
He's still avoiding the subject; you decided to amp up the pettiness: you rose from his lap, and slid to the spot beside him in order to grip the front of his belt.
"Y/N--"
You cut him off with a kiss that he returned immediately, hands around your waist as you fumbled with the belt, undoing it and yanking his pants down his ankles. The tent in his briefs was bigger than in the photo; Kyungsoo was needy. You could tell with how he painted against your lips, hips jerking against nothing.
"You OK, baby?" you asked, pulling back from his lips.
Kyungsoo captured your lips this time, laying a barrage of kisses across your face and down to your jaw, sucking your neck.
"Kyungsoo," you groaned, hands snaking underneath his briefs.
He sighed as you touched his hardening length.
"Please, later," he cried. "I-I need you."
"Really? Now? After you left me high and dry a few hours again," you spoke, stroking him slowly.
"I'm sorry," he groaned. "I'm being well read for you."
You bit your lip, thighs shifting at how needy he was, how aroused he was for you. Only you. "Seriously? So, you aren't being performative?"
Kyungsoo shook his head. "No! I am doing it for you, but I'm really enjoying it."
You turned your head to let out a pitying coo. "Aw, well that's nice to here."
You stood up to strip out of your pants and underwear, revealing the tiny bit of slick already accumulating from your thighs. Kyungsoo's hands found your waist, mesmerized by the curves of your body--eagerly awaiting you. Instead of straddling him, you sat on his length slow, breathing in as he filled you. Once he was inside all the way to the hilt, you reached over and grabbed the book.
"Jagi," he groaned.
You opened the book and scanned the pages, not moving, sighing as Kyungsoo struggled. His hands found your waist again and dug at your sides, begging you to move.
"B-Baby, I-I'm trying to read like you wanted."
"I-I'm sorry, please move," he moaned.
You tossed the book to the floor and shifted to straddle him, wrapping your arms around his neck. "What are you sorry for, hm?"
You bounced a bit on his cock, forcing him to gasp.
"I'm sorry for teasing you earlier, fuck!" Kyungsoo moaned, tightening his grip on your waist. "Please just ride me."
The desperation in his voice had you giggling until he started thrusting into you, pleading again with those brown eyes of his. His length hit your sweet spot exactly how you wanted earlier; you soon did what he wanted, riding him as your eyes rolled back, moving against him ferociously.

a/n: it's been so, so long since i wrote an exo drabble, but all it took was seeing this video back at my timeline on twitter that boom, i had inspiration.
you flipped through the channels on the tv, but there was nothing too interesting. it was a sunday afternoon, your place was smelling like the cookies you and kyungsoo just baked as a dessert for that cozy autumn day.
kyungsoo, cuddled up beside you on the couch, had an arm around your bare leg, caressing your thigh and then your knee while he stared at his phone.
suddenly, he started humming a melody, his fingers sometimes tapping against your skin to the beat he was listening only inside his head. soon enough he started to sing too - just a few words, trying to get the right tone, the right run up.
"hm, this doesn't feel right", he said, taking note on his phone. "love, what do you think?"
"hm?", you turned your attention to him, almost gasping when he looked up at you with those big eyes.
kyungsoo sang again, looking at you. the song said something about heartbreak, as you could get from the 'you left and now i don't know what to do' lyric he was trying to get it right.
"i think...", he began. "that maybe i should try going higher with the last note?"
"it sounded just right to me", you replied, hand reaching for his hair so you could caress it.
"i don't know, i don't think i like it."
with a sigh, kyungsoo blocked his phone, putting it aside and resting his head against your touch.
"you can figure it out tomorrow, not now."
he looked up at you again, the same big brown eyes that made him look just like that cute, crying emoji.
Howdy Cowpeople!
This one is... hefty. This wasnât supposed to be as long as it was but when I get in a groove... I think I made it obvious but I just wanted it to be over L O L.
This one is pretty niche, but hopefully it can be enjoyed by both sides as it is a driver!reader.

2015
âCan you explain this picture?â The reporter asks, hovering in front of you with a phone in hand. The crappy quality is amplified as they have zoomed into the point where the picture is unrecognizable. You squint your eyes to see it and canât make out quite what theyâre trying to show.
âSorry, w-what is that?â You ask, drawing back and squinting your eyes, resisting the urge to close them from exhaustion. Whoever decided it would be a good idea to do interviews after nearly 100 continuous laps in some barely held together race car with no break was a sadist. No other explanation.
âOh! Itâs a picture of you in a car with a guy.â The reporter said eagerly and shoved the phone your way. You briefly looked at the camera, an unimpressed look on your face, before turning back to the phone and squinting again.
You paused for a minute and drew back, your face still scrunched up, and exhaled.
âNahhhhhh.â The drew out word left your mouth.
The reporterâs head tilted and they frowned.
âBut it is! Itâs you in Seoul after the Japanese Grand Prix!â He continued, looking very determined. You plastered a confused expression on your face.
âIâve never been to Seoul before.â His face dropped and he turned back to his phone, as though trying to rationalize what he was hearing.
âHave you just taken a picture of⊠two random people in a car? To me it honestly doesnât even look like anything cause itâs so zoomed in but to each their own.â You finished your words with a shrug.
âNo, my source told me that that was 100% you! They said they saw you get in the car at the airport.â He continued on, undeterred by your flat disregard.
âI hate to say it, your contactâs wrong. Iâve never even set foot in the country.â You shrugged before turning to your PR manager who was gesturing for you to leave, with rather forceful movements. That was to clue you in that you were in trouble. With her personally or with the boss man, you didnât know.
âLovely to see you again, though.â You smiled and held your hand over. The interviewer tentatively took it and you exchanged good-byes before you turned around and left to go onto more interviews. The glance you exchanged with your PR manager told you that you were lucky you had not been caught out on your multiple lies and you heaved a sigh of relief to yourself.
Being the only female driver in a heavily male dominated sport was incredibly stressful. Add to that the eyes of reporters trying to find you doing anything remotely weird to spin it into a scandal and you had a lot of things to worry about. Especially since you had just started a relationship with a highly coveted Kpop singer which you were determined to keep under wraps.
You both had a bet running with each other. The first person to reveal the relationship would lose. There was no consequence but your pride, something which both of you had a bit too much of.
And so, a game was born. It simultaneously made you more careful of revealing your relationship while also making it a fun game.
This also meant that you had to start constantly lying to reporters to get out of tricky situations. Surely nothing bad could ever come from this.
2016:Â
âHow does it feel to be a key contender for the championship?â Asked a reporter, directing it to, of course, Lewis Hamilton, who was sat beside Daniel in a panel of drivers. You were sat on the other side of Daniel, the small desk in front of you reaching for miles on either side.
As Lewis gave the carbon copy response that he had given to every interviewer so far, Daniel leaned over to whisper in your ear.
âIâm surprised they havenât called him out on that yet.â He then reached for his plastic water bottle and took a sip. You considered this for a second before leaning to his side and answered, not turning your face from the crowd of reporters.
âIâm surprised they havenât called you out on your disgusting trim.â He jolted forward at this unprompted attack on his hair and the choking sound he emanated drew attention from all in the room, all watching him with curious eyes as he tried to regain his breath.
âYou alright mate?â Lewis asked, one of his eyebrows arching.
âY-yeah Iâm fine.â Daniel replied, waving his hand, eager to have attention off of his spluttering. It took a while but eventually all the cameras were aimed back at Lewis, so Daniel took the opportunity to elbow you hard in the side, your reaction being to topple off your chair dramatically. Usually one for the dramatics, youâre not sure youâve ever seen Daniel want the cameras off him so much.Â
Hidden behind a small desk, you could only hear the questioning tones calling out your name and see Danielâs slightly panicked face urging you to get up and back on your chair. With one single hand, you reached for the desk and slowly pulled yourself up.
You released a deep breath as you hauled yourself into your seat and turned to face the crowd of reporters who were looking at you. With a grand hand gesture, you motioned for them to continue with their interviews and turned slightly to Daniel with a smile. He shot you back an exasperated glance before your name was called from the crowd of reporters. You looked towards the reporter and he began speaking.
âSo, as youâre the only female on the grid I feel the need to ask, if you could date any of the drivers, who would it be?â The eager face he had contrasted with your entirely unimpressed face. You could hear Daniel begin to start speaking and you could feel the defensive energy emanating from the rest of the drivers on the panel, but before any of them could interrupt with scathing criticism about the misogyny that permeated the question, you replied to the reporter.
âLiterally none of them, Iâd rather die.â Your response was met with general silence before Daniel started laughing as usual.
âReally? You wouldnât fancy any of them?â The reporter asked, almost in disbelief.
âNo!â You said almost equally in disbelief.
âIâm fine with what I have at home!â You added on after a second.
âAre you saying youâre in a relationship???â The reporter was on the edge of his seat, others shoving their microphones and cameras trying to get a good shot. You dramatically pondered that for a second before replying.
âI wouldnât say that, I just have other things at home.â You said that and then leaned back, shrugged, and didnât say anything else into the mic even at the reporters continual uproar as they took in the implications of that statement.
You, luckily, were able to avoid the increasingly weird questions by just not answering and smiling. You werenât as lucky to miss the smirks thrown your way by the other drivers.
2017:
âIt doesnât count!â You said in disbelief, aiming it at the microphone of your phone.
âMmm Iâd say it counts.â Kyungsoo replied back teasingly, his voice echoing into your AirPods.Â
âYou canât go back on your word!! You said it was fine last year!â You were sitting at a table in your company's hospitality, having a conversation with Kyungsoo on the phone, blissfully unaware of the interviews going on outside the building which had a clear view into the small area.Â
âYeah but itâs been two years, one of us has to call it quits soon.â Your face contorted before Kyungsoo quickly amended his statement.
âThe bet! The bet! Sorry, that came out the wrong way.âÂ
You just shook your head, a small smile growing on your lips.
âYou bastard, you had me a little worried.â He scoffed in response. He had been speaking quietly into the phone as he was hiding in a closet in the SM building, taking a break from practice to talk to you. A true charmer.
âAs if.â He replied shortly, a loud scuffling heard on his side.
âOne second.â He said, as a banging sound came through into your headphones.
âCome on Hyung! Get off the phone and come back before someone else finds you!â Kaiâs voice could be heard through the door. A pause before the banging started again.
âAlso tell her I said hello!â You giggled at the younger manâs words and Kyungsooâs sigh in response.
âIâll call you after the race, do your best, I love you.â Kyungsoo muttered into his phone before shouting back to Kai something about respect and to shut up. It just made you laugh more.
âI love you too, practice well and Iâll call you soon.â You finally said in response after the yelling died down.
âBye.â He said before quickly tacking on another âlove youâ and then he hung up.
After he hung up you just stared at your screen for a second with a smile you would 100% not call radiant on your face. It was quickly wiped off when your PR manager popped up out of nowhere and started talking about interviews, causing you to switch to English as you stood up and followed him.
However, the interview still captured your little moment and the conversation preluding it. You knew this because, when you went back to your phone after the race, Baekhyun had sent you a picture of your smile through the tinted glass with a smirking emoji as well as a picture of Kyungsoo on the floor in the closet in the dark talking to you on the phone, not to mention the hounding you got at the next press conference.
2018:
You knew it was risky to do a live in your own apartment, especially since you were in a completely different country than where you were claiming you were.
But your PR team wanted you to do it, and you couldnât exactly tell them no, even if you were currently lying to them about your circumstances. You were a bit worried that something unexplainable might happen like the South Korean national anthem suddenly blaring but what you werenât worried about was the person who you were living with coming back and interrupting your live.
Kyungsoo was at practice and, while you were ok with him skipping it to talk to you on the phone, you didnât want him to skip it now, as you had been promised a few days without any interruption if he went to every practice. So he was at practice and you were fulfilling all your expected PR duties for the next couple of days, which included the live.
Regardless of your hesitations, you set up your phone on your coffee table facing the entrance to your home and sat on the couch before turning on the live. Immediately people joined, flooding the chat and making your phone vibrate.
âUhhh hello everyone.â You awkwardly greeted as you tried to think of things to say. Kyungsoo would be fantastic at this, you couldnât help but think, always having to do liveâs with his members.
âHowâs everyoneâs days been?â You settled on and watched the responses roll into the chat. You noticed a few drivers had joined your live and even a few of the boys from F2 and F3 were watching, which you thought was pretty nice of them considering it was mainly you rambling for around 30 minutes.
Your manager wanted you to do an hour minimum for the live and the time seemed to stretch for years, you continuously making small talk and occasionally replying to comments. You even snuck in a few jokes for the other drivers before, around the 55 minute mark, a sound came from your end.
You furrowed your eyebrows as you wondered where the noise was coming from, looking around the apartment. Quickly standing up, you looked around the apartment, making a lighthearted joke about ghosts as you nervously tried to find the origin of the sound.
You realised that sound was the wrong key being put in the lock as soon as you registered the sound of the correct key being put in.
As Kyungsoo opened the door, you made the biggest leap you think you have ever made. It wouldâve had to have been around 4 meters surely. Somehow you had leapt onto the coffee table, knocking your phone down. Kyungsoo was staring at you weirdly as you violently gestured at him to shush. He raised an eyebrow.
âAre you ok?â He asked, his deep voice sounding as lovely as ever. You took a second, contemplating your options in this circumstance before coming to a logical conclusion.
You started to scream.
âGET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!â Kyungsooâs face shifted to one of confusion as yours was full of desperation.
âYOU CRAZY PSYCHO! GET OUT!!â You continued to yell in perfect English, a contrast from his peaceful question, and gestured for Kyungsoo to close the door, which he did, albeit very confused.
As soon as he closed the door, you maneuvered yourself so that you werenât facing him and quickly picked up your phone from underneath you.
âOh my god, what just happened.â You said, showing the camera your roof. You picked up the phone and started fidgeting with it.
ââAre you ok?â Yeah Iâm fine, I just gotta figure out how to change the locks. Iâll uh.. Iâll get back to you guys. See you later.â You said absentmindedly, as you ended the live.
You paused for a second, sat back on your heels, and sighed, staring up at the roof. The sound of footfalls reached your ears and you didnât react when Kyungsoo placed a hand on your shoulder.
âIâm not losing this bet.â You mumbled, staring at the ground. An incredulous laugh left him at that as he reached his hand further and brought your face to look at him. A smile that there was no other way to describe but goofy was spread across his face.
âYouâre still thinking of that?â He asked and you nodded.
âI take our bet very seriously.â You said before he slightly shook his head, gave you a kiss on the forehead, and moved towards the kitchen.
You picked yourself up and moved to the dining table as he started work in the kitchen. And, as he made a delicious dinner that you both enjoyed, you started to field off your PR team asking who was in your house and ignoring the comments wondering why the guy was speaking Korean in the middle of England.
2019:Â
It was approximately ten minutes before you had to be in the car and ready to go, and you were half-way there. You had your fireproofs and race suit on and you were being herded towards your car by a crowd of engineers. Strategies and specifics were being directed at you and you could only nod and act as though you were absorbing what they were saying.
Even after four years on the job some people felt they just couldnât rely on you. Honestly, they should just let you do your thing, you knew what you were doing.Â
No! God, ever since Kyungsoo had joined the military youâd been irritable and quick to anger on the track. Your poor engineers were trying their best to get through to you, likely because they wanted to keep their jobs, but youâd been incredibly closed off since after you got back from the honeymoon.Â
Oh yeah, you got married. During a break and right before Kyungsoo was scheduled to start his enlistment, you got married down in a small courthouse with only a few people from either side. You had your family, a few close friends, and a few drivers while Kyungsoo had his family, a few close friends, and the whole of EXO.
It was very emotional and intimate, but that was how youâd describe your relationship so you were very happy with it. You were also extremely happy with the week get-away in the middle of nowhere in New Zealand that followed after, a week of people not recognising both you, farmers markets, and sheep. Lotâs of sheep.
But ever since heâd flown off to do his duty to his country (and shaved his head, no one should look that good with a shaved head) and youâd flown to your next race, youâd been incredibly⊠angry.
You didnât know if it had to do with not seeing Kyungsoo for the better part of two years or having that split immediately after the wedding, but what you did know was that it was affecting your racing so you had to snap out of it.
Being dragged back to the present you quickly hopped in the car and performed all of your checks on the steering wheel and adjusted things while people flitted around outside the car, adjusting things and making sure the car was in proper state.
After a quick radio check, the call to start up for the formation lap (you were in P11 after a pretty dodgy qualifying) was relayed and all around you could hear carâs engines coming to life. You glanced at your engineers and snapped down your visor at their nod, starting the car.
Before you pressed the throttle something quickly came to mind. You rapidly gestured for one of your engineers to come close to you, incredibly conscious of all the cars revving around you. The poor engineer almost sprinted to you as you started to fiddle with the zip of your racesuit, the gloves you were wearing prohibiting you from unzipping it.
The engineer's face was comically concerned and he slowly reached forwards before you looked up and grabbed his outreached hand. His face immediately went to one of shock as you made his hand grab the zip and unzip the front part of the suit.
Choosing to ignore the cameras capturing this interaction you continued unzipping it till it lay around your collarbones, hoping the cameras donât catch any of your naked shoulders. The engineer's face then relaxed as he saw the necklace around your neck and he quickly reached in, almost leaning over the car, to move your necklace around your neck till the latch was in front of him.
He cautiously unlatched the necklace before zipping up your race suit. You immediately relaxed as the pressure around your neck was relieved. Before he could retreat back to the crowd of engineers, you grabbed the hand that wasnât holding your necklace and slapped it appreciatively with your other hand.
He retreated as you powered up the car and started to move it forwards, letting all the cars that needed to go before go before you started to move.Â
Your team radio started up as you were leaving the pit lane.
âYou all had us very confused there.â Your race engineer said as you started your cruise around the track.Â
âYeah, sorry I completely forgot about it. But I thought it was better to take it off.â You said, pressing down on the throttle.Â
âHe better not lose that though. I want that back at the end of the race.â You subtly threatened, suddenly thinking of the rings that were attached to the necklace. You hoped that maybe the cameras hadnât seen your wedding and engagement rings but you knew there was no chance they hadnât not captured it. Oh well.
âI donât know if youâll get it back by the end of the race.â Your engineer said, her tone almost sarcastic.Â
âWhatâs that mean?â You asked, letting the car cruise.
âYouâll probably be killed by your PR team first.â She said bluntly. So bluntly it made you laugh.Â
âIâve got a race to focus on.â You reminded her, leaving out the part that you had a race to think of an excuse as to why you have two rings attached to a necklace around your neck.
And you did think of an excuse, wearing the necklace proudly during post-race interviews and saying it was a family heirloom that had been passed on to you by your grandma whenever you were questioned about it.
The moment still went viral though, people questioning the relationship between you and the engineer. It went viral enough to that you had to suffer through teasing by Daniel and his accomplice Max Verstappen (you didnât know how the kid knew you were married but you suspected it had something to do with an annoying Australian) not to mention the shit being talked in the EXO group chat you were in.
I mean seriously, all of those guys are millionaires, does Chen have nothing else to do with his time than bully the wife of his bandmate?
2020: (sorry Alex)
Somehow you got signed to RedBull on a year contract. Not to say you werenât grateful for the opportunity but you were definitely a bit confused. But anyway, you let bygones be bygones and now you had a 22 year-old dutch nuisance under your wing.
He was a great kid but god, was he traumatized. You were convinced heâd never seen a healthy family dynamic, so you were more than happy to let him see how you and Kyungsoo functioned. Or at least how you functioned when he was not in the military.
You kind of felt like a life coach for the kid, telling him when he was being taken advantage of or when he should continue with something. Youâd been woken up plenty of times in the middle of the night by him drunkenly whining into the phone about wanting to go âhomeâ, something neither of you commented on when he woke up on your couch the next day.
So, safe to say, youâd practically adopted a child without the permission of your husband.
This extended to on the track as well, youâd gotten into a few mild disagreements with Jos Verstappen after his cruel comments which often involved you looking at him angrily and him shit-talking you in interviews about you being a woman. Youâd often have to refrain from saying that youâd always be more of a man than him, but alas, you didnât want to get kicked from your seat.
You knew that Max was extremely appreciative of your dynamic, even commenting on it a few times during interviews, saying that he was very happy to have you as a teammate. After that interview you almost felt like you and his lover, Daniel, were able to give him some sort of an idea of what a normal family relationship should look like.
This sentiment was definitely reinforced when a loud knocking on your Monaco apartment door happened in the early afternoon. It was a weekend with no race, so you were soaking in relaxation. You were having a nice bubble bath after having read for the whole morning, so you were hesitant to hop out of the bath.Â
The knocking persisted however, and with a sigh, you got out of the bath and wrapped a bathrobe around you before loudly yelling youâd be a minute. You tugged on some sweats which werenât yours and put your hair in a towel before eventually making your way to the door.Â
You mightâve taken more than a minute, but it didnât matter when you opened the door and were greeted with the image of Max Verstappen on his knees, face pressed into the expensive hallway carpet. What a sight to see, the prodigy and most highly anticipated driver of his time, lying face-first on the floor.
âWhat the fuck?â You asked, immediately crouching down to his level after a quick glance to see that none of your neighbors had left their apartments to check on the banging (pretentious, self-concerned people).Â
You rolled him over, your confusion doubling as you took in the remorseful look etched across the young man's face, almost tripling as you took in the barely concealed tears in his eyes. Your heart ached though and you pulled him up so that he was sitting on his knees.
âIâm so sorry.â He muttered as your face contorted in confusion. What had happened?
âCome inside Max.â You said quietly, helping him up from his spot on the floor and leading him inside, locking the door after you both. Leading him to the couch, you left him after putting the throw blanket over his shoulders, and went to make both of you a tea.
You noticed your phone constantly vibrating on your kitchen counter and quickly chucked it on do not disturb, not checking the notifications because you were more concerned with your teary teammate.Â
After grabbing the teas you made your way to the couch, setting them down on coasters on the coffee table, before sitting on the edge of the âLâ piece of the couch, so you were facing Max. You grabbed his hand from his lap where he had been nervously picking at his nail beds.
âWhatâs wrong Max?â You asked calmly, bringing his hand to your lap to stop him from hurting himself. He looked up at you, a few tears having rolled down his cheeks.Â
Whatever had happened had fucked him up. You didnât think it was a fight with his dad, heâd sadly become pretty unresponsive to those. You briefly considered him losing his seat but shook that off, he was doing exceptionally well.Â
Maybe youâd lost your seat and he was sent to deliver the news. That would make more sense, especially as your phone was blowing up. You hadnât been performing very well, but you didnât think theyâd drop you from your seat midway through the season, especially during a season as turbulent as this one.
It was the only reason that made sense though, so you prepared yourself for the news that you would be unemployed. Maybe youâd go back to F2 or maybe IndyCar? Or you could just move to South Korea and live there permanently, letting Kyungsoo fulfill his passion for acting and singing while you did a few kart races to occasionally quench your thirst for adrenaline.Â
That actually didnât sound too bad, though youâd definitely have to discuss it with Kyungsoo when he got back from enlistment, which meant around 5 months of unemployment. But hey, you had the money and so did Kyungsoo.
Max snapped you from your thoughts of the future by clearing his throat.
âYou donât know?â He asked, curiously glancing up at you. You furrowed your eyebrows.
âNoâŠâ You said, conveying your confusion. âShould I?âÂ
âHave you checked your phone recently?â Yep, you were definitely getting fired. You should probably start packing now. Maybe Daniel could get his seat back? You shook your head in response to his quiet question.
âIâve just been reading all morning.â Max nodded, a small âahâ leaving his mouth as he stared at the floor. He reached for his tea, his hand leaving your lap. You narrowed your eyes at that, following his movements as he sipped, a gasp immediately leaving his throat as he burnt it.
You immediately cussed and sprung up from your couch to grab a glass of cold water, running back to the couch and giving it to Max, watching as he gulped down the glass. When he finished he turned back to you and thanked you, before pausing for a second and bursting into another round of tears. You placed a hand on his shoulder.
âYouâre really freaking me out Max. Can you please tell me whatâs wrong?â You asked gently, trying to make him catch your eye.
âPromise you won't hate me?â His small voice asked and you internally crumpled at his vulnerable question. Honestly you never thought youâd end up gentle-parenting a teammate like he was a child of yours, especially since you were only like 5 years older than him, but here you were, caring for him like family.
âYes, I wonât hate you Max.â You repeated as he finally caught your eye. He took a deep breath before starting to speak.
âI was doing an interview for the press and they started asking questions about other drivers and my relationship to them. They then asked about you and I said that Iâm really close to you and etcetera.â Ok, seems pretty normal so far. At least you werenât getting fired, hopefully.
âAnd they asked if I see you more as a mother figure or a romantic interest.â He said before quickly turning his eyes away. This confused you before you clued in.
âOh Max.â You said quietly and he turned back to you. âIâm flattered you feel that way but I am married and I am loyal-â
âNo, no, no!â He said, louder than heâd ever spoken in the time since he was on the floor. His cheeks had turned bright red as he looked in your eyes.
âNo, I didnât say that I saw you romantically!â He quickly amended and you breathed a sigh of relief, smiling.
âOk, thatâs good! I didnât want our friendship to be awkward.â You said, looking at him for a response. He just grimaced and averted his gaze. You gestured for him to go on confusedly and he began speaking again.
âAnd I said more like a mother-figure.â A statement which made you feel positive things you donât want to address. âThen I may have accidentally said that, even though I havenât met him, I see your husband as more of a father-figure as well.â He quickly rushed the last part out and you sat, stunned.Â
The room went silent while you processed what he told you. Fuuuuckkk. How much trouble were you going to be in? I mean the team knew, but this wasnât something you could pass off as your grandmother's rings. This was undeniable proof that you had a husband. God press days were going to suck after this unless you could somehow make an excuse.
As time went on he seemed to collapse in on himself, the energy quickly switching to something you didnât like.
âTo be honest I thought you were going to tell me Iâd lost my seat.â You said and Maxâs head snapped up.
âWhat?â He asked, disbelieving.
âYeah I know, crazy.â You laughed, dragging out the last word, trying to establish a more relaxed aura in the room.
âNo, why havenât you kicked me out yet?â It was at times like this you really wanted to punch Jos Verstappen in the face. You made an over exaggerated confused face, hoping the fact that that had never gone through your mind was on display in your face.
âMax, why would I do that?â You asked, your voice very quickly becoming soothing.
âWhy arenât you mad at me? Youâve spent years hiding this! You should be yelling at me!â He said, standing up. You tried, in vain, to get him to sit down by gently calling him, but he started pacing.
âIâve just ruined your chances at revealing this yourself, at ever having another peaceful day in your marriage, and all you can do is make a joke?!â He almost started yelling, clenching his fists. You got fed-up and yelled his name, calling his attention to you.
âYouâre in my house as my guest. You will not tell me what to do or how to handle situations. Sit your ass down.â You yelled, your voice incredibly commanding. He followed your instructions and sat smally in front of you.
âMax. It was eventually going to come out. I donât mind. Iâd much rather it come off handedly from you than maliciously leaked by a random instagram page.â You said and he looked up, almost looking close to tears. You frowned before bringing the boy up into a hug. You stayed like that for a few minutes before you had to ask a question.
âYou didnât reveal who he was though, no?â You asked, still in the hug. You felt Max shake his head and you silently fistpumped behind his back. It wasnât your fault, so it technically didnât count and you hadnât lost the bet.
You were right, by the way, press days were soon filled with questions about your mystery husband instead of your racing. But it was fine, you were somehow able to twist it as though youâd made a joke about having a husband and Max took it seriously.
Phew.
2021: (sorry latifi)
âAnd so today you will be reacting to fan edits of yourselves!â The lady behind the camera finished, prompting you and George to look at eachother. It was early in the season and, even though youâd raced together for a few years, you werenât exactly close, being that before pre-season meetings, you hadnât ever talked. At all.
This meant he didnât know much about your personal life or the whole âhusbandâ thing. Which was fine, youâd tell him in your own time, when you felt your friendship was strong enough. He seemed to be a great kid, though you were determined to not adopt another grown child, especially after the look you got from Kyungsoo when you mentioned the fact you may have âaccidentallyâ had Christmas with Max Verstappen.
But hey, they had finally met during February and it was almost like a Dad saying that his daughter canât adopt a cat while simultaneously cuddling with the cat. Kyungsoo, against his better judgment, had instantly attached to Max and now you were battling for the position of being his favourite driver. Which you were totally not bitter about (you said your favourite EXO member was Sehun in retaliation and he changed your mind very quickly).
Back to the present, the people behind the camera placed a tablet on the table in front of you. It was open on the photo gallery and you could already see some very flattering videos saved to the device.
âYou wanna go first?â You asked, and George nodded before picking up the tablet and scrolling through the photo library. He closed his eyes and landed on one. Loud music immediately began playing from the device, you think âLondon Boyâ by Taylor Swift, and you both watched in varying states of horror as photos and clips of him flashed on the screen.
As the video ended you both accidentally made eye-contact. Now, as an almost 28 year old woman, the simple gesture of looking into your teammate's stricken eyes should not have made burst out laughing as hard as you did. But, god, Georgeâs eyes were expressive. In fairness he also did laugh, though he probably was confused as to why you were laughing so much.
After you caught your breath you could only utter out,
âYour face...â Before peeling back into giggles again. He started laughing again as well before putting the tablet down. In doing so, he accidentally swiped the tablet and the Backstreet Boys started playing, an edit of the 2019 rookies playing as the video.
This chain event caused you to start gasping, the sheer ridiculousness of the videos catching up to you. George only took one look at the tears forming in your eyes before he was also wheezing out harsh breaths from laughing.
It took around 2 minutes for you to look at each other without laughing and, for you both to be able to pick up the tablet without giggling, it took another minute or so. You eventually began scrolling through the tablet, laughing at some and âawwâ-ing at some of the sad ones.Â
Eventually a video came up with the background music to âGive it to meâ by Sistar, an edit of you that was hot but had you gasping at the lyrics.
âWhat?â George looked over to you, curious as to why there was another noise that came out of your mouth than laughing or a strained âwhy?â.
âThe audacity!â You said, as the music continued playing.
âWhat..?â George asked, more confused than previously.
âDo you want to know the lyrics theyâve just edited me to?â You asked, looking over at him, your voice pretending to be offended.
âWhat?â He said, his tone changing again to have a sort of goading lilt.
âWill I even get married before I turn thirty.â You said with an air of finality, turning to glare at the camera, your jaw dramatically hung open. George gasped mockingly.
âHow dare they!â He said sarcastically and you nodded eagerly.
âI know right!â You responded beginning a stereotypical mean girl impression. âHow dare they!â After that little fiasco, you both kept scrolling and laughing (a notable example of this being when an edit of George crying came up, him pushing your shoulders as you continued to laugh).Â
Eventually the video was being wrapped up and George was preparing to do a sort of sign off when he paused and turned to you.
âI know we arenât incredibly closeâŠâ He started and you prepared for a multitude of questions. You didnât know him well enough to predict what he might say, so you went over your predisposed answers to questions in your head.
You knew he wouldnât ask anything uncomfortable, like about your relationship status, or anything really weird, like how many socks do you wash at once. But that left a gaping probability for mildly-weird or mildly-uncomfortable questions. You hoped he wouldnât ask that, but you were still prepared to be asked if you threw out your receipts or kept them.
âBut I didnât know you knew Korean. How did you learn?âÂ
Oh. Fuck.
You did not have an answer for that. How the fuck did you not have an answer for that? You definitely should have had an answer for that. Oh wait, you didnât have an answer because you promised yourself not to tell anyone that you could speak Korean so that you didnât get that question!
The real, close-friends answer was that Kyungsoo had taught you over a range of years and that youâd taken courses so that youâd be able to talk to his friends and family. However you didnât have a PR approved answer because youâd never thought that youâd need one. Time to put your problem solving skills to the test.Â
âUhhhhhâŠâ You said, staring confusedly at George, aware of the seconds that had passed while you were internally monologuing. You hoped your expression didnât convey the level of gob-smacked that you felt but you think it did because Georgeâs face contorted to be one of worry.
âIf thatâs a sensitive topic or something you donât have to answer!â He quickly said as though he was trying to fix the situation. Youâd later learn the George thought before your video that you were kind of âfucking terrifyingâ (his words) and that he was scared heâd screwed up by asking you this and one of his âheroâsâ (his words) wouldnât ever want to talk to him again.Â
âNah, nah. Itâs ok.â You waved him off, desperately trying to think of something. Oh! You knew exactly what to say.
âBasically I just have this really good friend who is Korean and I asked him to teach me for fun.â You said simply, before realising that wasnât good enough considering your reaction.
âI was trying to hide how good Iâve gotten to try and surprise him but I guess itâs ok.â You said, a small smile on your face. George relaxed from his tense state and nodded, a small smile playing onto his lips as well.
âAh thatâs cool. Sorry to spoil the surprise.â You waved him off again and he continued the videoâs outro.
Another good save, you really oughta be hired to problem-solve. And by problem-solving you mean lying to the media. And George. Poor George.Â
2022: (yeah the timelines donât match, donât call me out pls)
A loud banging sounded against your hotel door. You groaned, dropping the book onto your chest from where you held it up. Glancing angrily at the door, you rolled out of bed and stomped over to the entrance. You ripped open the door and prepared to start reaming the person on the other side before letting out a high-pitched scream.
You were in Japan for the Suzuka GP. You always didnât like the Japanese GP because, even though you were incredibly close to Kyungsoo, your schedules never lined up so you could never see him.Â
That fact really grinded your gears, but itâs what you get when you try to schedule something with SM Entertainment. A decisive âNo.â What a great company. To be honest, was Willaims really any better?
No. No they werenât. That mere fact infuriated you enough to make you scream. However, it wasnât the reason you were currently screaming. That was because, standing in your doorway in the middle of the team hotel, was Kai.Â
You hadnât seen him in a few months, you both had busy schedules, so the man appearing on your doorstep was miraculous. You didnât think of why he was there, or how he got there. You just threw your arms around him and gave him a hug.
âOh my god!â You screamed, before immediately regretting it and quickly pulling him into your hotel room before someone came out of their rooms and wondered why he was in front of yours.
âHi!â He said, laughing as he let himself be pushed into your room despite the fact he could pick you up and throw you.
âWhat are you doing here?â You asked changing your pulling into a hug, squeezing the younger man as though he was your child. You had a serious problem with that, treating men almost your age as children. But Kai was more of a brother than a child, to be quite frank. That distinction just meant that he really really bugged you.
âI have a concert tomorrow and I thought I might just stop in.â He said, a smile on his face. âThough it is only me, sorry.â
âThatâs ok!â You said, still in disbelief one of your closest friends was on your doorstep.
âDoes Kyungsoo know?â Kai smirked in response to your question. That was answer enough in itself and you slapped Kai on the shoulder.
âYou shouldâve told him! He mightâve come.â Kai gasped in mock offense.
âWhat am I not good enough? Would you really prefer your husband that much?â He continued in mock offense and you dead-panned him. He just laughed in response.
âI did have to tell the company I was coming though, and they asked me to film a TikTok with you.â He quickly rushed out and you groaned, staring at the sky. What was up with all of these people wanting you to do TikTokâs?! You had all of your team's PR people constantly chasing you with a camera and now you had Kai asking for a video.
âFine.â You ground out and Kai grinned, purposely ignoring your annoyance.
âFantastic!â He said and quickly whipped out his phone, launching into his plans of what to film. Your only artistic input was that he had to cool it on the filters or else you wouldnât film.Â
The video started with the familiar sound of Peaches by Kai and a hand knocking on your hotel door, you opening the door curiously. As the chorus sounded, you recorded Kai dancing in your doorway, incredibly aware of the chance of any of your colleagues walking into the hallway and wondering what the fuck was going on.
The video continued after the chorus, Kai recording you slamming the door in his face with a confused expression. The video then ended with a still image of the both of you doing a heart together with your hands and you let Kai go rampant on the filters, hearts and sparkles flying around on the screen.Â
When you watched it back, Kai waiting at your side eagerly to see your reaction, you did your best to hide the laughing fit you had in reaction to the monstrosity. You couldnât quite hide the gasps that were leaving you though and Kai frowned.
âItâs perfect. I love it.â You said, through your giggles and he smiled.
âI know. Itâs fantastic.â You only nodded because you couldnât trust yourself to talk, a small whine escaping through your lips at the struggle of not laughing.
âDo you want to see the caption?â He asked and you violently nodded your head.Â
âPlease.âÂ
âP15 but still P1 EXO-L.â He read out and you just hung your jaw open.
âYou bastard!â You laughed out.Â
âI put it in Korean as well.â Your only response was to hit him, hard, while still laughing and shaking your head.
âShould we run it by your PR team before posting?â Kai asked, taking a serious note. You looked to him and sucked in air through your teeth.
âNahhhh.â You replied and he shrugged, and clicked post.
âI should probably tell Kyungsoo you were here before he finds out through the internet.â You said, reaching for your phone. Kai nodded vehemently.
One phone call later, an angry Kyungsoo and an apologetic Kai later, the TikTok was making its rounds and your phone was blowing up, your poor PR agent about to have a heart attack.
On that delightful note Kai left your hotel room, farewelled with a minute long hug and a well-wish for his concert, and you were left to phone your PR agent who just screamed into the phone for 10 seconds before actually speaking.
Of course, during the press releases for the rest of the season, you talked about how much of an EXO-L you were and how close of a friend you were to Kai. This didnât come without dating rumours but, due to one poorly angled camera shot of your disgusted face when a reporter suggested dating to your face, that was shut down pretty quickly.Â
Still no one had shipped you with the other EXO members though, so you werenât even close to losing the bet. (Though you had been asked which EXO member was your favourite, which you responded to with a smirk.)
2023:
It was a good race, you finishing P4 which was a huge improvement since last season. Your team was on top of the moon as were you, smiling from ear to ear. You were currently in the press area, getting asked questions left and right about the car and your performance.
You were adequately responding to each question, sometimes looking questioningly your PR agent when you werenât sure how to respond. A loud crash sounded through the area that drew the attention of most in the area as a reporters chair fell to the ground. They had jumped up at something on their phone and, like everyone else in the pen, you were wondering what had them so fired up.
Then their eyes darted up and made eye-contact with you. Your internal monologue quickly changed from questioning to a repeated loop of âOh no. Oh no.â as they advanced your way, moving like a predator stalks their prey. They thrusted their phone under your nose, the shitty little mic attached to it capturing every breath you took and the many cameras in the area capturing your wide eyes.
The reporter addressed you by name before starting to speak.
âDo you know of a man by the name Doh Kyungsoo?â They asked and your world cracked. What on earth had happened? How did they know? All you knew was that it was time for the one acting class your mum had made you take to try and sway you from racing to come to full effect.
âI think heâs from that band Kaiâs in, yeah?â You responded after a second of fake pondering. The reporter's eyes narrowed like a hawk.
âYou wouldnât say you were close? Not close enough to get married perhaps?â The reporter asked, clearly trying to stir the pot. Oh my god, was this a prank? How the fuck did they know? How were you supposed to play this off? Would this jeopardize your career?
âUhhm noâŠ?â You said, incredulously, fixing them a scandalized stare. They sarcastically nodded.
âOh really? Then whatâs this?â They said and shoved their phone closer to your face till you saw a picture of you and Kyungsoo on your wedding day. How did they get this? Had one of your small circle leaked something?
You tried not to let the bewilderment you felt show on your face.
âIâm sorry? Are you trying to pass this off as real? Itâs obviously photoshopped! Iâm so tired of people trying to fabricate a story of me dating every person Iâve interacted with!â You finally snapped, letting a few years of pent up tension out in this moment. The reporter only continued to smirk.
âOh really!â They said and you wanted to punch them and their snooty little face. To try and display this, your face fell into one of contempt.
âIs that why this image was posted to Doh Kyungsooâs official instagram account with the caption âSorry for making you lie to the press for eight years!â?âÂ
They got you there, dam.
Your jaw dropped open, the corners of your mouth rising at the pure hilarity of this situation.
âExcuse me?â You asked, grabbing the phone off the reporter and tapping back onto the post. They were right, Kyungsoo had posted to his official instagram that exact post. It was a carousel post with pictures taken of when youâd lied to the press about him, from the initial lying about being in Seoul to a picture of your ringed necklace to a picture of you smirking after being asked which EXO member was your favourite.
You couldnât help but release a laugh, your hand traveling to cover your open mouth. Why did he post this?Â
Wait.
This meant you won the bet. Your head shot up to stare at a camera.
âI won the bet.â You said quietly. The reporter snatched their phone back and stared at you confused.Â
âWhat?â They asked and you whipped your head to them, a large smile spreading across your face.
âI won the bet!â You said eagerly, reaching out to grab their shoulders and rock them back and forth.
âI won the bet!!â You ignored how they shook you off, turning to your PR Agent instead and grabbing them and lifting them up. They hurriedly tapped your back as you lifted them, as though signaling you to drop them, but you ignored that and started spinning them around.Â
âI actually canât believe it, oh my god!â You snapped out of it and dropped your PR Agent, immediately running out of the media pen and back to your driver room, pulling your necklace out of your racesuit and pulling your rings off, placing them back on their correct fingers.
You quickly packed everything up, ignoring the ringing of your phone as your team tried to get you to go to more press conferences and briefings, and you got out of there, on the first plane to Seoul you could book.
When you arrived, after a long plane trip filled with excitement and pictures being taken of you, decked out in your team's merchandise as you sat buzzing in your seat, your phone was completely blowing up, messages from everyone in your contact list and more. You turned it off (youâd deal with it later) after calling an uber to your apartment.
You were jittery the whole ride, hoping that, despite the time of night, Kyungsoo was still awake. When you arrived outside your apartment building, you felt all the tension in your body ease, and you looked up to see the light on in your window. You smiled and took your suitcase handle in hand and ventured into the building, greeting the old lady at the desk.
Riding the lift up to your apartment nearly had you pacing and you almost ran down the hallway towards your door, quickly knocking. You felt the reverberations in the floorboards as Kyungsoo walked over to the door and a sense of euphoria filled you at the familiarity.
The door was barely open before you launched yourself at Kyungsoo, his heavenly laughter filled your ears as he caught you. You quickly found yourself in a kiss before pulling back and peppering kisses all over his face, finding his giggles more lovely than his singing.
You both pulled back just to look in eachothers eyes and you smiled simultaneously.Â
âI love you.â You muttered, the happiness from the day finally catching up to you.
âI love you too.â He whispered, tilting his head before going in for another kiss.Â
âYou know.â He began later that night, when you were just lying in bed cuddling together. You turned your head from its position on his chest to look at him, his eyes remaining on the roof.
âI think I won in the end.â You immediately reared your head back, prepared to object at the sheer wrongness of his answer. He anticipated this though and dropped his hand from where it was combing through your hair to your mouth. He also dropped his head as to make eye contact.
âYou stuck by me through everything. Even though you had to lie almost every day and had to listen to millions of rumours about me with other people, you still stayed with me. You learned a whole other language just to know people who knew me. Nothing I will ever say will ever put into perspective how much I appreciate what youâve done for me. The way youâve loved me will be comparable to nothing other than how much Iâve loved you.â His heartfelt speech made your head vibrate and a few tears left your eyes at his words, him kissing each one away.Â
You whined deep in the back of your throat and he released a laugh at your response.Â
âYou couldâve just said âI love youâ.â You said quietly.
âThatâs true too.â He said, pressing a kiss to your forehead.
ahh it's over!
dividers from this post btw, it's 11:59 pm let me sleep.
The day you realised that it was always you initiating physical affection in your relationship was strange to say the least. You had been so happy with Kyungsoo until this revelation shattered the rose-tinted glasses, and doubt clouded your mind.
You made a conscious effort going forward to be less clingy with him and see if it was all in your head. Unfortunately, Kyungsoo didn't pick up the slack and there was just less skin-ship between you. Nothing else had really changed though, leaving you questioning both your logic and your relationship.
Kyungsoo was still inviting you out and planning dates, such as tonight when you found yourself over at his for dinner. When you first arrived, he had placed a gentle kiss on your cheek as you entered. This small gesture helped to calm your anxieties as your mind wondered through all the worse case scenarios.
The two of you began to talk as you followed him to the kitchen where he was finishing preparation for the meal. You exchanged stories of your days so far as usual until your boyfriends mood changed.
"I wasn't going to say anything until after we ate, but I think I need to now," Kyungsoo said, suddenly.
Immediately, the anxiety that had ebbed away returned.
"Are you still happy with me?" he asked.
"What?" you replied, a little incredulous at his question.
"You've changed, you've been really distant lately and I need to know if you still want to be with me," he explained.
For a moment, you froze, wanting nothing more in that moment than to hug him. "Of course I still want to be with you," you told him. "I just thought I was being too clingy and wanted to give you some space."
"Why do think that? Did I make you think that?"
"No," you answered, quickly. "Not exactly, I just- you don't really hug, and I was doing it a lot and I just thought, maybe... I was annoying you."
"You could never annoy me. I know that you just show your affection for me physically. I show mine by buying you things or cooking for you." He gestured at the food currently sat on the hob.
You nodded, knowing that Kyungsoo hadn't once made you actually feel unloved, despite the lack of skin-ship.
"We just have different love languages," he continued. "I know that can be hard sometimes, but we can make it work."
"Yeah," you agreed. "I'm sorry, I should have just spoken to you. You always make me feel loved, even if it isn't with hugs and kisses all the time."
"Good," Kyungsoo said with a little nod and a smile. "Now, come here, you need to make up for all those hugs I didn't get."
You happily shuffled towards him, securing your arms around his waist. "Don't let the dinner burn though," you muttered.
"I won't," he chuckled. There was a pause before he continued, "I'll make more of an effort with physical affection it if will help reassure you."
"You really don't have to."
"But I want to," he pulled out of the embrace and placed a quick kiss to your lips. "I love you, and sometimes that means compromising on things like love languages so that everyone feels happy and loved."
"I love you, too," you smiled at him, resting your hands on his shoulders.
"But now I really should check on dinner."
You laughed, and moved so that Kyungsoo could get back to the hob. All of a sudden you couldn't remember why you had gotten yourself into such a state before. Watching the man you loved carefully preparing food for you, you knew there would be no problem too big with him by your side.
Twenty-one had always represented more than just a number to y/n.
She could finally obtain her freedom to go out of the Palace with only one guard, have her friends over more often, begin her self-defense classes, and learn more about the women she admired the most. Of course, y/n had always had history lessons for it was of utmost importance for a royal like her to be knowledgeable of her roots and ancestry. However, there was one particular Queen whom she had the most curiosity about. No teacher had dared to tell the story of Jeon Mindae, a royal who had vanished after eleven years of rule, and no one ever talked about what had happened to her.
As much as she was joyous about all those new possibilities, y/n was also terrified. Turning twenty-one had also meant that she was of age to finally get married, and the King was well aware of that. Her sister, barely a year older than her, had been married two months after her twenty-first birthday. Consequently, y/n was not expecting any other future for herself.
A week after her celebration, y/n found herself looking out of the window of her chambers, wondering how life went about for people whom she probably would never see ever again. She liked to contemplate all those various faces and create whole identities and characters, imagining stories, often romantic, for each person that called her attention.
Y/n envied them sometimes. Their lives could be different, more challenging, and less privileged, but at least they had certain freedoms to enjoy, even if they did not realize it. They could go out and about whenever, wherever, and with whoever they liked, they could lead an independent life, and above all, they could marry the person they loved. Those aspects of life were what y/n yearned the most, and ironically, was deprived of them. Her only alternative was her newly gained escapades. And she desperately needed to go out.Â
Even though she had been able to leave the Palace for a couple of hours already, the guard who accompanied her was pretty annoying and watched her every step. He made sure people knew who she was and made her feel out of place, which was the opposite of what she had wanted. So, this time, she had asked the King to send another guard with her.
âSir Sehun must accompany me this time, Your Highnessâ
âWhy is that so, Princess?â
âI do not intend for people to recognize me when I leave the Palace. Sir Taehun was not fit for that roleâ
âFor I trust Sir Sehun, I will assign him this duty. Await him by the gatesâ
âThank you, Your Highnessâ
The woman could not help but smirk as she made her way out of the Crown room. Sehun was a dear friend of hers and she knew he was both, laidback and protective. She was the safest and most confident under his care.Â
Y/n had to laugh when, after some minutes of impatient little walks around the gates, Sir Sehun approached her with his thick right eyebrow raised âMaâam, may I ask why I was requested as your guard?â
âWell, Sir Sehun,â she interlaced her left arm with the soldierâs right one as he was offering, and began their walk out of the Palace âTaehun is a prickâ she let out once they were out of sight, and a good distance from the nosy masses of the royal community.
âNothing new. You just want me to let you live, thenâ he dropped off the formalities, as they usually did when together and in private â or at least away from those who could not live a life as anything else than aristocrats.Â
âYou know me so wellâ
The walk to the Cherry Blossom Market was quiet but pleasant. They both liked the silence and tranquility that the forest offered, and it was well known between them that it had to be savored each time, as opportunities like those were usually scarce. Upon reaching the first stalls, y/n sent a smile in Sehunâs way. That was her call for him to just let her go around but always under his careful watch, as she had promised.Â
The beauty that y/n found there, she was sure could not be found anywhere else. Just the sight of people all dressed up in colorful yet comfortable ropes, some simple, some fancy, brought a new wave of giddiness to her body. The thought of being able to walk with them, passing as one more of the commoners, was what made her the most thrilled. She could pretend, just for a couple of hours, that she was one of the people she usually fantasized about through the glass of her window.Â
A pair of the prettiest shoes caught her attention, and she had to stop to just admire them. Soft peachy colored silk embraced the pair, both adorned with delicate pink cherry blossom petals on each side. Sadly, she could not have them. The guards would snap them away from her the minute she went inside for the check-up. Commoner things stay with commoners.Â
A light breeze took her out of her thoughts, and as she placed the shoes back where they belonged with a small bow to the stall owner, her eyes met a wooden bridge, which went over a quiet river. Cherry blossoms surrounded the area, their petals dancing their way to the ground, mimicking a snowy afternoon. After taking a look back to Sehun, who was well aware of her movements, she enthusiastically skipped to the beginning of the bridge, feeling the glee that the soft petals caressing her cheeks provided her with.     Â
The walk to the viaduct was calmer, yet never less eager. The middle of the bridge had a smaller number of people, so y/n decided that that was the right spot to rest a little and contemplate the delicateness of the running water, and how the pink petals bathed in it as if tired of hanging from a tree.
Although her hood was bothering her sightseeing, she knew people would recognize her out of paintings and written records, so she had the need to hide her face as much as she could. The risk was high enough with her hood up.Â
Noticing how someone stopped right beside her and leaned their forearms on the railing, she took her gaze away from the river and to her other side, pretending to observe the cherry blossoms dancing to the rhythm of the wind. When the woman was about to walk away, she heard the person speak.
âIs it not incredible that there are over a hundred varieties of cherry blossom trees?âÂ
The deepness and smoothness of the voice that she now knew belonged to a man, had her stood still in her place. A shiver ran down her spine and she felt how her cheeks imitated the color of the most intense pink petals.
âIt certainly is,â she replied, clearing her throat, still giving her back to the stranger. Though she was aware of the hazard that that man could represent, she physically could not move from her spot. It was as if the manâs voice had put a spell on her.Â
âAre these your favorite?â he asked, and y/n could not help but crack a smile.Â
âFortunately, they areâÂ
Her body was moving without her taking notice, and suddenly she was no longer facing the trees but the very man who had interrupted her alone time, away from royalties, away from turmoil. And the sight in front of y/n had her sigh.Â
A round face, giving him a youthful and friendly appearance, was complemented by brown almond-shaped eyes, which seemed captivating, warm, and inviting. His well-defined, thick eyebrows framed his eyes and added character to his face. The man sported a small, button-like nose that went well with his soft jawline. Though she tried to avoid looking at his lips, it had become an impossible task. Plump, well-defined, heart-shaped. Flawless. She last noticed that his dark brown hair was up in a topknot, all secured by a simple linen headband.
âHave you ever seen the Shirotae variety?â when his eyes met hers, y/n felt what she could only associate with what her romantic novels described as love at first sight. If it existed or not, she couldn't care less. For her, a man like him talking about her favorite tree and flower, looking at her in what seemed to be undivided attention and care, had to be hard to find â and that had her over the moon in just a couple of seconds.
âI have never left the Kingdomâ she admitted, finally able to unglue her eyes from his. Overly conscious, she looked down at her feet, hiding her face as much as possible with the gray hood.
âHwanggeum is known for having them all, though it is true that the Shirotaes are well beyond our borders. Are you from here, Agassi?â
It was the first time that someone had addressed her as a commoner, and rather than displeasing her, it encouraged her to keep talking to the man. He had not recognized her after all.
âI am, Seonsaengnimâ
âSo you are well acquainted with the Pink Shellâ his faint smile had her melting right on the spot, but she somehow managed to conceal it.Â
âIt might also be the reason why they are my favorite. Though I have read about the other varieties, I have not had the chance to see them in person yetâ
âWould you like to?â
If it meant that he could take her away and hold her hand for the rest of the afternoon, she would have yelled âPlease!â. However, the sight of Sehun waiting for her by the end of the bridge, right behind the enticing man, had her come to her senses âI am afraid my father is not very keen on me going out often, especially out of the cityâ
âThat was not my question, Agassi. Would you like to?â
âI would love to,â she nodded, and with all her might, bowed to say goodbye âIt was pleasant to converse with you, Seonsaengnim. Have a good rest of your afternoonâ
Walking past him, she tried to reach her guard friend as fast as possible. Her efforts, no matter how big, were cut short by a hand around her unclothed wrist. The warmth he transmitted was able to soothe her uncontrollable heart, just a little bit, for his hand over her skin, was not something her heart was expecting to feel.
âI still do not know your nameâ he recited, not letting go. âI am Kyungsoo. Do Kyungsooâ
âPardon me Seonsaengnim, but I am not allowed to disclose my nameâÂ
As if he sensed that that was all he was getting from her, the man she now knew to be named Do Kyungsoo let her hand go, and she was finally able to walk towards her guard. âLetâs goâ she murmured over her breath, not stopping on her way back home. Sehun rapidly followed, not wanting to discuss what he had witnessed.Â
Do Kyungsoo stayed on her mind for the following two days, as if he had nowhere else to be. It was surprising how she could not just shoo him away. No matter how many classes she took, how many conversations she had or the piles of books she read, the man with warm eyes and plump lips would always come back. She was aware of the fact that the King would announce her inescapable marriage in the upcoming weeks, hopefully, months, and having met him, she did not want that day to come any time soon.
Three days had passed, and y/n could no longer bear it. She had to see Kyungsoo again, at least one last time.
âIndeed, Sir Sehun is available for you. Where are you heading to?â the King asked, and y/n raised her head.
âTo the Cherry Blossom Market, Your Highnessâ
âAgain?â With his eyebrows raised, he observed her every movement.
âI am truly in love with the cherry blossom trees, and these are the last days of their bloom. I yearn to admire them as long as I canâ
A nod was the only permission she needed to perform a deep bow and leave the Crown room, looking for Sehun with her eyes. She spotted the guard standing next to the roomâs entrance, already informed of his next duties. There was no need to say anything.
With her cloak on and hood already up, silence remained untouchable until they surpassed the main gates of the Palace. The discretion she continuously made sure to have had become sacred at that point. No one except Sehun could know about Do Kyungsoo.Â
âAre you sure he is going to be there?â
âI am not, but this is the only way I can find outâ she sighed, letting him walk by her side.Â
âWhy do you want to see him again?â he asked.
âHonestly, Sehun, I do not know,â the woman admitted âHe has not left my mind ever since we met. The only certainty I have is that my heart is longing for him.â
âDo you like him?â
âIt is hard to say. I have never felt this way, so I cannot compare it to anything other than what I read romantic in my novelsâ
âNot a great source, may I sayâ Sehun giggled, looking at her with small eyes.Â
âI am sorry, Sir all-the-girls-love-meâ her laugh synced with his, heading the conversation in a more relaxed direction.Â
âNot only girls love me!â
Though tranquility had embraced her as they walked their way through the forest, the sight of the first market stalls made her heart race once again. He could be anywhere, but he was surely closer than before.Â
When she felt Sehun squeeze her shoulder, she looked his way to find a comforting smile. She nodded. Words were not necessary between them.
Calculated but unconscious steps led her to the bridge where their heartwarming exchange had taken place. The trees were still there, now calmer than before. Petals were still falling, but their dance was more controlled and stable. The bridge itself had fewer people, and she thought that the stillness of the water could not be attractive enough for the masses. It was for her.
A deep breath was all she had to do to muster the courage and find the place where Kyungsoo had approached her. All she had to do was wait. But oh my! It was a true challenge. As she hummed a song that her sister had sung to her while she was little, y/n closed her eyes and let her mind wander around dangerous paths. His cute smile had popped up once again, and it was impossible for her not to smile back. The effect he had had on her in only a matter of minutes was incomprehensible.Â
âIs it me that you are waiting for, Agassi?â
The feeling that her heart was about to jump out of her chest came back upon hearing his honeyed voice once again. Nothing could have prepared y/n for that moment, regardless of how many times she had imagined it.
âYes,â she whispered, turning to him with rosy cheeks. Because she had expected to see his gentle smile, the seriousness of his expression took her aback âOh⊠Is there something wrong, Seongsaengnim?â
âI now know why you did not want me to know your name, Your Graceâ
Her surprise could not be veiled. How had that happened? Was she not careful enough? She would not have come back if she noticed any trace of recognition in his eyes. She could not risk her outings like that.Â
âYou are mistaking me for someone elseâ Her voice faltered, but her forehead was still up.
âI am not. You are Princess Y/n, daughter of King Younghee and sister of the future Queen, Princess Hara. I apologize for the boldness with which I addressed you the other day, Your Grace. It was only after our encounter that I realized who you wereâ
So that settled it. Her outings were over, her freedom was over. Seeing him was also over. She understood that good things only lasted for a short period, but she did not see the end coming so fast.Â
âWhy are you here?â y/n had to know at least that. Was he back to solely ask for forgiveness?
âI had wanted to see you again, Your Grace. I came back here the day following our meeting, but you were not here. That same evening, I traveled to the Grand Market to buy more merchandise to sell at the Market, and I saw the big portrait of your family at the entrance. How could I not know who you were?â the calmness with which he uttered his sentences had y/n in a trance. His eyes had not left hers, as if he had rehearsed for that exact instant together. âAfter learning about your true identity, I knew I had to stop myself from expecting this encounter to happen againâ
âBut it happenedâ she murmured, feeling her chest expanding with a deep breath.Â
âI genuinely tried, Your Graceâ he shook his head, still not moving an inch from his spot âBut it proved to be impossible.â
The silence that followed his statements permitted the woman to process her sentiments, one by one. There was nervousness. Uncertainty. Fear. But there was also expectancy. Excitement. Bliss.Â
âWe are not supposed to do thisâ he continued âA commoner can only dream of meeting a royal and give her the life she deserves. I know I am not able to do so. However, I am here. And you are here too, Your Graceâ
âI needed to see you again,â she admitted, taking her hood away from her view. She had to see him in all his plenitude because it had to be the last time âonly one more time. My mind was playing tricks and my duties could not be fulfilled if I had you in my head every hourâ.
âI understand,â Kyungsoo nodded, and for the first time that afternoon, his fingers touched hers. Her lifetime seemed to pass right in front of her eyes as the caress of his warm skin against hers filled her senses. It was overwhelming, yet y/n wanted more. âI want you to have this. We cannot interact in person anymore, but I consider letters to be a very effective way to communicate. If that is what you want, Your Graceâ
The eager nod she gave him made Kyungsoo show the first smile of the afternoon. His relief could be sensed, and that also gave her the reaffirmation she had been desperate for. With a discrete hand movement, she took the folded piece of paper, keeping it inside her cloakâs pocket.Â
âI also know you will get married in the near futureâ his forehead furrowed, and y/n felt how her eyes welled up. That was a topic she was not ready to face, especially with him âAlthough that makes it even more dangerous and unfeasible, I am still willing to do this. Are you, Your Grace?â
Not following her heart was not an option. She would allow herself to be selfish this time.
I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits. I write to you with the utmost humility and respect, fully aware of the immeasurable distance that separates your world from mine.
Since the moment I first had the privilege of glimpsing your radiant presence from afar, my heart has embarked on a journey it had never before known. It is a journey filled with profound admiration, deep respect, and, dare I say, love that transcends all boundaries.
I am but a humble commoner, a mere speck in the grand tapestry of your Fatherâs noble kingdom. Yet, as I go about my daily toils, I find myself endlessly enchanted by thoughts of you. Your delicateness, your kindness, your voiceâall of these qualities have illuminated my every waking moment from the second you answered my inquiry.
Please understand that I harbor no illusions of grandeur, nor do I seek to intrude on your world. My affection is a silent and solitary affair, a secret held close to my heart, and now to yours. It is a love that has to remain unspoken, for I am painfully aware that my place in society precludes any dreams of an impossible union.
I am content to serve my kingdom, my family, and my fellow commoners with all the devotion and diligence I can muster. In doing so, I hope to honor the same virtues that have earned you the admiration and adoration of all who have had the privilege of knowing you.
May your days be filled with happiness and prosperity.
With the utmost reverence and eternal devotion,
DKS.
His neat calligraphy imprinted in liquid ink had perfectly accompanied what he had expressed in that letter. Kyungsooâs well-thought-out words had her heart leap in excitement and yearning. The man had probably spent an afternoon ardently writing, employing careful words and admiring sentences.Â
In return, she had to let him know what he had done to her as well. The impossibility of their reunion could not make their days heavy with misery. Â
My Dear Kyungsoo,
I wish nothing but good health and spirits for you in return. Your words have touched my heart, and I am deeply moved by the sincerity and humility with which you express your feelings.
Your admiration and respect have not gone unnoticed. I am grateful for your kind words and the sentiments you have shared with me. It is rare to encounter such genuine devotion and honor in this world, and your letter has brought warmth to my heart.
I must confess that your unwavering dedication to our kingdom and your fellow commoners resonates deeply with me. Your commitment to serving our people is a testament to the qualities that make our realm strong and resilient.
It is with a heavy heart that I must acknowledge the realities of our respective stations in life. The traditions and responsibilities that come with my position demand a life of duty and sacrifice, which I am still unable to come to terms with. Your affection is a gift I shall cherish in my heart, but I also have to understand the limitations that bind us.
I encourage you to continue your path with the same steadfast determination and honor that you have shown thus far. Your devotion to our kingdom is a treasure, and I have no doubt that your contributions will be felt and appreciated by many.
Please know that I hold your words and your spirit in high regard.Â
Weeks had passed, and letters had come and gone. What had first started as a timid and knowingly-impossible romance, was now a tragedy that only found its way to the surface through words of passion, endeavor, and selflessness.Â
The only one who knew about their exchange was Sehun. Since he was made responsible for her outings, no matter where they were, he had soon suggested delivering the letters back and forth, as he had understood how hazardous their short encounters could be. Seeing each other from afar from time to time was not enough, but was the only thing they could do for their growing affection.Â
When she did not go with Sehun, their letter exchange was not done over the bridge. The men had made up a system unknown to y/n, but extremely effective in turn. Despite knowing how she was putting herself at risk each time she hid her letter in Sehunâs sleeve, she trusted her guard. Because receiving Kyungsooâs letter was the only time of the week she felt purposefully happy, she neither wanted to nor would stop.
But alas, as she had learned, everything came to an end. However, that was not the way she had wanted it to happen.Â
âKyungsoo was not there this morningâ Sehunâs forehead creased, worrisome written all over his face.
âWhat?â she had to stop herself from actually yelling, and shielded her mouth with one of her hands âNot any trace?â
âNoneâ
âHe has never done thisâ
A knock on her chamberâs door startled both of them, and Sehun had to take a step back to allow her to reach the hatch next to him. She looked at him, puzzled, and with a deep breath opened the door.Â
âYour Grace, Your Highness is requesting your presence in the Crown roomâ
âIs it urgent?â
âIt is, Your Graceâ
Thanking the maid, y/n closed the door behind her and hugged Sehun âI have a bad feeling about thisâ
Call it third eye, intuition, or merely understanding. The woman had not failed to see what was coming.Â
âYou are to get married next week, y/n. Everything has been settled, and I am glad to announce that your future husband is the best prospect I could find for you. You will meet him in three days when he comes to formally propose to you.â
When she squeezed her eyes shut, the tears that had shimmered them traveled down her pale cheeks. Y/n could only see Kyungsoo reciting his letters to her in his mellowed voice, promising her to find a way to be together, not caring about social boundaries anymore. She only wanted to hear his whispers, to feel his tender touch, and to experience what would be like to have his inviting lips caress her own.
But now, the King was taking that away from her. The possibility they had built through their letters had to remain impossible.Â
âWhy are you doing this to me, Dad?â
It was the first time in years that y/n had called the King dad. She had felt that he no longer deserved that title, no matter how painful it was to lack that figure in her life. After her motherâs passing, he changed. His anguish for his loss had duplicated hers and Haraâs. He had forgotten that he had two daughters who had lost a mother and had only started to care for his heartbreak.Â
âYou are more naive than I wished you were.â he declared, unmoved by her emotions âI could have waited some weeks, some months even. But your recent behavior was proof enough that you need someone to discipline youâ
âWhat are you talking about?â a mess already, y/n felt how her future with Kyungsoo vanished little by little. The love they had both developed over months through words and glances from afar was coming to an end, and there was nothing she could do to prevent it from happening. Â
âTwenty-one is the prime of your life, and albeit you are not becoming Queen, you have duties to fulfill. Disregarding that, you have been frequently meeting a commoner, y/n. Please, do not tell me that that is not accurate, because I have eyes all over my kingdom. The greatest way to get you back on track is to give your hand in marriage to someone who is well-versed in our world, and knows how to treat youâ
âAs a trophy? As garbage? As a scum?âÂ
âHas your sister protested like you are? How do you know you will be treated badly if you have not crossed glances with him?â his harsh tone would not scare her away.
âI do not have to do that to understand that he will make my life miserable. The one person who is able to make me happy is not himâ Rage was getting into her quite rapidly. She had to fight for what she wanted. But how?
âThe one person you are so sure about making you happy is no longer available. I am sorry, daughter, but this is your life.â
âWhat have you done to him?!âÂ
âReturn to your chambers, y/n. That was all I had to sayâ
âDad?! What have you done to him?!âÂ
The sorrow was unmeasurable. She had put Kyungsoo at risk, she had made him suffer the consequences of loving her. She had selfishly walked him to a dark place, which she did not even know what it looked like. Where was he? Was he even alive?Â
The pressure that was building in her chest was somewhat relieved when Sehun went inside her room, with no knocking in between. He was the only one she had allowed to do that in case of an emergency. And God knows she was in need of what Sehun could provide to her, be it a hug or simple reassurance words. But luck was on her side â if one could say that after what she was about to go through â and he was there with more than just that.
âI know what happenedâ Taking her hands into his, he began to share the information he was able to gather âTaehun has been following us, and he was the one who told your father about Kyungsooâ
âThat bastard!â y/nâs eyes flooded with tears as she squeezed Sehunâs hands harder.
âI have never liked him, but that just crossed the lineâ he admitted âThe King sent his soldiers to capture Kyungsoo, and now they got him in the dungeonsâ
âOh my Goodnessâ the fear multiplied, and the sudden relief she had felt upon seeing her best friend disappeared to make room for that familiar pressure, this time coming back twice as bad.
âI have a planâ he nodded, placing his big hands on her shoulders âJaemin is watching over him during the night shift⊠and he owes meâ
Y/n could do nothing else than cry on his shoulder and thank him over and over again. She truly did not know what she would do without her loyal guard, without her Sehun.
â
With her fingers tightly gripping her dress sleeves, the princess followed the guard down the spooky stairs of the dungeons. Though not too far away from the Palace, they had to ride a horse to make it quicker â and she was not a fan of horses. However, this time, she did not really care. Kyungsoo was her only priority.Â
âWhy is this so smelly?â she whispered, coughing when the damp odor reached her nostrils.
âDo you think they would bother to clean this?âÂ
âToo busy standing next to the King, I guess.â
Just when the flight of stairs started to appear endless, y/n saw light coming from one of the corners, and she could finally breathe âHeâs here, right?â
But the woman did not have to wait for Sehunâs response, because he was right there. Sitting with his back resting on one of the rusty cell bars, Kyungsoo looked drained. His face was pale and smeared with dirt and sweat. His clothes were ragged and mucky. Because his eyes were closed, she could only guess â and hope â that he was sleeping.Â
âStay back. Iâll talk to Jaemin firstâ
As Sehun walked towards the light, she could sense how the movement around him was slowly waking him up from his slumber. His eyes had lightened up when he recognized her best friend and a sense of easiness travelled down through y/nâs spine.Â
âCome, y/nâ
If Kyungsooâs eyes had lightened up when he saw Sehun, the instant his gaze met hers he appeared to hold the stars and the moon altogether in his orbs. âYou are hereâ
No time was wasted when the master key let him out of the cell. They embraced each other for the first time, and the relief that they both felt upon finally having their love in their arms was indescribable. Letters were incredible, but they lacked contact, they lacked tangible affection.
âI am so sorryâ she cried, taking in the feeling of his arms around her waist, and how his left hand caressed the back of her head with soft strokes.
âNone of this is your fault, my loveâ he whispered, and being able to hear his sweet voice calling her that endearment sent her heart jumping out of her ribcage âWe were aware of the risks. And I am still delighted with the decision we madeâ
âHow?âÂ
âBecause I get to have you in my arms nowâ he let her go, only to place his hands on her cheeks, looking into her eyes as if they held the universe. âWe will be fineâ
âWhy are you so confident about that?â y/n could not help but be hesitant about everything around her now. She had only questions in her mind, no clear answers in sight.Â
âBecauseâ he brushed her lower lip with his thumb, his eyes traveling down with it, and back to her orbs âwhat we have is not easily broken. They can try, but we fight back. And if it is not now, it will be then. We will be together, my love. Trust meâ
And with that promise, Kyungsoo pressed his lips onto hers and sealed the deal. The initial surprise had her frozen, trying to figure out what was actually happening. But when everything was clear, y/n closed her eyes and let him in. His passionate way of kissing her was more telling of his love for her than any of his letters were, and that was a lot to say. He was an excellent writer. But when it came to kissingâŠ
Their romantic moment was cut short when Sehun fake coughed in an attempt to get their attention. When their lips were mere centimeters away from each other, he was quick to intervene âI am really sorry to interrupt your⊠moment, but she cannot stay much longerâ
âWhat do you mean stay?â the woman looked at her best friend, baffled by his statement âIs he not coming with us?â
It may have been a dumb question, but she did not see how they could not just let him go, at least to hide somewhere far away.
âThat would be an overly bad ideaâ Kyungsoo uttered, interlacing his fingers with hers âThat would get everyone killed. Me, Sehun, the other guard. We cannot risk itâ he shook his head, and rapidly let her hands go to brush the tears running down her cheeks âWe will find another way, my loveâ
âButâŠâ she sobbed, suddenly feeling like a little kid in his arms âI do not want you to die, my darlingâÂ
âI am not dying anytime soon. I have to become your prince firstâ he giggled, and that sent the butterflies in her stomach on a wild flight.
âGuysâŠâ
âSorry,â Kyungsoo apologized and pressed a kiss on her forehead âGo back to your chambers and wait for Sehun to tell you what to do next. Whether the plan takes a week, two months, or three years⊠we cannot know for sure. The only thing I know for a fact is that we are meeting again, and we will have our happily ever after. I promise you, my loveâ
y/n would recite those exact words for the following two years, be it aloud or in her mind. Kyungsooâs vow was not to leave her soul anytime soon, and she decided to use it as a way to have him close to her heart every day.Â
She had had to get married. She had had to share a room with someone she did not love. She had played the trophy wife role for too long for her liking. But Sehun had continuously reassured her that the plan was going smoothly, and if everything happened according to it, she would meet Kyungsoo in a short time.
âHajoon wants me to become pregnantâ she confessed, a halo of panic in her eyes âI cannot deal with this anymoreâ Her cheeks, very familiar with her tears by that point, wetted the beginning of her bluey sweetheart bodice.
âWhen are you heading to the tour around Hwanggeum?â
âIn three daysâ
âHold on for a week. We are getting thereâ
Do you know that feeling of time slowing down when what you only need is the wait to be over? That was what y/n was experiencing ever since she left Kyungsoo in that horrid dungeon, hoping that seeing him again would be a matter of days. Her heart was hopeful, but her mind was not so much so. She knew that rushing into what your feelings dictate never brings good results, but the urgency had become tangible as the months went by.Â
He was in the back of her mind most of her days, but very much present when her husband pressed kisses on her forehead, and occasionally on her lips. Despite not liking him much, she had to admit that Hajoon was clearly not the worst. He had respected her boundaries and only touched her when she let him. She was suspiciously sure that he had a lover way before they had gotten married, and that was a strange relief for the woman. HoweverâŠ
âI truly wish things were different, y/n⊠but we have to produce an heir soonâ
âIt sounded like you really want thatâ she sarcastically replied.
âYour FatherâŠâ
âOf courseâ she nodded, putting her hairbrush away to look at him âI will tell him we are trying. A child is not part of my plans right nowâ
The only person in her plans was Kyungsoo, and the wait was becoming heavier on her. In order to relieve stress, she took the first book she could get from the history section of the library and headed out to the gardens. It was nice to just feel the breeze clash with her rosy cheeks, and just let it calm her nerves down. The copy she had blindly chosen was one she had never seen in the years and years she frequented the library, and that encouraged her to go through the yellowed pages before choosing a story. Y/n had to stop on page one hundred and thirty-six, one with its edge slightly folded. There, a sketched portrait of an elegant woman caught her attention. Her stern look was emphasized by a set of well-defined curls that framed her clear face, big eyes, and slim nose. Her lips were pressed in a soft line as if they had been like that for a long time.
Jeon Mindae.
The one and only secret that the royals were good at hiding, but could only conceal for so long. She had noticed how even after turning twenty-one, no one was mentioning her, not even to highlight the great advances that had happened during her short reign. But now, she was about to discover the truth.
In the annals of Hwanggeum's rich history, there exists a chapter of intrigue, love, and profound change that transcends the centuries. This is the tale of Queen Jeon Mindae, whose reign is forever etched in the hearts and minds of the people, for it was marked by an extraordinary love affair and a subsequent transformation of the kingdom's destiny.
Queen Mindae, known for her benevolence and wisdom, ascended to the throne during a time of prosperity and unity. Her rule was celebrated for the well-being and happiness it brought to her subjects. Nevertheless, behind the façade of a perfect queen lay a hidden love that would change the course of Hwanggeum's history.
Unbeknownst to her court and subjects, Queen Mindae had fallen deeply in love with Kim Beomseok, a commoner she had encountered during a secret exploration of her kingdom disguised as a humble citizen. Their love, while genuine, was forbidden, as royal protocol dictated that a queen must wed a nobleman from a neighboring kingdom.
For years, Queen Mindae and Beomseok carried on their love affair in the shadows, yearning to be together openly. The burden of the crown and the expectations of the kingdom stood as barriers between them.
The climax of this tale came during a grand ball in the palace, held to celebrate Hwanggeum's prosperity. On this fateful night, Queen Mindae mysteriously vanished, plunging the kingdom into a state of chaos and confusion. Wild rumors swirled about her fate, from kidnapping to assassination, as the people sought answers.
The official proclamation, issued by the royal council, declared that Queen Mindae had forsaken her throne to elope with Beomseok, her commoner lover, relinquishing her responsibilities. Her disappearance was thus presented as a voluntary act. Hwanggeum was left in the hands of Princess Miyoung, a distant cousin, who was chosen to rule in Mindae's absence.
Yet, the official narrative failed to quell the suspicions and doubts of the kingdom's citizens. In secret gatherings and hushed conversations, the people of Hwanggeum rejected the notion that their beloved queen would willingly abandon them.
The queen's true location was never found, and a network of loyalists worked tirelessly to erase Queen Mindae of Hwanggeumâs history. However, the people of Hwanggeum yearned for her return, not to rule, but to be a symbol of love and unity.Â
To this day, the last of us are patiently waiting to get a glimpse of her once again, to see her next to her beloved Beomseok, and to thank her for her transparent and wealthy rule. Queens like her are not made any longer.Â
She had to be more sensitive than usual because as she read each word, the tears were uncontrollably running down her face. It was like seeing herself in the mirror, but only seeing one difference: she had been unable to run away with her true love.Â
How had been Jeon Mindaeâs life after vanishing? Had she been happy?
She truly hoped she was. She knew the feeling of loving someone who you are not supposed to and fighting for it to be alive even after years of waiting. It was exhausting, yet worth it, if by the end of the line she got to see him again.
Y/n kept the book pressed against her chest to the third destination of their tour, as a way to keep Jeon Mindaeâs story close to her heart. If what Sehun had promised a week before was true, she was about to see Do Kyungsoo after two desperate years of sharing a bed with a stranger, pretending not to die a little with each passing day. That was not the life she had wanted for herself, but what could she do?Â
Just wait, said her best friend every day. So she did just that.
But now, seeing the premises of Gyulcheon, it was like the sun was finally shining for her. Its citizens were slowly gathering around their carriage, waving at her and Hajoon, who had sported the same fake smile for the last five days.Â
The city center was prepared to receive them, and the line of people who had gifts for them kept on growing as they got closer to the Palaceâs entrance.
Her husband leaving the carriage first, y/n waited for Sehun to open the door for her once it was safe to do so. High-end families and generals bowed at her as she walked all the way to the Palaceâs porch, and she could only smile at them with faked enthusiasm. Hajoon, awaiting her at the first step of the staircase, took her by her elbow and led her to the seatings decorated with golden and ancient figures. For the next two hours, they met Gyulcheonâs citizens who had to welcome them with gifts and offerings, a long-held tradition which the princess found pointless. Why would rich people need presents from poor, unprivileged ones? How was that even fair?
âI have to apologize My Prince, but I was only able to afford an honorable gift for My Princessâ
The voice she had longed to hear for so many days, months, and years, reached her ears in an unexpected place. Her gaze pinned to her lap slowly raised to meet the eyes she had yearned to see, and the knot she had had in her throat ever since that night in the dungeons, tightened. He was as beautiful as she remembered, like time had stopped as soon as they met. Fighting back the urge to throw her arms around him, she bowed at him with her head and took a deep breath.
âYou do not have to worry. I am content if my wife is.â and with that, Hajoon turned to the next peasant, who was offering him a wrapped-up gift.
âThank you, Seongsaengnimâ In a murmur, she took the laced box from his hands, trying to at least brush his fingers with hers. The shiver that she felt traveling down her spine was a sign of how strong her love for him was, even after all those years.
âPlease try them as soon as you can, Your Grace. I would be devastated if they did not fit youâ
His low buzz had her dancing in a cloud of her own. However, the guard that was next to him made it clear that he had to move quickly. More people were waiting behind.Â
âI will, Seongsaengnim. I thank you again. It was nice to meet youâ Pressing the box to her chest, she bowed at him once more, Kyungsoo copying her with an even deeper one. When they slowly rose, it was as if they had already blended their thoughts. âI love youâ was whispered from both ends and a soft smile graced their faces when the man departed.Â
Later that day, and alone in the chambers she was offered for her stay, she quickly headed to the corner where all their offerings had been placed. Hajoon was in a meeting, so she had time to find the only one that mattered. The laced box was hidden under the hundred packed gifts, so she had to make a big effort to retrieve it once it was on her radar. Once in her hands, waiting was no longer an option. Not even taking her time to appreciate the decorations around it, she removed the cover and tore through the white tissue paper wrap. What she found took her back to that afternoon, the afternoon that had changed her life.
The pair of shoes she had caught sight of that day were in her hands. She would never forget that soft peach silk that embraced the pair, and how those pink cherry blossom petals adorned them so delicately. With a cheeky sigh, y/n concluded that he had seen her from the moment she had set foot in the Cherry Blossom Market, when she had run to the stall, too entranced by the shoes to even care who noticed her.Â
His words from the morning popped up in her mind as she ran her fingers around the shoes, and she rapidly put them on the floor to try them on. She knew he had meant something with it â the plan had to be resumed. As soon as she put them on, a relieved giggle left her lips. They were about to be together, once and for all.Â
She nodded to her husband and took Sehunâs hand to step into the carriage. Once inside, her best friend winked at her, and she had to suppress the smirk she wanted to give him in return. Nothing could make her happier than seeing him ride his horse by her window, Hajoon too preoccupied with his book to even spare her a glance.
Their long conversation was interrupted when the carriage made an unexpected stop, and her husband looked out of the window for the first time in hours âWhat is happening?â
As Sehun yelled âAmbush!â, everything seemed to occur in slow motion. Half a dozen men all covered in black from head to toe surrounded the wagon, one of them violently opening its entrance door as the rest engaged in physical fights with the horsed soldiers, less in number and not so much prepared to respond to such a sudden attack.
The man who opened their door was quick to take her by the arm and shove her out, not even caring to check if her clumsy fall had caused any harm to her body. Indeed it had, but she was too busy screaming for help to even notice that her wrist had twisted under her weight in her landing. âPlease!â she yelled as the stranger dragged her to his horse and effortlessly sat her on its saddle.Â
ây/n!â She heard Hajoonâs voice muffled by all the swording around them. When she looked behind her, the stranger had already taken his own weapon out of his scabbard, waiting for her husband to get closer. However, he was never capable of doing so â another one of the ambushers had his blade pressed to his throat.Â
âDo not move.â
âHajoon!â
Her cry was followed by her kidnapper gracefully jumping on his horse, slightly adjusting his position in front of her. Triggering movement with his heel, the brownish animal began his race right into the woods, the carriage quickly disappearing from sight.Â
It was only about half an hour into their ride that y/n let herself breathe in the fresh air. His addicting scent reached her nostrils in the process, and a chuckle escaped her lips as she strongly wrapped her arms around the man.Â
âI missed youâ she whispered to his ear, and he squeezed her hand in his.Â

Summary: Kyungsoo wakes up feeling lonely on his birthday, knowing you were not coming back on time, but well-intentioned friends whisk him away for a day full of surprises. Although the most important one was patiently waiting for him back home.
Word count: 3K+
A/N: I just had to add the angsty feelings, but I hope it stayed balanced. I had the idea after hearing Kyungsoo do the cover of Falling Like the Stars by James Arthur. Another happy late birthday, Kyungsoo!
MASTERLIST | MOODBOARD
The alarm went off, but while Kyungsoo would usually wake up right then and start off his day, this time he remained curled on his side, sighing as he burrowed deeper under the covers.
Gentle rays of sunlight touched his face, yet he kept his eyes closed as the alarm was still going off, wishing for a few more minutes of sleep. It wasnât exhaustion weighing on him, but an intrusive longing for your warm embrace and smiles that greeted him constantly.
Soo, Iâm so sorry. Iâm afraid I wonât even make it on time for your birthday.
Your words kept echoing in his head. Itâs not like heâs obsessed with birthday celebrations, but youâve been away for so long already that the holidays were too monotonous for him.
He actually hates being too clingyâhe really tries not to beâand he understands more than anyone how patient and considerate you have been before waiting for him when he is the one away. Kyungsoo groaned at his self-pity thoughts, grabbing his phone from the counter to finally turn the alarm off.
Itâs his birthday, and while you couldnât be there quite yet, your return would be all the sweeter for waiting. Belated birthday celebrations are fun too; itâs not the end of the world not having you there on his specific special day.
But he could still see you in every corner of his house. He smiled, noticing your coat and scarf still hanging inside his closet. You never seem to get those back or end up replacing them with other pieces of clothing as the seasons change.
He jumped out of bed, fixed on starting his day right, and tried to ignore his phone, which was already flashing with text notifications from Chanyeol. It had started at midnight, but he had already turned on the do not disturb setting. Chanyeolâs teasing would not be welcomed during his peaceful morning, even though a tinge of curiosity piqued within him to know what his texts could be about.
After showering, Kyungsoo's face lit up with a smile as his lovely dogs, Hoochoo and Meokmul, greeted him upon stepping out of his room with his hair still damp. He kneeled to accept sloppy dog kisses; their affectionate natures never failed to lift his mood. He filled their bowls with fresh water and food, tending to their needs before heading to the kitchen to prepare his own breakfast.
Kyungsoo chuckled softly when he saw your favorite snacks and ramyeon in the cupboards, still untouched. Heâd stocked up eagerly for your planned week together, thinking you were coming on the sixth.
It dawned on him why he had been feeling so blue these past few days, since he would be busy with work after his birthday and not be able to see you regularly again.
With a shake of his head, he began to prepare his breakfast. The fresh coffee aroma filled the kitchen, complementing the eggs he was frying along with some savory kimchi. Cooking made him happy; it wouldâve been better if someone else were there to share the food with, but so far he was content with how his day was going.
He set his toasts and kimchi eggs, accompanied by some leftover japchae and soy bean sprout soup. As he was about to fill his cup with coffee, the doorbell rang, leaving him puzzled since he was not waiting for anyone to come.
âKyungsoo-yah! Let me in.â Chanyeolâs voice came through the speaker, and the dogs started barking excitedly.
He wondered if Chanyeol somehow managed to hack his video doorbell and speak through it because he had ignored his texts. Silly Kyungsoo, he knew that Chanyeol wouldnât ever be clever enough to pull that off. Chanyeol would obviously resort to more annoying methods, like showing up at his house unannounced.
Kyungsoo hesitated, but his friendâs voice kept coming through along with the ring of the doorbell. He made his way to the entrance but only talked to Chanyeol through the speaker. âWhy are you here, Chanyeol?â
âHappy birthday, Kyungsoo!â Chanyeol said it in a singsong.
Kyungsoo chuckled. âThank you, bye!â he joked.
Chanyeol kept ringing to annoy Kyungsoo even more and get him to let him in, but Kyungsoo had opened just at the same time that he rang, so Chanyeol didnât notice at first. âYouâre going to break it; just come in,â Kyungsoo uttered.
âAre you ready?â Chanyeol entered, almost jumping out of his shoes and going straight to the kitchen. He greeted the cheerful little dogs on his way, who were the only ones who seemed truly happy to see him. âSmells pretty nice in here.â
Kyungsoo rushed to close the door and find Chanyeol before he could take anything from your snacks since he also loves the same types of bean chips. Luckily, he was only taking a look at the toasts for his breakfast. âReady for what?â Kyungsoo finished pouring some coffee into his cup. âWant some breakfast?â he asked as he saw him looking for a bowl.
âI could eat some,â Chanyeol mumbled. âI brought you seaweed soup; my mom made some for you.â He offered a warm smile, winning one back from the lonely birthday boy in front of him.
The container was small but seemed spacious enough to have soup for both of them, so Kyungsoo grabbed two medium-sized bowls from the storage. âGo ahead and eat whatâs already served. I can make some more toasts for me.â
Chanyeol rolled his eyes. âI can make toasts, eat your breakfast. Iâll serve the soup; itâs yours. I wonât eat any.â
Kyungsoo settled down at the table with his food and coffee, amused by his friendâs response. From a distance, he could sense the wheels turning in Chanyeolâs mind; whatever scheme he had planned, Kyungsoo was actually grateful for his taller friendâs happy virus energy to accompany him during the day.
Chanyeol sat in front of Kyungsoo, flashing him a small, mischievous smile before he dug into the delightful breakfast. Kyungsoo missed that gesture as he stopped Meokmul from climbing onto his lap.
As they ate and chatted, Kyungsoo seemed more and more at ease. Chanyeol caught him cracking a genuine grin at one of his silly jokes. âThereâs that smile!â He teased. âNow finish that toastâweâve got a full day ahead of us.â
Kyungsoo squinted at him suspiciously. âYou still havenât told me what youâve got planned.â
The laugh that escaped Chanyeol was not at all convincing for Kyungsoo. Kyungsoo felt uneasy about Chanyeol's hidden secret, as he didn't want to be left in the dark. However, his patience hadnât yet run out, so he decided to wait just long enough to get at least a clue before Chanyeol could drag him out of his house.
âYou just trust me; youâre gonna love it.â Chanyeol stood up and took Kyungsooâs emptied dishes. âIâll clean this; you go put on a coat or something.â
Kyungsoo was hesitant at first, but he made sure to watch from afar for any hint that his friend could let slip while he was busy with the dishes.
His phone was still flashing with texts from his friends, so he checked all of their messages. He laughed silently as he saw the insistent ones from Chanyeol to let him in, as well as the funny birthday wish at midnight. His smile grew as he saw texts from fellow actors and idols, but his heart fluttered once he saw yours.
You: Happy birthday đ„łđ wishing you all the fun and love you deserve on this day. I know Iâm away, but Iâll be with you in spirit no matter what you do đ you are in my heart always. I love you so much, see you in a bit đđ«°
Kyungsoo glanced up, a tenderness in his look that only the sun could witness. Your words warmed him up even more than the cozy clothes that he changed into, anticipating any activity that his friend could have planned.
Thrilled, he made his way back to the kitchen. He had almost forgotten about his friendâs suspicion, but his whispering on the phone served as a reminder. âWhat was that?â Kyungsoo asked, âare we meeting someone? Whyââ
âKyungsoo! Why are youââ Chanyeol was a little startled because of his sneaky friend. âHey, just wait there,â he said as he ended the mysterious call. âBaek will join us, and thatâs all Iâll say.â He chuckled tauntingly.
So the two menaces were accompanying him. Kyungsoo just laughed softly, letting things flow their course. For a second, he considered texting Junmyeon back on his offer for lunch, but somehow, Chanyeolâs plans seemed interesting.
It was satisfying to see the white blanket of snow covering the streets while the sun battled to defrost the glistening icicles on top of the bare tree branches. At least the weather was nice and managed to cheer him up even more, somehow matching his friends antics and the eagerness of their dogs.
The park came into view as they drove along the bridge, and Kyungsoo smiled, knowing that Chanyeol was taking them to a park for their dogs to have some fun too. He will take care of making a snowman out of Baekhyun as payback for all the teasing heâs been doing during the car ride.
The dogs were eager to get out of the car once they managed to get a spot in the parking lot. Baekhyunâs corgi, Mongryong, even let out a joyous howl, asking to be let out.
Kyungsooâs mood lifted even further with their enthusiasm. The park wasnât crowded since it was quite early, so he released their leashes, giving the dogs permission to romp.
After some time playing with their pets, Kyungsoo heard a notification ding. He briefly excused himself for a little privacy, as he wished it was you, but it had been a message from Woobin.
âHey, birthday boy!â Baekhyunâs voice distracted him, but he looked back at his phone to answer his hyungâs message.
He opened your text again, intending to reply when you were back online. Unfortunately, despite your lovely birthday wishes, you still didnât seem to be around. He decided to simply send his reply for you to check later, along with some pictures of the dogs playing with his friends.
Soo: Thank you baby! â€ïžđ you wonât believe how your wishes came true đYeol and Baek dragged me out to Seoul Forest with our pups. Iâm having fun tho
Baekhyun playfully shook Kyungsooâs shoulders, trying to make him go back. âCome, Soo! Donât get lost, little penguin.â
Kyungsoo turned to level him with his most lethal glare. Though not the tallest among them, Kyungsoo possessed a presence that commanded respect, making Baekhyun shrink back instinctively and realize it was time to flee. Kyungsoo ran around trying to catch him to finally turn him into a snowman.
The dogs followed them, with Chanyeol on tow, trying to make them all stop since snow was starting to fall quite heavily. Baekhyun stopped first, making Kyungsoo bump into him. Kyungsoo was breathless from running and laughing, but he managed to get Baekhyun on the ground.
Baekhyun and Kyungsoo moved the snow around them, making snow angels as Chanyeol laughed. âGuys! Look up; we might need to go find shelter or go backââ The ringing of his phone stopped him.
Chanyeol looked at the callerâs name and excused himself for a minute. He was almost whispering to the person on the other end, but Kyungsoo managed to listen to one sentence before Chanyeol walked farther away. âWeâre going now then!â
Kyungsoo was truly enjoying Chanyeolâs plans, but he was too curious about who he was talking to on the phone so much. He unmistakably guessed it was Baekhyun earlier, but he is now right in front of him, playing along with their dogs.
The flakes started to whirl downward in swift blizzards, making the wind pick up pitch. They knew there was no stopping the snowstorm, so Chanyeol called out that it was time to get back home and stay safe before it would be too dangerous to drive.
Surely enough, after a quick stop at Baekhyunâs house, traffic began to slow down as it became harder to mobilize because of the snowfall.
âAre you sure youâll be okay out there?â Kyungsoo asked before he got out of Chanyeolâs car. âYou can stay until itâs clear.â
Chanyeol managed to contain his laugh and only pulled off a warm smile at his friend. âNah, Iâll be okay. And perhaps, you know how much I love your dogs but the allergies might kick in and I need my meds.â
Kyungsoo nodded, understanding. They could also go and buy some, but it did seem like there was no stopping the snowstorm, and Chanyeol would be a lot safer in his own house.
âHope I managed to lift your spirits for a bit. Y/N will come back soon; cheer up!â He winked and put his thumb up.
Kyungsoo seemed to not catch the clue, but as they reached his apartment, his dogs had a surge of energy. Hoochoo sniffed below the door while Meokmul barked up at him, as if trying to let him know something.
He only grew worried, thinking they were hungry because he hadnât taken enough treats to the park, so he hurriedly entered his house as the dogs pulled on their leashes. He swiftly removed their gear as he hung his winter coat and beanie to leave them to dry.
The dogs kept barking and whimpering, but it took on a happy tone; soft shushing and whispers accompanied them, along with Kyungsooâs hopeful racing heartbeat.
You were back.
You were here.
Kyungsoo stared in awe, stopping for a second to check if it could be his hopeful mind playing tricks on him. But as his watery eyes focused and took you all in, his lips curled into the widest of smiles.
He walked over slowly, taken by a rush of emotions. Your heart almost broke at the sight, but he reassured you that he was okay, chuckling between a couple of sobs.
The embrace didnât take you by surprise, but he almost made you both fall to the ground. In that perfect moment, with you cradled safely in his arms, Kyungsoo found he had no words. All the lonely nights spent yearning for this very feeling evaporated as a warm and overwhelming emotion rose within his chest.
He buried his face deeper into your comforting scent, his fingers clinging onto you with a tighter hold than intended, but you made no attempt to break free from his trembling embrace. Your own hands stroked his back tenderly, soothingly, as if to say, âI'm here; it's really me. I've returned to you.â
After what felt like an eternity, Kyungsoo finally found the strength to pull back, his glistening eyes hungrily scanning your face, re-memorizing each cherished feature. His lips parted, but his thoughts eluded him; the snowstorm outside served as an illustration of the swirling emotions of gratitude, disbelief, and joy within him.
Sensing his struggle, you graced him with a tender yet radiant smile, one hand rising to cradle his cheek. "I've missed you too," you breathed, the simple words conveying so much.
At the sound of your voice, Kyungsoo's hesitancy crumbled, and he claimed your lips in a kiss that poured forth every unspoken emotion.
Breathless, you parted, but hesitant small kisses lingered upon your lips. You laughed as you gently kissed his chin, tracing over his lovely beauty marks, while Hoochoo playfully tugged at your pants.
âHow are you here?â He finally asked, taking your hand and leading you to the sofa, where you cuddled with the two adorable poodles.
You continued to laugh, and he cupped your cheeks. His hands felt a little cold, so you covered them with yours. He lovingly pushed your cheeks up and down, as if he were still trying to convince himself that you were really there. His five senses were now aware of your return, but it still felt like a dream in his heart. It was only when he felt your fingertips dry a couple of tears that he fully assimilated your presence.
âI might need a couple or more cups of coffee to stay awake, but I managed to come back sooner.â
He pulled off a shy smile. âOh, baby. You didnât have toâŠâ
You still felt his hands being cold, so you softly grabbed both of them and tried to wrap them in your warm ones. âNo, I needed to. I wanted your birthday to be perfect.â You kissed each of his hands. âI wish you couldâve gone to all the places I had in mind for you and your friends, but the snow was pretty heavy.â
Kyungsoo shook his head, trying to comprehend your words. âWait, wait⊠you planned-you asked Chanyeol to come and allââ
âYes, kinda! He was visiting you, so I asked him if he could help, and he accepted quite easily.â
He gazed at you, filled with wonder and affection. âSo Junmyeon hyungâs lunch invite, and Minseok hyung wishing we couldâve gone bowling, and Jongdae saying heâd stopped by to bring me a giftââ
âAnd all of the people who sent you any text other than to just wish you a happy birthday. I was planning on throwing you a small party when you came home, but the snowstorm happened and everyone got stuck, so I had to cancel.â
âWow! How? Did you know youâre amazing?â He chuckled and tenderly kissed your jaw. âI think this is better though. Having you back and everyone else here⊠you would have been distracting.â
Curling into your embrace, he rested his head on your chest, listening to the sweet sound of your heartbeat. The furry little ones nestled around the two of you, sighing contentedly.
âThis is all I need. Just being with you⊠you were my birthday wish.â Smiling softly, he tilted his face up for a tender kiss. At last, all he yearned for was no longer far away from him. His smiles were easier to pull off now that he got you back just in time.
