Ref sheet and redesign of my artificer elf

It's only as hard as you make it, but the more time you put in the better it will be for everyone! I love doing it but it was definitely shocking at first since I didnt really know what I was doing. I definitely have a few tips if you want to try it!

1. Start small: You can try to homebrew a campaign and DM for the first time but it will be a lot harder on you and frustrating for your players. Especially if they're used to playing and you're not used to DMing. Use a pre-written campaign or find a module online you like and run with that! It takes some pressure off you to come up with everything.

2. Invest time: a general rule of thumb is you should spend at least however long you plan on playing preparing for the session, so if you plan on playing for four hours on a Saturday expect to spend about 4 hours before preparing! This includes organizing monster stats, getting used to npc's, creating maps, and anything else that will help it go smooth. And if you plan on homebrewing expect it to take longer, that rule only works for things that are GOING to happen in the session so anything extra will take longer.

3. Expect the unexpected: it may go without saying but players are little shits in the best possible way. They'll have more fun if you don't shoehorn them into specific actions. Let them do whatever they want and flex the improv muscles. Just remember, if it gets too out of hand, instead of telling players they can't do something, let them do it and face the appropriate consequences. It'll make them fear your "you can certainly try!" Which is one of your most powerful tools as a DM.

4. Your players fun is your fun: Hopefully you know your players, so giving what they like a little bit of flair will make them feel all the more accomplished about exploring your world. The famous "how do you want to do this" is one way to do this, but there are other ways to work your characters into the world. An easy way is to try to describe each scene from a different characters perspective. For example, If the party horny bard, Gerald, asked about the tavern describe the beautiful maiden serving the drinks. If the surly half-orc barbarian, Patricia, asks, describe an arm wrestling match between two pathetic looking human men. Make the story their story!
