#2739 - Carex strictissima - Handsome Bastard Grass
AKA hook sedge and Uncinia strictissima. Carex was the Latin name for a species of sedge, and strictissima means very straight and narrow.
Grows in lowland scrub, swamps, lake margins and in damp clearings, but nearly extinct on the North Island where it has only been found on the Central Volcanic Plateau, and increasingly rare on the South Island where it is largely found east of the Southern Alps. The biggest threats appear to invasive weeds and browsing mammals.

There are many sedges in the genus Carex, and they’re notoriously difficult to key out. However, they’re always nice to look at! In the close up, you can easily see the anthers towards the apex of the inflorescence, and the stigmas at the base. In some Carex, male and female flowers are on separate inflorescences, and the position of male and female flowers is useful for identifying them. It’s always a challenge, though!
