The red stems of Cornus alba 'Sibirica' (Siberian dogwood) look great in this winter display border as they contrast with the groundcover of a golden leafed Carex (sedge) cultivar. This suckering deciduous shrub will produce a thicket of red stems, especially when growing in full sun. The new stems are most vibrant so once the plant is established the display benefits from the plants being cut back (coppiced) before ‘bud burst’ in spring.

Really excited about this one because this is it's first year flowering, and because the plant is dioecious I can finally sex the plant (it's a boy!). I had more of this species hoping to have a pair but this is the only one that survived (a very helpful neighbor ripped up the rest). Anyways it's fine because now I can just buy a lady plant and maybe get some fruit!

AKA hook sedge and Uncinia strictissima. Carex was the Latin name for a species of sedge, and strictissima means very straight and narrow.

Grows in lowland scrub, swamps, lake margins and in damp clearings, but nearly extinct on the North Island where it has only been found on the Central Volcanic Plateau, and increasingly rare on the South Island where it is largely found east of the Southern Alps. The biggest threats appear to invasive weeds and browsing mammals.
