Watching each otherâs backs every step of the way, they retreated to the VIP Quarters. Encountering no resistance, but finding it no less reassuring all the same. Though relieved to see the guest quarters empty, they were not terribly surprised to find the Young Masterâs closed. âWhoâs out there?â they heard Maximilianâs muffled voice demand. âWeâre armed, you know!â âItâs okay!â Justin assured him. âItâs just us!â âHow do I know youâre not being held at gunpoint or something?â The jangled suspicion coming through even clearer than his voice. âBecause I wouldnât be here if they were,â the bounty hunter answered, commenting, âNot bad, though, at least youâre still thinkingâŚâ âAnd why should I trust you?â âBecause she helped us beat Striker,â Shades told him. âHave you seen Bandit?â Max asked. âI havenât seen him since the attack startedâŚâ âHeâs fine,â Maximilian answered as he opened the door for them, power pistol pointed out warily. âYoung Masterââ Sebastian blurted from behind the bed, looking skittish enough to hit the deck at the first sudden move. âItâs okay,â he reassured the butler, even as he confirmed for himself that the hall was as devoid of enemies as they said. âSo what happened?â âMercerâs taken the bridge,â Shades informed him. Max, meanwhile, brushed past them the moment he saw his feline friend in the cabin, both immensely relieved to see each other alive and well. âAnd Strikerâs crew have the engine room,â the bounty hunter added. âIâm sure of it. Which means things just got a whole lot more complicated. And now weâre pet-sitting?â Justin and Shades, meanwhile, wasted no time racing into the other room and gathering up their gear, thanking their lucky stars that all of those interruptions had also prevented the pirates from looting any of it. Retreating back to the other room, they hastily threw on their clothes, the awkwardness of their capture coming back with a vengeance now that the fighting had subsided. At least for the moment, they now understood, as the implications of the bounty hunterâs words began to sink in. âWho are you?â Maximilian finally demanded, summing up all of their collective curiosity. âMy name is Roxy,â she answered, âbut most call me the Hunter.â âOr âThat Crazy BitchââŚâ Justin noted sourly. âAnd most folks who call me that tend to end up on the wrong side of fights with me,â Roxy warned him. âBesides, kid, right now you have bigger problems to worry about.â âWeâre sitting ducks out here, arenât we?â Shades asked point-blank. âYou catch on quick,â Roxy replied. âWithout the engines, we have no chance in hell of getting back to Alta. Which means that from here on out, weâre in a battle for control of this ship between now and dry land. Perhaps we should start with a roll call. I told you my name.â âMax,â he told her, âand this is Bandit.â âShades.â âJustin.â âIâm Maximilian Vandenberg, the owner of this ship,â the Young Master introduced himself, âAnd this isâ wasâ my butler, Sebastian. Iâm grateful for your help.â âDonât thank me yet, kid,â Roxy cautioned him. âWeâve still got a long way to go.â âYou know something about all this, donât you?â Though there was little question in Maximilianâs tone. âFrom the looks of things, more than you do,â the bounty hunter told him. âBut since I donât have obstructive bureaucrats who wonât let me talk to key witnesses out here, perhaps you could tell me something I donât know. What really happened to Albert Freedan and Aden Rawne?â âYou wouldnât believe me, even if I told you,â the Young Master sighed, and the others nodded solemnly. âThatâs why I gave them the short and sweet version. Freedan and Rawne are both dead, but they took a lot of money we were never able to recoverâŚâ âYour detective work leaves much to be desired,â Roxy replied. âI got a lot of intel out of the members of Rawneâs crew you missed. As Iâm sure you know by now, Mercer was the buyer for Freedanâs arms, one of his various money laundering schemes, and Mercer finally found a buyer of his own, Striker. Then Strikerâs little stunt in Alta the other day threw a wrench in their works. Then, just when it looked like their deal might fall through, you went and approached the Assembly.â âSloanâŚâ Maximilian hissed, remembering the name all too well from his little chat with Mercer. âFreedan was already planning to use this ship, which is why they dragged it out of mothballs,â she explained, âso all Mercer had to do was smuggle his arms aboard as âcargoâ and Assemblyman Sloan could finally wash his hands of his part in the whole Vandenberg scandal.â âBut what about the rest of the Assembly?â Shades pointed out. âAre they just as crooked? And what about Mercerâs âpast experienceâ?â âIâm afraid you dropped the ball on that one,â Roxy told them. âMercer is an arms dealer, a smuggler, and his âpast experienceâ running ships was as a pirate. According to my sources, heâs hijacked at least two other ships along the way, so Iâm not surprised he backstabbed you, too. For what itâs worth, if he didnât have a dangerous man like Aden Rawne backing him, thatâs probably what he would have done to Freedan, as well.â âSo what do you know about Rawne?â Max piped up. âIf you donât mind me asking?â âRawne?â She paused for a moment, gathering her thoughts. âAccording to my info, heâs a free-lance merc with a preference for high-rolling clients. Bodyguard, escort, expeditionary. Known to tide himself over with piracy between more lucrative clients⌠Or at least, he was.â âAnd Freedan?â Justin wondered aloud. âNext to nothing,â she admitted. âPossibly even an alias. Apparently, he was from New Cali, by all accounts, but that seems to be all anyone in Alta really knew about him. My guess? He probably pissed off some powerful people back in New Cali, and spent all this time looking for a way to buy his way back in.â âWhich leads us right back here,â Maximilian concluded. âI was originally hoping to collect on Mercer and Striker, but now itâs down to just Mercer, and our chances of doubling back to Alta are pretty much shot now. That means the rest of his crew are living on borrowed time if they donât hand him over. I donât take prisoners unless theyâre worth somethingâŚâ âSo itâs kill or be killed with you?â Max looked her square in the eye. âIâm a bounty hunter.â Roxy blinked, otherwise taking his gaze head-on. âI donât get paid unless I haul someoneâs ass in for something. And I donât know about you, but I donât plan to spend the rest of this voyage surrounded by cutthroats waiting to kill me around every corner.â âTrying to keep them all locked up would be a pain in the assâŚâ Justin agreed. âBut if anyone does surrender quietly,â Shades proposed, âwe should find some section of the ship to use as a brig.â âYour funeral,â Roxy shot back, âbut if they get in my way, theyâre dead. Weâre dead in the water out here, boys. Have you given any thought to the food or water situation? And thatâs to say nothing of what we do if Striker comes back aroundâŚâ All the while, Maximilian crumpled into the foot of his bunk, head down, looking as if he were trying to vanish into the corner. âIâve never really done anything on my own, have I?âŚâ he nearly sobbed. âMaybe Freedan was right after allâŚâ Sebastian simply sighed, looking like he wanted to say something encouraging, but just couldnât find the words after all theyâd been through lately. âPull yourself together,â Shades told him, with every word trying not to dwell on the most recent gauntlet of perils heâd run himself. âWeâve survived worse than this. Youâve survived worse than this. Remember that.â âAnd where were you when Freedan was taking my home?â he demanded, raising his head to stare right at her with his baleful gaze. âSomewhere between Torgo and Alta⌠Your guess is as good as mine.â The Young Masterâs burning glare crumbled into a blank, ashen look. âDonât look at me like that, kid,â Roxy shot back. âIâm a bounty hunter, not a babysitter. Iâm nobodyâs hero. The Assembly didnât even hire me until after Freedan disappeared. Thatâs just how it is.â âWould ya cut him some slack?â Justin muttered. âHe just lost his father, his home, everythingâŚâ Then paused and turned to him. âStill, be glad you got to have a father. Unlike some of us.â âShit happens.â Roxy shrugged. âThe question is: what are you gonna do about it?â Max simply stood there, looking at his double as if he wanted to say something, yet held his peace, wearing the same somber expression as when they found Percivalâs remains deep in the ruins. âIâm here now,â she told him, âand I happen to be an ally. I donât need any dead weight.â A troublesome ally, Shades concluded, but an ally nonetheless⌠âSo what do you want?â Roxy asked him straight-up. âI want my ship back.â âAre you willing to fight for it?â And she was answered with indecisive silence. âUm, if I might contribute something hereâŚâ Sebastian spoke up for the first time in this conversation, then trailed off for a moment, as if to make sure they would actually hear him out before he resumed: âMercer doesnât have to rely on the engines. Donât forget, the Excelsior is equipped with an auto-rigged sail system that allows for sailing and maneuvering of a ship this size, even with only a skeleton crew onboard.â âIf heâs remembered that,â Roxy pointed out, âthen Alta is out of the question. That means weâll have to regain control of the ship before he can do anything else.â The cabin got very quiet as they steeled themselves to take the next step.
