i’m not sure it would do any good, but...i’d tell younger me not to be so afraid, not of god and not of other people and not of myself. and not to listen to mom - about anything.

Talk about three of the most important ships throughout your life.

Pacey/Joey (Dawson’s Creek) was not my first ‘ship (I had a lot of feelings about Ben and Annie from the soap Sunset Beach, fact fans), but it’s the first ‘ship where I waded into the choppy tides of fandom. I wrote (terrible, ooc) fic for them! My diary at age 14 is basically just a love letter to them! Sigh. Pacey/Joey. That was a good ‘ship.

John Nolan/Jesse Lacey (Brand New/Taking Back Sunday). This was my first RPF ‘ship (and boy I had a lot of angst about this – note to bb!Nicola: as far as sins go, writing about real people fucking is, like… it’s fine, chill out) and ushered in the period in my life when reading/writing/thinking about boys in bands was really important to me. Hell, it still is important to me (I just this week sketched out a novel idea about boys in a band). It’s still a little sore for me that John/Jesse never lit bandom on fire like a Pete/Patrick or a Gerard/Mikey. C’mon, you guys. OTP means I pulled the trigger; OTP means you get what you deseeeeeerve.

Brandon/Callie (The Fosters), since it’s kind of stupidly tailored to my kinks. I still can’t believe how much fic that I, an eternal fandom butterfly, wrote about those two: some 40,000 words, and it just flowed out of me, because every angsty incesty bittersweet scene between them fuels me.

Have you ever been disappointed when your ship finally got together?

Honestly, so few of my ‘ships get together, this is kind of a moot point. The episode of The Mighty Boosh where Howard and Vince kiss was a bit of a downer, since it was basically just making fun of fandom? Which is never what I’m into.

Has a ship ever broken your heart?

Hey, here’s a hypothetical… if, say, maybe the show recast one half of my OTP and then had him casually cheat on the other half of the OTP *on their wedding day*…. that might break my heart… oh wait, that was what happened this week when I watched Top of the Lake. lolololol cool cool.

There was also that time one half of an RPF ‘ship of mine turned out to be a rapist, but we don’t talk about that.

Have you noticed a pattern in your shipping? Is there a romantic dynamic you’re more drawn to?

DEFINITELY NOT INCEST

I am partial to one very innocent party being corrupted by a more nefarious party (especially if the innocent party ends up outplaying the nefarious party in the end). At the moment, this describes Petyr/Sansa (Game of Thrones), but I can trace it back through soooo many of my ‘ships, including Hannibal/Abigail (Hannibal), Lex/Lana (Smallville), anything involving Nikolai Morozov.

Good-boy meets bad-girl (with some corruption involved) is a softer variant of that. Brandon/Callie (The Fosters) fits in there.

Occasionally, against my darker instincts, I go balls to the wall for some best-friends-make-the-best-lovers. See: Sydney/Will (Alias), Seth/Ryan (The O.C.), the aforementioned John/Jesse, and yep Brandon/Callie.
