   Werethe first words to leave her mouth when Evelynn opened the door ; and there shestood, smiling, holding a beautiful bouquet cradled carefully against her one realarm. No matter how many months she’d had to get used to the bionic, crafted ofplastic and metal, still she feared that one touch would destroy anything delicate. And she was frightened of that, in a waythat she wished she did not have to be. So that hand did not dare touch them,but the restriction did not seem to dampen the curve of her lips.

   Andshe just got paid, and they were slightly discounted, and she really fucking deserved them.

   Finally, she took a breath. The flowers were lovely, delicate bluesand purples speckled with tiny whites, a tapestry of petals that made her thinkof the night sky. Melissa knew Evelynn, knew her in the sort of way that made everynight sky look like the memory of her, made stars feel like home. And she wasn’tcertain precisely where she would be ifnot for her friendship, a most precious thing.
