Here's the story as she told it to me. Whoever she was before, she was born to a rich family. Part of the first generation to grow up with VR - and they could provide her all the latest tech for it. She was native. Made herself a hobby building custom sims before she was double-digits. Course, then puberty hits, and it hits like a tidal wave. I've heard of some weird shit - haven't we all - but I'm not gonna repeat the stuff she told me about. Simulation became an addiction - and it's not enough, of course - if it had ever been enough she'd have stuck with that instead of going after worse - always gotta be more immersive, more real; sooner or later it's gotta be deadly. And she knows it's bad. Course it fucking is. You remember how I said she was making her own simulations? Well, she'd gotten pretty good at that. Really fucking good. And she'd got an idea - circumvent simulated experience entirely. Go straight for the emotion centres in the brain. Cuts the problem out completely.

Didn't work, of course. She's not that good.

...Now here's where the stories diverge on what's fact. According to her own good self, having burned-up and hollowed-out her own head, what slithered in was an old god - something out there just waiting for someone it could make listen. It built her back up. They're one and the same now. Of course most people reckon that's a crock of shit - or more accurately, exactly the sort of thing someone who fried their own brain would come up with. Still, there's some - there's always some - reckon something did make its way into her mind. The details are as fuzzy as they always are with conspiracy theories - but just in case there is a rogue AI hitchhiking in there, I'd rather it liked me than not.
