I can’t afford to take a day off work today because I chose the path of underground self-employment, but Sean and I and CVLT Nation stand in solidarity with A Day Without Women as a woman- and minority-owned business. My work is as valuable as any other human being’s work on this planet, and a large part of it is unpaid; domestic jobs that I watched my grandmothers, my mother and friends’ mothers and my aunts do my entire life, knowing that one day these daily jobs would fall to me, in addition to holding down a paid full time job. I’m lucky to have a partner that helps me and doesn’t let 100% of these tasks fall to me in our daily life. Today he’s committed to taking care of all of the things that I do around the house, in addition to the work he does for our business, and I’m grateful that he sees the value in what I do, but also the value in accepting those responsibilities as a man. We’d like all of the men who read CVLT Nation to reflect on what the women in their lives do for them on a daily basis, and we encourage you to take on these tasks for your partner, or for your mother or grandmother, or for your sister, to show solidarity for the vital nature of what’s been termed “women’s work” for the human species.
