Why bumble bees decline and what they eat
The main cause of bumble bee decline is habitat loss and the excessive use of pesticides. When wild flowers are removed, pollinators are deprived of nectar, which results in bumble bee decrease. To visually convey the reasons behind bee endangerment and the extinction of numerous flowers and plants, I aim to incorporate elements depicting the spraying of toxins.
During my research, I explored various artworks that depict destructive human activities and the lack of concern for our wildlife. I used these pieces as inspiration and looked at how creative individuals advocate for the environment. Among these works, I particularly enjoyed the piece by Gracia Lam, which effectively portrays the disconnection of humans and nature. It emphasises the vulnerability of nature and highlights the barriers people built up between themselves and the natural world. The artwork conveys a powerful message of forgetting our existence is a part of a unified whole. By getting rid of other vital members of this system, we harm ourselves in the long run.

In order to avoid predicting what colours are good for mental health from my perspective, I researched colours for well-being. I was expecting that predominantly rich greens and serene blues would be the answer. To my surprise, upon exploring a webpage that explains the impact of different colour shades, I discovered that more dull tones can make someone feel relaxed and in touch with their emotions. I was particularly fascinated by the calming qualities of grey, as I used to associate it with a depressed and lazy mood. However, according to the article, these colors evoke relaxation because they are not overwhelming, busy, or excessively vibrant. They are quite neutral and evoke neither happiness nor sadness, but rather communicate a sense of tranquility and emotional balance.

After doing my research into patterns, I decided to focus on defining the topic for my project. Previously, when I was writing my Mini Learning Agreement, I always had nature in mind and, therefore, decided to look into current global problems affecting ecosystems.Â
My attention was drawn to water scarcity and habitat destruction. I knew little about both of them and decided to read about these issues and see if any of them spark ideas for my brief. After reading an article from National Geographic about habitat destruction, I became invested in the subject and saw potential for further exploration and development. This theme is clear but broad enough to research. I would also be able to create patterns that represent plants, animals, insects or fish, as all of these living creatures are suffering from human activity.Â
For example, the fact that the amount of trees on the planet decreased by 46% shocked me and made me realise that I can advocate for the issue in my project and encourage people to take action.Â
I was interested in this subject of matter, as well as mental health, which led my to my current idea of making a project that would connect people with nature. This would not only improve their mental health but also remind them to take care of our surroundings.Â

I looked at these 3 websites about current trends and styles in interior design to support the background of my brief. My chosen issue was the fact that people struggle to decorate their spaces and find suitable furniture. The articles I looked at helped me to understand what styles I am talking about (eclectic, Mediterranean) and what pattern aesthetic I am seeking to design.Â

Overall, we were really pleased with our feedback and this workshop helped us to understand what we should be paying attention to when we are writing our own brief.Â
