Mosaic and Half Drop Pattern in Procreate by Liz Ness and Wooly Pronto
After trying to draw my pattern on illustrator I decided that Procreate might be a better solution for me in this case. I really like the physicality of creating a drawing on my iPad, which allows me to fully enjoy the process of using a brush and have a better control of the lines.
The first tutorial by Lizz Ness demonstrated how to use drawing assistant and symmetry tool to create a pattern. She made her mosaic piece by adding an image of the pattern to one of her thick brushes. Lizz then painted the canvas with it, by which she made a repeated pattern. I liked the simplicity of this method but with that came the low quality of an artwork and no ability to have control over the way it is repeated.
After this I found another tutorial by Wooly Pronto that shows how to make a seamless half drop pattern. This method seemed more appealing to me, as it dwelled into a more professional way of pattern creation with interesting technicalities. In order to create this type of pattern, your initial artwork needs to be sectioned into 6 parts and flipped vertically and horizontally a few times. This allows you to see negative spaces, add missing bits and position your elements in an appropriate order.
