I want to share my head canon; which is that Kakashi and Gai got married on the playground when they were 5/6 year old, and since they never divorced (unlike Kakashi and Obito, who kept getting divorced every other day. It got to the point where they forgot to get married again first and would just have DOUBLE divorce.) they never felt the need to get married again as adults. That is, until the tax benefits and joint pension plans became too tempting to resist.
But Kakashi still has his flower ring Gai made him at their alter (the slide). He uses it as a book mark. (Gai, sadly, lost his during one of his many challenges to Kakashi, sadly.)
I love the idea of Kakashi holding onto that little flower ring for all of these years. He has it tucked away in a book he doesn't take outside of the house because it's so precious to him (he can't risk losing it in battle. Absolutely not!)
and Gai panicked when he realized he lost him and searched the entire village for it, only to fail. Kakashi helps him but he's also trying to comfort him the entire time, assuring him that it's just a silly ring from when they were kids. Deep down he understands Gai's pain, though. He knows if he lost the ring Gai gave him he'd never be able to forgive himself.
When/If they ever have a real wedding ceremony, Kakashi actually uses that book-pressed ring as his new wedding band for Gai. Obviously, he can't use it as is, but he goes to a jeweler who agrees to work the flower into a cute little wedding band. it has to be broken up for this, but the petals and leaves that survived all these years are placed into a mold and rather than using gold they use a clear substance (think like resine) to encase the flower. Needless to say when Kakashi puts that on Gai's ring at the wedding Gai breaks down in tears.
it's so sweet.
Kakashi also still has the one ring Obito gave him, which was made out of a bit of mud and some random flower petals. it's not the prettiest thing, and it's more of an actual ring that kept its shape, and Kakashi cherishes it. It stays in a little dish on Kakashi's desk that holds some of his smallest but most precious items.
