Synopsis: An excerpt from the unnamed prequel to Curses and Constellations -- in which Nadia is plagued by dreams after winning a war, but having to pay the ultimate sacrifice...
Word Count: 977
TW/CW: Mentions of death
The room was decorated extravagantly, diamond chandeliers, every patron dressed in red and gold dresses and suits. Melodic music played from the stage, and those who were not indulging themselves with expensive wine and plorig were dancing along to the tunes. Soft chatter and laughter filled the room alongside the music, and clinking of glasses rang out every now and then. Soft lights sparkled above the ceiling, bobbing and suspended in the air as if held there by some invisible force.
When Nadia opened her eyes, she was in the ballroom. She assumed it was Orlance’s, judging by the red accompanying all the gold of the decorations and dresses. She had been in this ballroom before, the curvature and sculpture of the ceilings and pillars familiar in form. The intricate framework of the doors leading to the balconies were perfectly detailed, so were the paintings on the ceilings.
Looking down, she realized she was in a dress similar to one of the other femme figures in the crowd. A gold dress with red trim, cinched at the waist with a deep neckline, and off the shoulder sleeves. A familiar necklace was adorned on her chest, the gold standing out against her dark skin. Her afro curls were pulled back by a golden headband studded with rubies, and the iconic silver eye pin was stuck to the fabric of her dress. In her hand was a wine glass full of red wine, a bracelet adorned on her wrist, silver and gold rings on her fingers.
She gained her bearings as she looked around the room, wondering what had brought her here.
And then she saw her.
She parted from the crowd, immediately captivating Nadia and taking her breath away. Her long black hair fell over her shoulders like a glossy curtain, her neckline exposing her sharp collarbones. Her dress was similar to that of Nadia’s, almost like they were made of the same cloth, by the same careful hands. A glittering golden dress with red lace and trim, with long flowing sleeves and a slim skirt that fanned out at the bottom. A golden rose was situated in her hair, and the perfect shade of red adorned her slim lips. In one hand she held a glass of plorig, the other at her side.
She slinked over to Nadia, her lips quirked into an easy smile, the sort of smile Nadia missed.
“Look who decided to show up!” Frea said, sidling close to Nadia. “I expected you to be a no-show, honestly.” She lifted her glass to her lips and took a swig of her drink.
Nadia stammered, eyes tracing over Frea. It had been so long… Nadia had thought she had forgotten what she looked like — yet here she was, with every perfect, intricate detail intact.
Frea chuckled at Nadia’s reaction. “I’d always wanted to make you speechless. It’s a wonderful feeling.” Even hearing her speak was exhilarating, and yet, it made her want to cry. It had been far too long since she had heard her voice, seen her face, heard her say her name.
Although she faltered, Frea did not. Frea outstretched a perfectly manicured hand.
“Care to dance?” She asked easily, the words passing over her tongue as if she had asked the question a million times.
Nadia hesitated. This isn’t real, she told herself. Yet, why did it feel so lifelike?
Nadia took a deep breath, and put her hand in Frea’s, smiling bittersweetly. Frea quickly whisked her to the dance floor, their wine glasses disappearing into thin air. It all felt so familiar as they found a spot, hands sidling into spots on the shoulder, the waist, and in each other’s palms. Memories of a first dance at a festival with tentative touches and shy glances bubbled to the surface, and it only made Nadia’s heart ache even more.
The two waltzed and spun as the music played, whisking them into a new realm of possibility. It felt so right to fall into step with her, to put a hand on Frea’s shoulder and smile at her as they carefully danced. But every other glance stirred painful memories, and depressing images were still plastered to her eyelids every time she closed her eyes.
As the music shifted to a slow song, they began to slow their pace, and instead sway in place, the other pulled close.
“Isn’t this nice?” Frea asked quietly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Nadia nodded, a sad smile on her lips. “It is.” She forced herself to look away from Frea’s dark eyes, her chest aching. “There’s just one problem.”
Frea squeezed her hand reassuringly, offering a small smile. “What is it, my love?”
Nadia screwed her eyes shut, shoulders hunching up. She pressed her forehead to Frea’s shoulder, feeling weak suddenly.
“You’re not here,” Nadia all but sobbed, trying to keep the tears at bay.
“What do you mean?” Frea asked, stilling her feet and guiding Nadia’s face to hers, so their gazes could catch. “I’m right here.” Her thumb drifted softly over Nadia’s cheek, eyes softening. How was it that someone already gone could have such soft eyes?
Nadia smiled — How couldn’t she? Frea always knew the right thing to say. She nodded slowly, giving Frea’s hand a squeeze.
“You’re right,” she said, pressing her forehead against Frea’s. It felt so real, like Frea was there with her. “How foolish of me.”
Frea chuckled, and wrapped her arms around Nadia. Nadia screwed her eyes shut as Frea pressed a kiss to her hairline, Nadia squeezing in on herself tightly, feeling tears prick at the corners of her eyes.
It felt so real. The dreams always did. But no matter what happened in the dreams, how close Frea felt or looked or sounded, when Nadia awoke, the bed was always empty, and Frea was still dead.

“I get it. You don't have to keep rambling.” He smiles. A genuine smile. Not one of contempt or made because he thinks he’s got the upper hand. A real smile. It looks good on him.
He laughs, and it shakes me a little. He just laughed. Milo laughed. It sounds nice.
Mitchie sits up and stretches. “Okay, now that I’ve got some food in my system, we can take of your curse.”
Milo looks at me and narrows his gaze. “You’re cursed?” He looks me up and down, like he can’t believe it.
I cross my arms at him. “Yeah, but the good looks come naturally.” I make a show of tossing what little hair I have and quickly following Mitchie out the door.

i officially have finished 10 chapters of curses and constellations! total word count so far is 22k+, with chapters ranging from 1.7k - 2.4k words. this is only the first draft, so chapters and their word counts are subject to change when the time for second drafting comes around. ideally i want the chapters to be longer, but we'll see how that goes when the first draft is done and the final word count is official.
but i'm so proud of myself for this! i've had the idea for this story for so long, and have only recently sat down and decided to flesh out the story and the characters. i love the story and the characters, but it definitely needs some fine-tuning. but so far, i am so proud of how it's going!
here's a line from chapter 10 without context:
“Did you seriously think I was going to attack that old man?” He asks very angrily in a hushed tone.
