“Good evening.”

He felt the light tap of the mouse landing on his shoulder, accompanied by the soft scrabble of tiny claws on the fabric of his shirt. The little brown critter didn’t hesitate at his greeting, instead perching on his shoulder next to his ear.

“Be wary of strangers on roads untraveled,” The wise mouse whispered, “The Motherbeast stirs, and her children grow restless.”

He offered the tiny creature his palm.

“I’m not searching for a stranger, Adaline,” He laughed, “And the lesser beasts will not challenge me.”

“Strangers are not sought out,” The mouse replied, “And they are growing in number as the days tick past.”

He sighed again, shaking his head at the little creature, “I’ll be careful.”

The mouse nodded, turning as he crouched to let it jump from his hand.

He took a deep breath, staring out at the mountains before him, snow-capped peaks nearly blinding in the setting sun. He held that breath for a moment, then took his first step.
