Constance wears a mask that fully covers her face, but it isn’t a masquerade one or made to look beautiful in contrast to what the incident had done to her. It’s a mask that is designed to prevent people from interacting with her for their own safety.
The type of mask is essential. Constance wears a Bauta mask whenever she’s in her own privacy or around anyone else in the house. This includes sleeping. Whenever company from outside is on the property, she wears a Moretta mask so that way she has no choice but to keep quiet.
A bauta mask helps her drink and eat normally without it being removed. A moretta mask has buttons that the mouth clamps down on so the wearer can’t speak since there are no straps around the head.
The moretta mask is used for whenever Constance has the nerve to speak against her father’s new marriage. At first, her new step mother was kind to her and had encouraged Constance to show her face to her since she would be her new mother in a few weeks. Constance was grateful for her new step mom until after the wedding when it was announced that the new matriarch was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had miscarried. The grief took its toll on her step mom and she actually began to believe her new step daughter was cursed. She avoided Constance like the plague and came to pregnant again, this time with a boy.
The boy grew up spoiled and living the life Constance always wanted. Loving parents, friends, and a bright future. Of course, the boy never knew of his sister’s existence since his parents didn’t want him near her. They were afraid he’d be met by Death or something much more worse than death.
It wasn’t until late one night at a party thrown at the Manor did Constance come to meet the Grand Duke.
