This week Fr. Rossi will be talking about Steph Curry! Here is the preview of his homily:

STEPH CURRY’S NEW SHOES

“Whoever is in Christ is a new creation.”

Last Fall, Stephen Curry released the second shoe influenced by his faith. __________

In February 2015, Under Armour released the Curry One, which featured the tagline "Charged By Belief" and 4:13 on the tongue.

This was a nod to Saint Paul's Letter to the Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through him who strengthens me," Steph’s favorite Bible passage.

Curry won an MVP award and NBA championship wearing Curry One's, and this past September, Under Armour announced plans for his latest shoe. __________

The Curry Two was released by Under Armour in China on Sept. 6, Japan and the Philippines on Sept. 7, and globally on Oct. 24.

The slogan for the Curry Two is "Iron Sharpens Iron," a Biblical reference even more obvious than the one for the Curry One.

The Old Testament's Book of Proverbs 27:17 reads, "Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." __________

Curry's ministry style is subtle.

He's not, as he says, a "beat people over the head with the Bible" type.

But his approach is to make his faith so infused into his existence that knowing him means coming into contact with his faith.

That pattern holds true with both the Curry One and Two. __________

“You don’t want to scare people away with the idea that I’m perfect or that you have to be perfect to find the Christian calling,” Curry said.

“It means a lot to be able to spread Jesus' message, whether that’s what you believe or whether it helps you find whatever it is that motivates you to do all things.

"Every time you put on the shoe, it’s a good reminder of what is possible.” __________

“`Charged by Belief’ and `Iron Sharpens Iron’ have a lot of meaning,” Curry said.“

“They match with the Under Armour story, being an underdog and having to build from the ground up, and the belief Kevin Plank had in his vision.

“They’re also about my faith and the belief in my game despite what other people might say.” __________

The freedom to blend his faith into his brand had something to do with why Curry took the risk of leaving Nike, which dominates the market share in sports apparel.

But with Under Armour, Curry finds the freedom to use his basketball platform as he desires, something Nike would not permit. __________

What I like about the Christian theology behind Curry’s shoes is what I like about Jesus’ Parable of the Prodigal Son.

The loving Father in the story is “charged” by his belief in God’s love and forgiveness.

This in turn is what will ultimately save his self-indulgent son, who returns home because he recalls that his Father always showed him these two virtues.

This is what finally moves the reckless son to return home!

The Father’s iron has finally sharpened the iron of his son. __________

At the end of the parable we are left, however, with a question: actually two questions.

First, will the older son, who refuses to forgive his younger brother, ultimately relent as his Father begs him to do?

And second, will we respond to God our Father?

After all, that’s the Father's real identity in the parable? __________

Will we leave Mass on this Laetare (Rejoice) Sunday with the Father’s prodigal or extravagant heart that reaches out to both his sons and tries to teach them that love and mercy are the only ways to live?
