I know that you shouldn't think too much into the realism of a tv show because it can "break the magic" but have you ever thought of just how many times Jane has to go back to his empty Malibu home to get a change of clothes or to do laundry. Or literally anything domestic that requires a place of living
We see him basically turning the CBI office (or rather his couch) and his room in the roof into his "home" because he doesn't want to go home to sleep in the house that his family was murdered in. But does he shower there?? Where does he keep his many many 3-piece suits?? Sure, he could've turned a spare cupboard in the CBI building into his personal closet space, or maybe he even has a locker that Lisbon helped him acquire somewhere...
However, realistically speaking he has to do laundry or shower or pick up new suits sometime right? Meaning - he has to force himself back to the Malibu home and face his past everytime. Heck, he could've kept his suits in a wardrobe in the master bedroom he shared with Angela. Imagine walking past The Room, to get to his and his wife's room, those must hold a lot of memories.
