This past weekend I was fortunate enough to have been in the front row for Grouplove at Foellinger Auditorium. The show was incredible on all fronts but what struck me the most about the performance was Christian Zucconi’s (vocals and guitar) resemblance to Kurt Cobain. The shaggy red hair in his face, painted nails, faded, distressed jeans, Nike sneakers, and crazy guitar antics while he belted the lyrics to “Colours” took me back to the many Nirvana performances I have watched on YouTube while neglecting my homework. Both performers’ love for their art and energy are evident in their performances as they thrashed their guitars and shouted the lyrics through their sweaty hair. I could almost imagine Zucconi's singing of “Tongue Tied” as Cobain’s “Lithium.” Grouplove does not have the classic grunge sound of Nirvana, but rather a poppy “indie rock” with the classic rock-band instrument arrangement of two guitars, a bass, drums, and keyboard. Their songs remind one of the summer after high school graduation and the transition to the next chapter in life. The audience and I enjoyed every minute of the performance as we matched the band's energy and sang along. I also enjoyed Hannah Hooper’s skeleton morphsuit as it reminded me of the full black morphsuit performer at Nirvana’s performance at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle in 1990. It was definitely bittersweet to realize that seeing Zucconi perform was the closest I will probably ever be to experiencing a Kurt Cobain or true Nirvana performance; I just hope Courtney doesn’t get her hands on him.

When I first saw the Star Course booth on Quad Day during the first week of school I was immediately pulled in by their old posters showcasing all the artists they have brought to the campus. Ranging from Fun. to Matisyahu they have always brought a wide range of amazing acts to this university so I knew that I had to get involved. So I attended the information session and interviewed and here I am! A full member of what is, in my opinion, the best club on campus. I knew this club was going to be the right fit for me after the second staff meeting when the senior managers announced that the next show would be the rising trap DJ/producer Baauer! I silently exploded with excitement because I had known about him even before the Harlem Shake became a meme sensation. I had seen his set at Lollapalooza last August so I knew that he can throw down an insane set.

When the show came around I was lucky enough to be able to work security backstage. I was able to feel and hear the bass as it shook Foellinger Auditorium. I was worried that something was going to fall from the ceiling the bass was so powerful. I could not believe the power behind all of his music. And after awhile the staff was allowed to go into the auditorium to watch the show and that’s when all the fun really started. Baauer uses some of the most intense visuals I had ever seen. When I saw him at Lolla he had to use the stock set up that every DJ uses there, not that it was boring but it wasn’t made for him. For this tour Baauer brought all his own screens with a light show that was made for him and it definitely set him apart from other DJs. His visuals were bright and colorful with an interesting array of images. His images would jump from ‘90s style video game flames and guns to eyes darting around the room unable to focus on anything and even a gangster throwing up signs looming over the crowd. All of which fit perfectly with his hip hop inspired beats and heavy bass. The whole crowd was loving it and I guarantee everyone in that room is going to have a ringing in their ears for a couple weeks as a friendly reminder of the amazing show Baauer put on right here on the UIUC campus in Foellinger Hall.
