The episode where Gus and Shawn visit that gifted kids school is so interesting because it just reinforces how smart Shawn actually is. You'd think an episode where a goofball like Shawn hangs out with a bunch of "technically near genuises" would make him look like an idiot but we actually see so much of Shawn in the kids.
During Shawns lesson at the school where he demonstrates his psychic ability, one of the kids directly calls him out, saying he could "just be hyperobservant" where as every other person (not super genuis children) always marvel at his abilities and think it's impossible and therefore supernatural. Even the people who don't believe in psychics!!!! They never can call him out in any specific way other than "I don't know how you know that but it's not because you're psychic."
In one scene the two main genuis kids pick apart Lassiter and Juliet (mainly Lassiter):
Goddard: Are you guys, like, together?
Shockley: No, she's way out of his league.
Goddard: But no ring. Given his age I'm guessing divorced.
Lassiter: I- uh- Sorry. What?
Shockley: Still can't talk about it. So it's relatively recent then? I'm getting seperated, not divorced.
Goddard: Did you ever just listen to her problems, rather than always trying to solve them?
Shockley: No, you had to be the big tough cop, didn't you? You never let her inside.
That is exactly the type of deductive reasoning Shawn makes down to the "I'm getting seperated, not divorced."
