No, it's not an animal. It's a plant, actually algae. A marimo is a rare growth form of the species where the algae grow into large green balls. In Japanese Mari is a bouncy play ball. Mo is a generic term for plants that grow in water. They are often sold as plants for aquariums. If you scroll through the marimo tag here on tumblr, you'll see that many have them in small aquariums because they look pretty and even move a bit around. They start floating while they produce oxygen.
