Holding the lantern high, he peered down the thoroughfare, listening intently for any unusual movement--the rustle of weeds or scraping of claws on the cobblestones. Nothing. Exhaling a frustrated huff, breath condensing into vapor in the air, the student began his way back up the street. He and a handful of others had been informed that the likelihood of beats being able to break into the forbidden township was high this night, and thus had been delegated ti stop any who wandered inside. Evidently not high enough, however, for he had been out for hours without so much as a peep. 

Dara half-suspected that the others on their patrols farther in had simply given up and shuttered themselves inside. Of course, he didn’t blame them. This was such dull and tedious work, and he was wrestling with the idea of simply heading home as well.

But still, on the minimal percentage of a chance that something were to happen and he was not here to attend to it, it would come down on his head. And his desire not to deal with culpability for inattention more than he wanted a nap.
