My new pistol, a Kahr CT9! A budget minded gun in 9mm. It is single stack with a near full length grip having a capacity of 8+1. My local gun store was having its anniversary sale and I couldn’t pass a deal up. I bought the pistol to be my carry gun, thinking the slim profile would be a good idea. Also it came with a nice hat. Paragraphs follow the rows of photos.
The CT9 comes in a cardboard box with foam surrounding it, packaged in a zipped plastic bag. Also in the box is a smaller white box with a small padlock, two keys, two plastic blocks to go behind the trigger and a metal rod with a hole for the lock, (This is a very secure trigger lock, taking a good press to fit the plastic halves behind the trigger) and one magazine. Made in America with a tag on the gun to prove it!
Break down is where I start having complaints. While holding the slide back a half inch or so (as noted by two small marks on the slide and frame) you need to use some kind of plastic tool to knock the slide release lever out. I tried very hard to push it by hand with no luck. The pistol breaks down like most polymer framed pistols, Release the slide some how, pull the trigger, and pull forward. After this the CT9 greets you with a non captive recoil spring that is the strongest spring I’ve had to deal with. The spring launched the metal guide rod several feet into the air both times I took the pistol apart, and took both hands pressing down to get it back in place. On a positive note, the feed ramp of the barrel is polished to a mirror shine.
On the rear right side of the pistol where the slide and frame meet there is a polymer plate that I assume is used to access the trigger components. It is held in place with a very tiny torque screw, but sits just a hair higher than the frame. The sight picture leaves some to be desired, The dot and post style sight just isn’t as nice as a three dot. The metal rear sight is replaceable, but the polymer front sight is pinned in place. The spring in the magazine is tough, needing me to bear down on it to load to a full eight rounds and with only one included I tore my thumb up loading it while at the range.
Finally, The range trip! I shot a box of 50 rounds with my last eight shooting for a group at seven yards. I had not considered how thin the pistol is and how it would effect my shooting. I have decently sized hands and my fingers would pass too far through the trigger guard making me pull shots left. The trigger pull is long with a sustained heavy weight to it and no noticeable “wall” before the break , more akin to a revolver than a striker fired pistol. The reset is just as long with a very loud click at the end, which is a good thing because you may not let the trigger fully reset.
Note: A few times the slide did not hold open on the last round. A notice in the box reads “Slide Release Tip: The slide release on this Kahr pistol has been designed to warn the shooter when the magazine is empty. When the slide is held open on an empty magazine, the slide release is very hard to depress. To easily release the slide, either remove the empty magazine or replace it with a loaded magazine. Depressing the slide release will then be much easier.”
All in all, for 250 bucks the CT9 is a decent gun, Well made where it counts and cuts corners where it isn’t much of an issue. I pick on some of the problems, but most can be looked past, The poor trigger being one I can’t get over. For self defense it is a good gun, but shooting past ten yards will need a bit of practice for me. I’d recommend shooting one before you buy it.
