“Did I tell you about Daphne?”

“You enjoying yourself so far?”

Elgin’s parents were with Lucille today, so he had the day completely to himself. And it was his birthday. He had no idea what to do. He was sitting on the couch and reading a book when he heard a knock on his front door. After a moment, he was opening the door. “Did you bring cake?”

Roxie was in the middle of a store when she heard someone else enter. She turned instinctively and froze. Cole. Part of her wanted to run, to hide before he could see her, but she couldn’t move. The sight of him had her rooted to the spot. “Hi,” she said quietly.

Elgin pulled Lucille’s scarf up to cover her face one more time, making sure she was snuggled up and warm. “She doesn’t want me to hold her, so I go to the park and put her down, and the first thing she does is fall face first into the snow. And then she screams.” Elgin gave his daughter a bounce before holding her, face forward. “How’s your festival?”

“Come on. All I want is some time with my little brother.”

“So...how are the dragons?”
