Okay, so weird post. But it kind of breaks my heart when I think about the prime Persona 4 (particularly Souyo) fandom years (2012-2017 or so?) on Tumblr that I only ever really got to experience through browsing the site years after most of it occured.
I entered the fandom right on the tail end of this all, and due to a kind of fear of Tumblr (this was the prime era of being considered "problematic" for the littlest things or that I'd ship the "wrong" pair), I never made an account until the early 2020s. Most of my interactions with the P4 fandom were through AO3, and a little bit of Instagram.
Despite all this though, I was able to get zines, fan comics and art, and even participate in a Secret Santa, and 2010s Souyo fans? Y'all were the loveliest bunch around.
Part of me wishes that I had been a bit older, had discovered the game earlier in its life. Then I could show my gratitude to people who are either deactivated, disappeared, or in different fandoms.
But the other part is appreciative of what actually happened. If I wasn't the age I was, discovering P4 at that time, I think I would be worse off. People probably think I exaggerate when I say the game and its fans saved me, but I do mean it.
So to all the Persona 4 fans and the Souyo fans from both that time I missed out on and the time I was there, thank you. I doubt this will actually be seen by most of y'all, but nonetheless I am grateful and I needed to share that.
And if you're still a fan, or you're a new fan who joined after I did, or discovered P4 recently because of Revival, I'd love to talk. I kinda suck at Tumblr, but it would be nice to make some mutuals and even friends. P4 has been on my mind nonstop since 2017, and I still have so much to say and share. (I gotta get back into the fic scene! Gotta remake my old Yosuke cosplay from high school!)

Scientists Dazai and Chuuya who are academic rivals. Chuuya puts endless hours into his experiments, plans it out in excruciating detail, measures stuff down to the exact mL (or μL depending on the scale), even when it doesn’t matter that much. Dazai however eyeballs it and decides if his cells don’t survive the extra 10 g of salt he adds to their growth media, or the obviously incorrect pH, then fine, they didn't deserve to make it into a published study anyways.
Dazai’s experiments always work out flawlessly and Chuuya’s always fail.

Right now I’m listening to the audio book for Project Hail Mary and I’m on chapter 6 right now and Mars has been mentioned.
I immediately paused the book and messaged my partner “MARS MENTIONED?!?! BLOOD MOON?!?!? SIMON ON THE HAIL MARY?!?!? CONFIRMED?!?!??!” And then sent another message “i am forcibly removed from the building”
They come back with “MARS MENTIONED? THE MARTIAN REFERENCE?!!? I’m taken out back and shot in the head”

i know that we, as a fandom, talk alot about how great it would be if the dsmp got turned into a tv show, or a movie, or something, but honestly?? i don’t think it would realistically live up to our expectations. i mean, don’t get me wrong — if netflix announced that they were making a series based off the smp, i would be as ecstatic as anyone. but think about it. it would be created by, directed by, and acted in by people who most likely hadn’t been there to watch it firsthand. it’s not impossible that they had been, but probably not. and while i have no doubt that the people who would create it would be extremely talented, how true could it actually be?? because even if they watched all the vods and every character analysis on youtube, the dsmp wasn’t just the story, it was the culture around it. it was the farart, the animatics, the fic, the twitter threads. it was the fans, blurring the line between fanon and canon, and sometimes stepping over it completely. it was some canon events being completely ignored, while some fanon things were accepted as fact. it wasn’t just plot, it was the countless streams of just messing around. it was the bloopers. it was the wild donos in the middle of an intense scene. it was twitch crashing. it was asking for subs, or primes, and being part of the character. if you weren’t there, how could you ever truly understand it? the sheer scope? i think that if the dsmp was turned into a series, we would get the plot, yeah. but not the feel. never the feel.
i think that if we truly wanted to have a film adaptation, the best (or only, really) way to get the soul of the smp would to have it be a low-budget production made by the fans, posted on youtube. like so much fan content before. bad wigs, newbie actors, a stilted script — a bunch of people just goofing off, having fun, and interacting with the content they love. that would capture the feel.
