Description: The surgeonās photograph is Nessieās most iconic picture. The story behind the photo goes as follows; Marmaduke Wetherell was a reporter who covered a story about discovered Loch Ness Monster footprints for the Daily Mail (yes, that Daily Mail). When it was discovered that the footprints were a hoax, the paper ridiculed Wetherell for his naivety. Humiliated, Wetherell decided to give the newspaper a taste of their own medicine. So with the help of family and friends, Wetherell constructed a toy submarine to resemble the monster, and snapped two photographs of it out on the loch (where it was sunk to cover up the the hoax). The photos were then given to a local surgeon, who enjoyed the practical joke. The Daily Mail took the bait, and the rest is history. What remains unsure is, after all these years, why didnāt Wetherell pull back the curtain to reveal the hoax, completing his revenge? Instead, he took the secret to the grave, only to have a family member rat him out in the 1990ā²s. Maybe the hoax got too big for his britches and he didnāt want it to bite him on the rear end.Ā
