Okay. He did break his promise to destroy the hexcore, but thatâs not what this is about. Iâve seen so many people being like âViktor wanted to die and Jayce is only prolonging his suffering.â No! Wrong! Jail for you!
Viktor does not want to die. Is he willing to die? Yes, thatâs why he asked Jayce to destroy the hexcore in the first place, but we all apparently collectively forgot that this man was working constantly during Season 1 to figure out how to cure him, went to his old mentor who he hadnât visited since he was a kid (because he thought he was a monster) for help, only stopping his pursuit once his work got someone killed. Viktor does not want to die, but will do so if it meant other people would be safe from what he did.
Jayce is not cruel for using the hexcore to save Viktor. He did not know what it would do to him. All he knew was that it could have saved his life, and it did. Cruel would be if he knew that Viktor wouldnât come back the same, if he knew Whatever It Was he saw when he entered the hexgate before he let the hexcore merge with Viktor and yet did it anyway. Did he fuck up by doing this? Yes, but he didnât understand the outcome. Itâs not a cruelty, even if it was slightly selfish - he thought he was saving him.
He did not prolong Viktorâs life just to kill him in the end. Again, he did not know what the hexcore would do to Viktor. Jayce did not save him with the intention of killing him. And are we really being like âoh he saved his life just to murder him anywayâ when Jayce was clearly (painfully) hallucinating and we still donât know the whole truth of what happened to him??? Viktor even said that it wasnât Jayce anymore.
Heâs not even dead, heâs in the teaser for Act 3.
I was planning to catch up on older D20 campaigns first before going to the newer stuff but the absolute energy that Cloudward Ho is giving off from the small bits Iâve seen is gonna get me to break my pattern. What the fuck is going on there and why havenât I crashed the party yet?
Iâve been playing Lies of P and of course I have questions, and I understand that itâs a whole debate about who P is in relation to Carlo, so I kinda just wanna jot down how I understand the situation.
For clarification in this post: human will refer to living organic beings, puppet will refer to mechanical beings, carcass will refer to undead/non-sentient organic being, person will refer all sentient beings regardless of composition. (I know that the whole thing about the game is puppets count as people but this is just for clarityâs sake). For further clarification, P will be the player characterâs body while Carlo will be used in reference to either his previous life or his soul/Ergo.
TL,DR - P is Carlo, but not the same version of Carlo that Geppetto was expecting due to a combination of trauma, missing memories, and having the time for self-discovery throughout the course of the game. P is not a puppet learning humanity but Carlo discovering what it means to be himself through the vehicle of relearning humanity via his memory loss. Itâs still a journey about being your own person and not letting other people define you, but itâs more contained.
As I understand, Ergo contains memories. Itâs how Romeo remembers Carlo and Geppetto. Itâs also how the puppets âawakenâ/gain sentience because all living things have Ergo. And that seems very straightforward. Every person I see talking about The King of Puppets (even the game itself with his health bar) refers to him as Romeo. Thatâs just a statement. The King of Puppets is Romeo. No one tries to do workarounds with it like âum actually itâs a puppet with Romeoâs memories, itâs not actually Romeo.â
So why do we go out of our way to do this with P? Because he doesnât remember? Because he goes through the game having to learn humanity one step at a time rather than just having that awakening from the get-go?
I donât believe this is correct - P does remember Carlo to some extent. If he didnât remember anything at all, he wouldnât have reacted to the portrait of Carlo and his appearance wouldnât have changed after defeating Romeo. Carloâs Ergo inside him makes him undergo physical changes. So I do think those memories impact him and itâs not like theyâre just playing out inside his head like a movie. He shows he cares about Romeo despite not fully understanding who he is. They are his memories.
I donât think the Rise of P ending implies that P and Carlo arenât the same. I think it implies that Carlo has changed because of what he went through - his death, incomplete resurrection, and being manipulated the entire game - and is becoming a different person (metaphorically, not literally).
Geppetto does not believe that P is an actual human because heâs a puppet and he doesnât have Carloâs memories which is why he wants to take Pâs heart and put it into the Nameless Puppet (Carloâs corpse). NP is not Carlo and not P because by the time you get to the Real Boy ending, P has evolved to be more than a puppet. At this point in time, taking his heart away and giving it to NP is a heart transplant, not a resurrection, which is why NP obeys without question. NP is not Carlo, itâs just a carcass. As to why he obeys Geppetto - so has P in the Real Boy ending. Heâs being a âgood boyâ for his father, and itâs also implied by Geppetto that NP has the Grand Covenant instilled in him as P was ânever bound by the Grand Covenant like the other puppets because of Carloâs memories.â So Nameless Puppet cannot be entirely human as it is a carcass, and if itâs not a carcass, itâs a puppet because of the limitations placed upon it. It is not a person.
I would also like to point out on this front that Carloâs corpse is also called Nameless Puppet and not Carlo, unlike with The King of Puppets where he is directly called Romeo.
This is a very long winded way of saying that NP does not have Carloâs Ergo/memories/soul. It stays with P and dies with P in the Real Boy ending.
In the Rise of P ending, Gepetto, as he is dying, says to P - not to the Nameless Puppet, to P - âIâm sorry, son.â He recognizes P as Carlo. We already established that he doesnât see his creations as his children - he only refers to them as just that, his creations (itâs the Mad Donkey that says heâs their father and that he should take responsibility for the Frenzy). He calls P âsonâ throughout the game, but we know that itâs because heâs a) hoping Carloâs memories will be awoken and b) manipulating P into collecting Ergo. Itâs about the manipulation, he does not actually care about P and he did not care about Carlo despite referring to him as his son (he literally grew up in an orphanage, his father does not care about him). But by the end of the game he has recognized that his son is alive, just not in the way he wanted. He finally admits this, finally apologizes for what he puts P/Carlo through. Heâs still a shit dad and a manipulative bastard, but calling P his son here is genuine to him.
I do not see P as a separate person from Carlo. I see him as a different version of Carlo, the way that The King of Puppets is a different version of Romeo. To use him as an analogy again, Romeoâs Stalker codename is Lampwick. Lampwick is still Romeo, just that itâs Romeo in a specific role, perhaps with a specific method of doing things compared to his usual personality. In that same vein, Pinocchio is still Carlo - heavily traumatized, an amnesiac, and thoroughly changed, but still Carlo regardless.
The Nameless Puppet is also very heavy handed in making this known. Geppetto doesnât want Carlo as his own person (as P). He wants the version of Carlo that listened to him, the one from before, the one that died. Carlo might have hated his father, but he was obedient to him. Geppetto wants that son and nothing else, so he goes as far as to mutilate his sonâs corpse in an attempt to achieve that. He canât accept that Carlo is now something else, someone else, and is out of his reach.
