I gotta live here..
It all started the day after Christmas in 2013. My half brother flew me out to visit him in Burbank, CA for 2 whole weeks. There’s a lot I could say about my vacation, but I think I can sum my experience up with the title of this post; “I gotta live here..”
When my brother picked me up from LAX the night of December 26th, 2013, I just remember being in his backseat staring out the window. It was dark, so I couldn’t really make out any detailed scenery.. but I do remember pointing at this silhouette of a mountain while asking, “Wtf is that?” “A mountain, Saila. A mountain.”
Don’t judge me. I’m from Mobile, Alabama, where there are nothing but swamps and flatlands.. with a few trees here and there I guess. Possibly cotton. Just a bunch of nothing, basically.
So when I saw my first mountain, I was in awe. We were staying at his friend place in Burbank. My bedroom had a cute little balcony attached. It was so picture perfect!
That same night, we decided to drive around Beverly Hills aimlessly. These houses had some of the most spectacular Christmas decor I’ve ever seen! He also introduced me to West Hollywood, where gay people feel free to express their sexuality free of judgment. The crosswalks were painted rainbow! #prideful.
I woke up the next morning and decided to enjoy my balcony. The air was so perfect. I can’t even explain it. California weather is just therapeutic. Once you experience a sunny day in SoCal, you won’t want to leave. Which is one reason of several why i decided I was going to move my life across the country. I had 1 year to plan. I had 1 year left of college, so it was timed perfectly. The second I got back to Mobile, the planning began.
