The Machiavellian
Chapter Three: What Could Have Been
December 1992, Mystic Falls
Snow laid along the ground, providing a fresh innocence that was forgien to most of the world. The small cookie cutter homes were all lined in a row, an American dream shown in picture perfect unison. The idyllic scenery created a false sense of security, an idea that nothing bad could have ever happened in such a small town, especially in a few days away from Christmas.
A fire was lit in a small crate in a home that was only one story tall, smoke rising from the chimney. It was a quaint home with a porch and yellow shutters. The drive had yet to be shoveled, snow and ice covering the black pavement. There were cracks in the paint, chipping away and in need of a fresh coat, a chore Bill had been putting off, much to his wife’s annoyance. Despite his avoidance of the household duties, she smiled and pressed a kiss to the top of his head.
He hummed at the feeling of her lips, turning to see her bright blue eyes and light blonde hair pulled back in a braid. Bill stood, putting the iron fire-poker down to lean against the stone fireplace and reached for her. He pulled her into a kiss, feeling her smirk against his lips. The room was dark, for the sun had set hours ago and the only brightness that could be seen in the dark living room were the lights wrapped around the Christmas tree, wrapped gifts laying on the ground, waiting to be opened.
“Liz, how can you expect me to finish wrapping these gifts if you keep distracting me?” Bill asked, chuckling at his wife. Her eyes flickering to the ground but not a hint of remorse in her expression. “Do you not think you went a little overboard? She isn’t even going to be able to open any of them.”
