a summary of my first day on wellbutrin
Billions of prescriptions for generic drugs are filled in the U.S. annually. The FDA tests only a few dozen of them every year, its own reco
It’s a fundamental tenet of health care in America: Generic drugs are just as safe and effective as brand-name ones. The only difference is the price... [But the FDA] doesn’t routinely test generics for quality concerns or to see if they’re working as effectively as brand-name medications. Instead, the agency heavily relies on drug companies, often in countries as far away as India and China, to do their own testing and to report any problems... ProPublica decided to test several generic versions of three of the most widely prescribed drugs in the United States: the antidepressant bupropion XL, the generic for Wellbutrin XL; the heart medicine metoprolol succinate, the generic for Toprol XL; and the cholesterol drug atorvastatin, the generic for Lipitor. A total of 11 samples from readers, ProPublica employees and the independent testing lab Valisure were assessed, representing a cross section of manufacturers from around the world... While most of the samples passed, the findings showed that one version of bupropion and one version of metoprolol, dispensed at least tens of thousands of times in 2024 alone, had irregularities that experts say could compromise their effectiveness.
The medical industry and the FDA have been lying to us for YEARS. Generic drugs are NOT tested as well as brand-name. They do NOT always work the same. Sometimes the problem COULD BE your medication. For YEARS doctors have assumed patients were lying if they said a certain manufacturer or the generic version doesn't work as well. It turns out, the FDA has been extremely permissive in testing generic medicine; the only kind of medicine Medicaid will cover. Pharmacists in some states can switch out your medicine for generic meds or meds made by a different company because they're "equivalent." Turns out, maybe not so fucking much!
Hey so if you've been on an SSRI (or a couple different ones) for more than a year and you've recently developed chronic pain or worsening chronic pain (that doesn't seem like there's a real reason for it) PLEASE talk to your doctor about the rare side effects of the ssris you're on or have been on, because "muscles aches and pains" is a rare side effect and the likelihood of you experiencing a rare side effect goes up the more time you're on the SSRI.
And yeah it sounds silly "oh my muscles are sore" no I'm talking muscle spasms and tightness. I was on ssris for the past 5 years (3 years of wellbutrin at the end) and had to start taking muscle relaxers because my back and hips were so painfully tight the muscles were literally injuring my ligaments and shit, but I stopped Wellbutrin and suddenly I barely need my muscle relaxers.
I'm fucking serious, I just thought there was something else going on hearing about all of these depressed and mentally ill people having chronic pain, turns out ssris can give you chronic pain.
Please talk to your doctor and read the warnings on your ssris carefully or at least keep this in mind if you choose not to. My chronic pain induced by ssris made my mental illnesses worse because I couldn't fucking exist without pain.
