having way too much fun after making an AU wheel and a ship wheel
I love comparing Lucien and Cree to Orpheus and Eurydice because at first blush it’s like “wtf no” but that’s the kneejerk reaction to the popularized interpretation of the myth.
Greek myths are so often about the gods punishing the hubris of mortals so when you look at it through that lens, you have to consider that there’s a version of the story where Orpheus looked back on purpose not out of desperation or love or even because he doesn’t trust her but because he thought “I got away with everything so far. I bet I get away with this too. Watch me.” And Eurydice’s life was worth the slightest chance that he might be right.
“I love you. I’d walk through hell to get you back because I need you, but I’m not going to choose you when it counts.”

Lucien blinked down at her, lashes just long enough to be pretty, and Cree let herself get sucked back in again. He truly was someone to marvel at, just from looks alone. It was no wonder his playful seductions garnered them information they wouldn’t have gotten otherwise. Even if his eyes unnerved others on occasion, she could swear she saw the stars reflected in the pools of blood. Lucien was beautiful as a bloodied blade, a weapon waiting to be used again. She wondered what he saw in her eyes when it was dark. Did he think her eyes were beautiful too? Distracting in the dark like his were, glowing and holding her in place? Did he think she was beautiful?
Cree and her abysmal taste in men, but before the taste was truly questionable.
