Hello new friendo? How do you suggest i start journalling? Iām lost
I was actually convinced to do a whole yt vid on this subject! But I take forever so! in the meantime...
1. figure out what kind of journaling you aim to do first, before buying any supplies. Thereās 2 kinds that Iāve found: people who want to do aĀ āillustrated diaryā type of journaling where they write about their day or follow prompts but add artistic elements like watercolor drawings, washi tape, stickers etc. and the second type is a moreĀ āelevated sketchbookā type. Like a sketchbook that you aim to make into a final artwork.Ā
If itās the first one, look into buying a nice journal that can handle ink and watercolor. My favorite is the Rhodia brand because it can handle fountain pens and doesn't bleed through the pages.Ā
If itās the second, get yourself a really nice watercolor sketchbook. My favorite brand is Stillman and Birn. All of their sketchbooks are great but the zeta series is 100% my favorite.Ā
2. the rest is easy. experiment with what kind of artistic medium you prefer! Watercolor, acrylic, gouache, pen and ink, pencil.... try them all if you can. I have aĀ āmy favorite art suppliesā yt video, if you want to see my personal favs:
3. collect some inspiration. I have a onenote folder that I use to collect anything that catches my eye: poetry, quotes, images, lists of prompts etc. I collect them from instagram, tumblr, flickr, unsplash etc. and itās important for me to have it all in one place because otherwise I get scattered and forget what was where. Like, instagram has aĀ ācollectionsā thingy and tumblr has likes but when I sit down to actually journal, I dont want to dig through a million places to find stuff.Ā
4. just have fun and experiment and dont be afraid to make ugly art!!! I do all the time and it feels great. make sure that youāre doing this for you first.Ā
5. if you decide to post your finished work on social media, remember that it takes SO MUCH TIME to find an audience and that interacting with other artists and commenting/engaging with others is the best way to gain a community and a following.Ā
Thatās all iāve got for now. if thereās anything specific, hmu
