The World Commission on Culture and Development established by the United Nations and entrusted to UNESCO to lead presents its Final Report entitled “Our Creative Diversity”, stating that development divorced from its human and cultural context is 'growth without a soul'. The Report further emphasizes that development embraces not only access to goods and services, but also the opportunity to choose a full, satisfying, valuable and valued way of living together rooted in the enriching flourishing of cultures. The Report called for an international agenda to transform conventional development strategies.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaims the year 2021 as the International Year of the Creative Economy for Sustainable Development, thus reaffirming the potential of cultural and creative industries to contribute to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda. UNESCO’s advocacy efforts for the recognition of the nexus between culture and sustainable development also leads to the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of a new Resolution on Culture and Sustainable Development (Ref. A/C.2/70/L.6), following up 7 successive resolutions adopted since 2010 (Ref. Resolutions 65/166, 66/208, 68/223, 69/230 and 70/214, 72/229, 74/230). It calls for enhanced support and additional financial resources and investments for the cultural and creative sectors, particularly in the context of pandemic recovery efforts.
