A throwback to two weekends ago, when we celebrated not one, but two milestones for the craft beer scene in Malaysia. The first one was the return of the Hops And Malts festival at Taps Beer Bar (@tapsbeerbar). After the unfortunate cancellation of the Better Beer Fest in 2017, in 2018, Taps repackaged the festival into this smaller, more contained version that takes place solely within the confines of Taps. It was not as big as the BBF, but it was another little step forward after a major step back. Since then, we’ve seen the craft beer scene grow with more and more players, and many of them, from Farmers Bar (@farmersbar.com.my), House Of Hops (@houseofhopsmy), The Drinks Buddy (@thedrinksbuddymy), Modern Madness (@modernmadnessx), and Bruxale Belgian Beers (@bruxalebeerskl) were at this year’s Hops And Malts hawking their wares as well. Taps also debut two new Taps Beer Bar Original Beers - the Thani Session IPA, and the Beer ‘O Ais Limau - both very easy drinking and refreshing beers. All beers on tap were going for RM20 each, which was another great reason to go. —————- The next day, another KL craft beer institution, Ales n Lagers (@alesnlagers), celebrated its TENTH anniversary. I’ve known Kennhyn since even before he opened AnL, so I decided to bring along a special beer to celebrate with him - a 2012 Pannepot Old Fisherman’s Ale, a strong, 12.5% ABV Belgian dark alr that had been sitting in my fridge since 2012. In fact, I think I even bought this particular bottle from AnL years ago lol. Both events were pretty well-received and packed with both familiar faces and new ones. 10 years after AnL opened and 11 years after Taps, it’s really great to see a growing fanbase of craft beers here in KL. There’s a new place for craft beer at The Gardens, Mid Valley! Takumi CraftBar has opened its second KL outlet on the 3rd Floor of Isetan, and it’s a much bigger space than the one in Lot 10. There are currently 4 taps available, and a decent selection of bottles and cans. There’s also a Tasting Set of 3 for those who want to taste more of what’s on tap, and also a menu of Japanese sake, spirits and highballs. There’s food too, but mainly bar bites and pizzas. It may not have a record-breaking number of beers or anything like that, but really, I’m just happy that there’s actually a place for craft beers in Mid Valley.
