Worldbuilding June Day 4: What’s its history? (How did it come to be?)
Today's prompt deals with, well, how my fantasy world got to its current state. Now, I kinda had to choose between going into the fine details of the history of each kingdom and empire, or I could give you the broad strokes for the planet and for each species. And given how much time I spent on the last three prompts, I'll just be be giving you the broad strokes.
So, let's just start off with the planet itself. It formed 4 billion years ago, in the same way that rocky planets in our universe, including Earth, get formed. I suggest reading a geology textbook if you wanna get the specifics, because there's a lot of them.
The planet cooled down relatively fast, and 3 billion years ago, there were already fully formed bacteria floating around in the oceans. About 450 million years ago, these had evolved into the first multicellular organisms of my world. Since the basic biology of life in my world is the same as in ours, most microbiology textbooks explain how all of these processes go pretty well.
About 370 million years ago, the first life forms crawled out of the oceans of my world and onto land. The continents looked nothing like they do right now. In fact, there weren't any landmasses large enough to be called continents! As the various larger islands slowly started clumping together, they started forming the continents visible today. In the meantime, life on land started diversifying.
Fast forward 360 million years, to 10 million years before the current timeline, and magical rocks start to surface in various regions. While this happened in so many different places is still unknown. Let's call it a writer-induced stroke of luck. These rocks had strange effects on the creatures living where they surfaced. Some became fully magical themselves, but for most they just caused the animals and plants to evolve rapidly in directions they otherwise wouldn't have. One result of this was the various intelligent species inhabiting my world emerging.
But long before the planet's life got imbued with all that magic, about 150 years ago, an intelligent species was already living beneath the waves. They evolved from crabs living near hydrothermal vents in what, after some continental drift, would become the Southern Ocean. There, they built large cities and kept other undersea life forms, such as tubeworms, sharks, and various types of shrimp, as livestock. But these Crabfolk died out completely, and today only ruins of their cities remain.
The first species to gain sentience because of the magical rocks was a type of crocodile, already 8 million years ago. These people are what is today known as the Draconians. The Draconians were slow to build up technology to the point at which we consider something a “civilization”, which only happened 2 million years ago. From there, some states formed, and they had territorial disputes. By 20,000 years ago, all of the Draconian kingdoms on the mainland had been unified into the Dragon Empire.
About 5 million years ago, sharks and squid in separate seas gained conscience, giving rise to Merfolk and Octopi respectively. Because the seas are more connected than the land, these two species met each other fairly quickly, and they fought over land water. The Merfolk were stronger and smarter than the Octopi when in prime condition, but they were more affected by their exothermic nature. Because of this, Merfolk have a firm hold on all of the warm, tropical seas of the world, while the Octopi live in the colder seas away from the equator. Neither species dares to venture out into the deep ocean though, out of fear what is in there...
A species of desert-dwelling cat gained sentience about 4.5 million years ago, and became the Elves. After about 3 million years of happily hunting birds and small critters, improving their hunting techniques as they needed, the Elves finally made some more advanced technology about 1.5 million years ago. This again had them content and only slowly improving for a long while, until 50,000 years ago, they started forming small states. 2,000 years ago, these states figured it was in their own best interest to at least have a single leader representing them to the outside world, and formed the Elven Imperial Federation.
Humans were latecomers to the scene, only gaining sentience 4 million years ago. Their curious nature, however, helped them to quickly reach a high level of technology. The first entities that can be called “civilizations” in the Humans' homeland, the Southern Continent, already existed about 2 million years ago. And about 1 million years ago, ships from these civilizations landed in the south and the east of the Northern Continent. Their lust for power and violence unfortunately took over once they were there. A long history of war, some of which was with the Elven states, finally resulted in the three Eastern and two Southern Kingdoms that my world has currently.
